  • Sousou no Frieren otherwise known as Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, is a brand spankin' new Fantasy anime that has risen to the very top of the myanimelist anime charts. It has even beaten the long reigning king Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood at being the number 1 anime out there. But Frieren has done something even more important if you ask me. Frieren has quite possibly saved the fantasy genre of anime from it's Isekai hellscape. Join me today as I talk about why I believe Frieren could very well have saved fantasy anime.

    Not only is Frieren peak anime, it is actually an anime that I can recommend to family and friends who have no experience with anime without having to add an asterisk explain some weird anime-ism. It’s just a pure fantasy story that would fit alongside the likes of Lord of the Rings

      YES. I can recommend Frieren to almost all demographocs because it's just a normal good show.

    Frieren captures the loneliness and isolation people felt and their desire to reconnect with others in a post-COVID world.

    There are so many things I like about Frieren. One important piece is a nowadays seldom seen kind of slow storytelling. It gives scenes the appropriate amount of time without fear of an occasional Stille. ^^

    Non isekai fantasy anime has always been here and there but they don't get as much flair as isekai for some reason. Heck, even Dungeon Meshi is still airing right now.
    Next fantasy anime to look forward to will probably be Witch Hat Atelier... Assuming it won't be cheap ass animation. Because after all is said and done, the biggest weight of an anime isn't it's writing or setting, it's the animation budget. Even berserk can't save itself from bad 3d animation.

      Having excellent source material in the manga goes a long way. The art is crisp and expressive. Bringing motion, voice, and music so elegantly to an already great still-frame medium with the talent they have makes it that lightning in a bottle type anime you can't help but appreciate as art.

    3:28 And that, trust me, i appreciate so, so much. The not squeezing in unnecessary romance. The rest too of course, but as someone who gets literally nothing out of romance, trust me when i say so many shows with potential to be great ruin themselves, bringing the plot or character dynamics to a screeching halt to handle the romance, which usually isn't even well written in the first place.

    The isekai genre that got popularized throughout the 2010s ruined fantasy anime for me. For a long time, I never looked at anime the same way. Then came along grimgar, which showed me that there may still be some hope for fantasy anime. And surely, there was. When I heard news about frieren getting an anime adaptation, I was ecstatic. A story that decided to do something so vastly different from every single other fantasy story from every form of media was getting an anime adaptation so early in its lifespan.
    I knew it was gonna be incredible, but I was surprised it got as much praise as it did, seeing how the anime community tends to love the worst possible anime. I'm happy I was proven wrong.

    • @HeavyTopspin
      @HeavyTopspin 5 месяцев назад +3

      It's not that isekai is bad... it's that isekai seems to be the genre where lame stories on shoestring budgets wind up. First we get the "six shows with the same premise" issue - otome villainess! Kicked out of the hero's party! Slow life with waifus! Reincarnated as something weird! And of coruse, if JJK or Chainsaw Man were made with the budgets of the likes of Great Cleric or Vending Machine, they'd be considered hot garbage too. And then there's other issues, for instance notice that none of the "good" ones except for the OGs like SAO and Log Horizon are set in worlds with videogame logic for instance... and yet somehow we get 20 of those a year.
