Hey all. I made an updated version of this video over here: ruclips.net/video/JvyUkSenWK0/видео.html It takes into account most of the great questions you've left over the years (and that I just didn't think of at the time). Let me know what you think.
Hello, is this what you used to coat it (link below)? Also, would you happen to know what the difference is using a simply finish and using the Vermont Coatings you used? Thanks. www.amazon.com/Vermont-Natural-Coatings-Furniture-Finish/dp/B002MMMR14/ref=pd_ybh_a_10?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=ZNY7S0K91J4PR67Z4EVR
Note that the Vermont Coatings that I linked to on Amazon says "Made Green" on the bottom of the can. I'm not sure why, but is that the same stuff you used?
Very nice. I tried the steel wool method but wasn't very happy with it. Your video has inspired me to try again. So cool that you include your son in the work. My dad did that with me and I still remember it at 70 years old. Thanks for posting!
finally someone who explained the wood aging process in lamens terms. GREAT video and Great Job. and tell your son he did a great job. consider me a subscriber.
Excellent vid, and I really like the written method in the link. I am really impressed with the finished colour. Here in the UK, Pine is the most commonly available timber. It’s hard to make look good, but your presentation has changed that for me. Many thanks.🇬🇧
So here's what happened when I tried this today. When I put the tea on first and THEN the vinegar/steel wool mixture, it turned a dark gray. When I put the vinegar mixture on and THEN the tea, it turned a rustic, barnwood brownish gray color. I tried it on a piece of Ikea unfinished pine (a shelf that was delivered damaged, which made for great stain testing!). My vinegar mixture was made two days ago, so tomorrow I'm going to test it out again and see what happens.
I'm loving the color!! I only left mine for two days, then sanded it. Wish I could show you, it's beautiful!! Didn't do the tea, thought it was much too gray for what I wanted. It's perfect!!
Nice work. Straight up and simple. One thing I learned from experience is that if you leave that SOS pad in the vinegar for > a week it turns to rust and you get a messy rust coating on your boards that doesn't look like anything and doesn't really clean up. In other words, throw that stuff out after a week if you have leftover. Cheers
Are you Serious? This is the BEST Stain tutorial. Been looking for an alternative process. Will check out your other tutorials. Pretty sure I will subscribe. Thank you, thank you, thank you. P.S. and thank you for just “getting to the point”.
Great video! Wow! What a finish! As was said earlier, less talk more show. The thing that I REALLY LIKE is the written description & instructions you've added. Kudos!
So glad I came across your tutorial. I was about to spend more money than needed at the hardware store on stains. You explained the procedure thoroughly and I can't wait to do my dining room table top with this finish. Great job to you and your son.
Thank you~Am building a pallet coffee table for my niece. This is EXACTLY what she likes in colour. Got the industrial casters and we will knock this out of the soccer park!
Thanks for the tutorial. Very concise, no extra talking and you have the link right there for more info. I have 1/2 a room of shiplap to do this weekend and this is really going to help.
I just bought a cheap entertainment center I'm going to use as a kitchenette counter in the man cave I'm building that has a color similar to this. Plan to install pine Waynes coating. Now I have a plan for the wood treatment.
Wow, I am so impressed! All of this is readily available in the house!!!!! I wanted to ask, if I wanted to use a metallic gilding wax over this, would it work? Also how would I protect it then? Thanks in advance!
Please don't completely seal the jar. The production of iron acetate creates hydrogen gas, which when contained can be unsafe. I use a coffee filter and the lid ring to keep junk out of my acetate stain, but still allow gasses to escape. A latex/nitrile glove works too, as it allows for expansion of the gasses, instead of keeping them compressed in the jar.
Hello, and thanks for your video. Would you recommend this method of staining wood for carved spoons? I've started spoon carving a few months ago, and I've seen that some people stain their spoons with this method, but I feel funny about the steel wool, in the surface of the spoon. Thanks for your comments!
Good stuff, man. I was introduced to using tea a long time ago, but I hadn't used it in conjunction with anything. Gonna have to try this in the shop this week! Oh, and thank you for giving us actual _information,_ rather than the ubiquitous click-bait "see my website for the rest" crap. Liked & Subbed.
suscribed =), i know this video has been posted awhile back but after sanding it for the last step, would this still be ok to use as a dining table? meaning will it be waterproof enough so that if i spill something on the wood will it warp the wood?
HI! I tried this application on a pine sample and love it for a farmhouse table my husband built! My question is... I like your second sample ( without poly ) because it is more gray than brown- I saw you mentioned poly will change the color! Have you tried a poly that has not changed the color? I want more gray than brown, thoughts?
How do you deal with any wood filler that might have had to be put not o cover gaps, nail holes and such? When applied as directed the stainable wood filler did not change at all. Is there a solution to this problem? Thought about using grey stain to cover the filler but it is highly visible after dried.
Nice upload thanks! Thinking of doing this to boards used on a porch ceiling, semi-exposed in a wintery climate. How would this finish survive out there? Also, I think the common species used for that (t&g, beadboard etc.) is pine, but how would this procedure do on pine?
If the the ceiling is going to be exposed the elements, it will probably need retouching every few years, so just be prepared for that. As for pine, what you see in the this video is exactly what to expect - I used pine as well :)
I thought nothing would happen with acetate (steel oxyde) on pine because of lack of tannin to react with. I forgot tea spread before has probably tannins in, well done ! 😉
At the time mark 1:53 I see images on the wood as you are applying the poly. Do you have a tutorial on how to do that, and/or what is that called? (I tried searching for "watermarking wood" but it came up with only repairs) Thanks!
+Drummers Eve I recently used coffee instead of tea and that seemed to give me a more dark brown look. I was using pine. Give it a shot on some scrap wood and see what happens.
Gadgets and Grain Ok thanks. Also, have u tried beets or cacao? For some reason i think it might be posdible to get some nice colors out of them. I could be wrong though. lol. Ill experiment.
Great video, thanks. Would this work ok on a pine stair case that I've just put into an small French cottage. It obviously looks too new and were undecided about colours untilbwe saw you class video. Were thinking of doing the underside too. Thanks again
As long at the wood is unfinished, it would work. Try testing it first on a large piece of the pine you are using for stair case before doing the whole thing.
PS I am starting the first step of tea application tonight, so hope to hear soon! Thank you!! Great video, I must have tried tons of stains to get look and nothing until I yours.
I wish I could like the video twice! Great job. I will be using this color on my kids beds. Will adding more vinegar to the steel wool once it’s done get the same stain consistency as the first batch?
I planning to buy a painted black wood mirror and sand of some of the paint off, then add this technique on the exposed wood, do you think it will work? The mirror is quite expensive and I don't feel like fu**in it up.
It's a risky proposition! :) I wouldn't recommend possibly messing up a perfectly good mirror - that's just me. You just don't know what kind of wood is underneath the paint/finish. Perhaps consider buying a cheap mirror at a garage sale to you test this technique. Good luck!
if you had waited until the steel wool completely dissolved , would it have made the end product darker , i like how it has the greyish look , did that happen because of the tannings in the tea bags ? i have some 0000 steel wool im gonna try it thanks
Yes, Earl Grey will work. Essentially, any variation of black tea will work. The more concentrated the brew is, the better it will do the job. The key component of this part of the chemistry is the amount of "Tannin", (Tannic Acid), present. The more tannin, the darker the staining will be.
I think putting it outside in direct sunlight makes it turn gray. The UV activates the tannins in the wood for a gray color. Excellent video. Like it. Try the sunlight thing and pm me if you liked it or not. Thanks
so i followed your tutorial. I sanded down an ikea countertop island and the stain made it very dark. looks cool but definitely not the grey weathered I wanted. wonder what kind of wood it was to cause it. i should post a pic when im done distressing the 2 chairs and frame of the island
Thank you for the great video. ...❤️ your little helper!!! I tried the vinegar solution (no tea) and my chairs are dark... please let me know how to make them a lighter colour ( grey with golden wood tones) It takes for ever to sand them and still a very light grey colour remains. Any easy technique besides sanding? Thank you...😊
This was a great video! You stated you can save the solution. Will that affect how it performs, the longer you wait to use it? Also, do you know how long the left over solution is good for?
Just the one question..what strength vinegar are you using really struggling to find and distilled white vinegar in the UK over 5%... Love this aged finish...
I made a 24 x 30 frame for a puzzle I put together and used pine 1 x 4 and this recipe for stain except I didn't read it close enough and used a different number steel wool and not the recommended #0000 and I was impressed with the results. Maybe cause I did it lol
+Wayne Nelson Thanks for sharing, Wayne. Would love to see how it turned out. Feel free to post a photo on my Facebook page or Twitter feed. Or send me an email: jeremy [at] gadgetsandgrain.com
Loved how you went straight to the point. Was that a Cal Poly sweatshirt? I’m here in the central coast myself 😊 For my next project I will definitely try this.
I recently replaced coffee with tea and it gave me a much more brown hue than what is shown in this video, so you can try that. If you even need to lighten the color, you can always achieve that through sanding. Hope that helps.
Hello I tried do it but I bought distilled white vinegar and it turns brown , where can i find acid vinegar Wal Mart ? publix ? lowes ? Thanks for the video amazing
Hi Aaron. There's not set time you need before applying the steel wool solution. you just want to make sure that the wood is dry from apply the tea. For me, I let the wood dry overnight before applying the steel wool solution. Hope that helps.
Gadgets and Grain thanks! i went ahead and did it the night before. i stained a Rustic X end table from Ana White's plans. Turned out SO great. Thanks for this video!
The vinegar steel wool oxidation mixture is also known as "iron acetate", you can also purchase pre-made mixtures that are typically called "fuming liquids". You're welcome ;)
LOVE this technique..It was just what I have been looking for, for a very long time...Question: Can actual stain replace the tea stain or would it end up too dark..
It depends on how dark the stain is, and I'm not sure how the chemicals in the stain would react to the steel wool solution. The tea just helps to give the wood some natural tannins. Good luck!
This looks really nice, great video. Exactly what I was looking for. Do you mind me asking, but does this smell of vinegar or anything when finished? Only asking as I want to build some cabinets for my camper van and crest this effect, but would want it to smell as it would be such a small area to live in. Thanks in advance.
Hey Billy. No worries! The vinegar smell does go away at the solution dries. It helps the lightly sand the wood after it’s been oxidized to kick off the excess solution. Plus, one you seal the wood with a finish, you won’t be able to smell any trace of vinegar.
Awesome video, very well done! Thanks for sharing your ideas and doing it in a no nonsense, straightforward way. Gotta say I love the song too, may I ask where you found it? Keep up the good work!
Hey all. I made an updated version of this video over here: ruclips.net/video/JvyUkSenWK0/видео.html

i realize I'm kinda off topic but do anyone know of a good website to watch newly released series online ?
@Remington Landyn flixportal
@Jalen Orion thanks, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D I appreciate it!!
Your son will always remember being in the workshop and spending time with you. That's priceless!
He's my little helper :)
That's as touching or more so, than the video technique
So true, I spent many hours with my dad in the workshop, and to this day I'm still close and love doing things with him.
AGREED!!!! That is how I learned how to do woodworking was with my dad. Even with his dementia, he still wants to do projects with me
Very nice. I tried the steel wool method but wasn't very happy with it. Your video has inspired me to try again. So cool that you include your son in the work. My dad did that with me and I still remember it at 70 years old. Thanks for posting!
Sounds sweet 😊
My kind of tutorial. Less talk, straight to the point demonstration.
My kind of video as well!
YUP!!!Very clear. Better than a lot of talk. I like the fat little boy, he is so cute.
Halcyon
I was just thinking the same!
finally someone who explained the wood aging process in lamens terms. GREAT video and Great Job. and tell your son he did a great job. consider me a subscriber.
+patrick mcglone Much appreciated! Thanks Patrick!
I truly agree with you 😉
Layman's
I used your method to age the new wood used ti repair the playhouse I made 30 years ago. It worked perfectly.
Thanks
Best tutorial using this technique so far. Can't wait to try it out. Your young assistant is adorable.
This is the BEST tutorial I've ever seen! He doesn't waist a second! Thanks man!

LOVE that your little son is right there beside you. Way to be a great Dad! Oh, and thanks for the great distressing tips :)

Your little guy reminds me of the days in the shop when I was a young boy. Epic job on making a video and memorys that will last a life time!
This is just the color combination I was looking for. Looks so much better than others posted online. Thanks a lot.
Finally found someone who is giving nice finnish to wood, and not just simply smashing it ramdomly, and trying painting like it was a bob ross artwork
Great video! Your video has the clearest instructions I have seen on RUclips yet!
+RebeccaAndFamily Thanks!

Finally a video that shows how exactly to get that grey wood look - many thanks sir
Great - no unnecessary dialogue, just show me! Thanks, can't wait to try on an old chest of drawers top!
Perfect! I just bought new 2x6 tongue and groove pine for a desk top. I wasn't too happy with getting new pine, but now I can't wait to use it!
I love this video! Like everyone mentioned, I like it is straightforward and to the point. Thank you for sharing!!!
Just the result I was looking for. Good video, simple process. Well done. Will be truying it out on a dog gate for my my son's house. Thank you!!
many thanks for the tips !! no more cash waste for me to buy wood stain at hardware store. thank you soo much. may the force be with u :)
Thanks for the tutorial. Very concise, no extra talking and you have the link right there for more info. I have 1/2 a room of shiplap to do this weekend and this is really going to help.
Excellent. Enjoyable and informative. Solid production value. Thanks.
+180 Second Ideas Thank you!
I just bought a cheap entertainment center I'm going to use as a kitchenette counter in the man cave I'm building that has a color similar to this. Plan to install pine Waynes coating. Now I have a plan for the wood treatment.
Do you think I might have to prepare the double proportion for aging a table desk? Thanxxx in advance!!!
Hi.. This looks gr8..
How long would the woods oxidation last if we use this on external elevation of my house..
Great tutorial. Like how it is just presented very simply. 👍
Cool simple and easy to do at home👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😁👍🏻
It looks awesome but I'll like to know if I use coarse grade will increase the color or any advice that you can help me with
going to try technique, like the way you explained each step, thank you!
Well done, you are a creative I wish you success 👍👍👍very good
Great video! :) Kid is cute and the music is awesome too!! :) Good luck!
Awesome, concise video, thanks! What steps should I include to get a more dark brown finish? As opposed to the slate dark grey look in the video.
Enjoyed this video. Will definitely be trying this. I'm trying to give new wood a sun bleached look. Do you have a video on how to do that?
(Insert slow clap) My man!!!! That’s exactly the look I was trying to create!!!! Thanks!!!!!!!
Great result - with such a simple technique! Thank you for sharing.
Nice video. Thank you for sharing your technique. Great results.
Thanks for watching!
Wow, I am so impressed! All of this is readily available in the house!!!!! I wanted to ask, if I wanted to use a metallic gilding wax over this, would it work? Also how would I protect it then? Thanks in advance!
Awesome! I'll definitely be trying this soon.
Great lesson, quick and easy, thanks!
Well done! For outdoor wich product would you recomend afetrr the vinegar? Thanks!
Great video! Does the technique work on pine wood?
Please don't completely seal the jar. The production of iron acetate creates hydrogen gas, which when contained can be unsafe. Great tip!
Joseph Blazei hello i want teek finsh teek color on Afghanistani cedarwood (diyar wood) help pleas
Love the look of the treated wood, good job.
How does this technique work on Maple? I love this look and are hoping to do it on my kitchen cabinets.
I don't know - I haven't tried it on maple yet. Try it out on a test piece of maple and see what you get. Testing first is always a good idea.
Hello, and thanks for your video.
Would you recommend this method of staining wood for carved spoons?
I've started spoon carving a few months ago, and I've seen that some people stain their spoons with this method, but I feel funny about the steel wool, in the surface of the spoon.

Thanks! I do what I can.
suscribed =), i know this video has been posted awhile back but after sanding it for the last step, would this still be ok to use as a dining table? meaning will it be waterproof enough so that if i spill something on the wood will it warp the wood?
that looks amazing! defo trying this but i wanted a white look rather than black do yoh know how to get a white effect?
Will brown malt vinegar work as well? Epic job 👌
Hi, looks great. Will you please tell me if I can put an oil poly or a water based polycrylic on top? Thank You.
+Jack Tate You can use both. The one I used in this video is actually made of dairy by-products.
HI! I tried this application on a pine sample and love it for a farmhouse table my husband built! My question is... I like your second sample ( without poly ) because it is more gray than brown- I saw you mentioned poly will change the color! Have you tried a poly that has not changed the color? I want more gray than brown, thoughts?
Thanks ! U make it look easy something I’m definitely going to try
Good luck!
How do you deal with any wood filler that might have had to be put not o cover gaps, nail holes and such? When applied as directed the stainable wood filler did not change at all. Is there a solution to this problem? Thought about using grey stain to cover the filler but it is highly visible after dried.
50 people need a hug.
Nice upload thanks! Thinking of doing this to boards used on a porch ceiling, semi-exposed in a wintery climate. How would this finish survive out there? Also, I think the common species used for that (t&g, beadboard etc.) is pine, but how would this procedure do on pine?

Great job. What would you suggest to obtain a dark brown finish? Like a walnut for instance.

Love the tutorial and Can't wait to try it! What sealer would you recommend that would not change the color result?
I don’t have a good answer for that yet, Amy. I’m hoping to re-do this video soon and experiment with different finishes.
That is just what I have been looking for. OMG!!
Awesome video .. beautiful results... big like
Thanks for watching!
hey, love your video, i`ve tried this but had problems with the vinegar odor, how do you solve that? greetings from Argentina
I purchased a water based poly ( read that will not yellow) would that work over your tea/sw mixture?
I am going to use this method on my kitchen.Do you recommend it? Do you think the colour will last?
Will any flavor tea work? I’m an Earl Grey chap...
Serious question...
Yes, Earl Grey will work. Essentially, any variation of black tea will work. The more concentrated the brew is, the better it will do the job. The key component of this part of the chemistry is the amount of "Tannin", (Tannic Acid), present. The more tannin, the darker the staining will be.

Not much tannins in pine that’s why the tea bags i guess
Great video, thanks. Why would 73 people dislike it?? Some mothers have them!
so i followed your tutorial. I sanded down an ikea countertop island and the stain made it very dark. looks cool but definitely not the grey weathered I wanted. wonder what kind of wood it was to cause it. i should post a pic when im done distressing the 2 chairs and frame of the island
Hey. Send me a photo when you get a chance. jeremy@gadgetsandgrain.com
Thank you for the great video. ...❤️ your little helper!!!
I tried the vinegar solution (no tea) and my chairs are dark...
please let me know how to make them a lighter colour ( grey with golden wood tones)
It takes for ever to sand them and still a very light grey colour remains.

This was a great video! You stated you can save the solution. Will that affect how it performs, the longer you wait to use it? Also, do you know how long the left over solution is good for?
Nice job! Really good looking finish!
Will it look the same over pine? Thanks.
I actually used pine in this video.
Gadgets and Grain it turned more red than grey over here. 😟
Oooomg this is brilliant. I am gonna try thissss
Just the one question..what strength vinegar are you using really struggling to find and distilled white vinegar in the UK over 5%... Love this aged finish...
It’s the same over here in the US - 5%
Awesome video, My only question is , since you used a vinegar base what kind of poly would you use to protect an entire floor?
I made a 24 x 30 frame for a puzzle I put together and used pine 1 x 4 and this recipe for stain except I didn't read it close enough and used a different number steel wool and not the recommended #0000 and I was impressed with the results. Maybe cause I did it lol

Hello I tried do it but I bought distilled white vinegar and it turns brown , where can i find acid vinegar Wal Mart ? publix ? lowes ? Thanks for the video amazing
What turns brown? The solution? Or the wood?
A wire wheel and a slow pace will give you great results too. Almost like it was reclaimed driftwood
Awesome work great video !..... just one question how long do u wait in between the tea application and the steel wool with vinegar application ?
It can depend - a few hours - as long as the wood is dry after the tea application.
Love this video! So quick question...how far in advance of the 4-5 days for oxidizing the wool should you do the tannis?

Good luck!

I love this. What kind of wood are you using here?

Awesome video, very well done! Thanks for sharing your ideas and doing it in a no nonsense, straightforward way. Gotta say I love the song too, may I ask where you found it? Keep up the good work!
