  • Dawn. Started in 1990 as death metal band, this Swedish band turned into black metal with their second album "Slaughtersun". It's a hidden gem and a classic album Jerry wants to talk about.

This album is a pinnacle of success for the Swedish melodic black metal scene along Lord Belial/Enter the moonlight gate and Sacramentum/Far away from the sun. In this album of Dawn tthe drummer is incredibly helpful to bring the waves of atmospheric Swedish storming sounds, Jocke Pettersson also drummer for Thy primordial that is another mighty black Swedish jewel. Awesome review, I have my Lp reedited in a pretty classy presentation, so close to my memories this album and epic in many ways.

Enter The Moonlight Gate is very underrated

Easily my favorite black metal album and criminally underrated band.

It is a master band and a master album! I wish there had been more Dawn, and more Dissection too. I didn't find Dawn until this year actually. But good albums and good bands don't grow on trees

DAWN actually showed some life in existence by printing some shirts, and re-release the albums on vinyl. Afterwards it became quiet again.

Masterpiece, underrated; if they would re-incarnate, it would be one of the few bands I still want to see live.

I think this isn't underrated and does have classic status. It's the previous Dawn material that never gets enough props.

I don't think the older Dawn is nearly as good as this.

The saddest part of this band, is according to the book that comes with the cassette box set from cosmic key, is that all of the recording has been done since 2014-2015, no explanation why it's never been released or teased though.

What do you mean by 2014-2015? I am not sure I follow what you mean.

@@RautaMetal So from Cosmic Key Creation licensed by DME Distribution and Century Media, included is a 24 page booklet written by Fredrik Söderberg. near the end there's an autobiography and the last 2 pages of it go like this
*(after a short paragraph of war music and MNW going bankrupt)*
"The 2006-2011 era- Tomas Asklund was finally back in DAWN after some successful years with Dissection. DAWN finished up riff tapes, got rid of some old songs/ideas, and started rehearsing and recording intensely. we spent hours jamming and re-arranging everything much better then it previously was and with no time limit, no label chasing us, and nothing disturbing us. Now all of our work was being done in Tomas Asklund's new"Studio Monolith ". Henke Ekeroth from Dark Funeral had joined us on bass and a strong focus was held on DAWN with a full line-up in place!
The songwriting process has been constantly evolving with songs being removed, added, rearranged, and riffs re-made.
Finally in 2014 the music/guitar riffs/bass/keys and arrangements were officially completed and recorded.
Alot of stuff has happened during these years that we will not choke you with.
This limited Cassettebox is for you our loyal fans!
Is this music or pure prophecy in its richest form? A testament to those who humbly accept its world?
As listeners we must be able to comprehend what we are truly dealing with when these hymns are echoed! ~"

Ok. Thanks. The good news is, after Dawn guy saw this video he came to thank me at Inferno 2022. As far as I know, Dawn is back doing new music.

I bought this album in autumn of '99.
Contrary to the opinions presented here, I think this is a really mediocre album.
One of the albums I shouldn't have bought in my teenager years.
And it is not the length of the songs but rather the mediocre quality of the songs.
I can understand why people consider the opening track the best, but in my
opinion it could be much better.
Slaughtersun was recorded in winter/spring of '97, but released a bit later in '98.
Two other Swedish black metal albums with lengthy songs were recorded at the same time:
Together We Summon the Dark by Abyssos & At the Sight of the Apocalypse Dragon by Midvinter.
I would take them over mediocre Slaughtersun.
I should have bought one of them instead back then.
Dawn's debut album from '94 is probably much better.

I would like this album so much more if it weren't so damn repetitive, every song is like three minutes too long

    • @summonliiva5673

But they mastered in making those repetitive riffs, very hypnotic.
