  • My rendition of Queensryche's signature tune "Silent Lucidity", off of the 'Empire' album. I guess you could say this is certainly a more full-fledged and proper debut for my new acoustic/electric guitar I bought back in the summer (as sort of an homage to the 20-year-anniversary I first picked up a guitar - started with a not-so-great quality acoustic I bought in summer of '03...but this particular Breedlove Atlas AC25/SR makes up for that, it both sounds and plays great!). The starting tone is what the guitar sounds like naturally, then I added a touch of chorus, delay and reverb at 1:06 to sort of give it that 'fuller' and atmospheric sound (I'm pretty sure there are multiple guitars layered there in the actual song, including most likely a 12-stringer.)...then I did the split-screen trick again with my Jackson starting at 2:13 onward. Originally, I was going to do strictly just the acoustic, and do the solo with it too, but of course, distortion with an acoustic/electric isn't exactly the most reliable (lots of feedback and resonance issues, and I didn't want to dice-roll/potentially start over again and again over that)...so I arranged it slightly different, did the rhythm part there until it fades and then switched to the orchestra string-climb in that section (on a side note, a 'special shout-out' to the obnoxiously loud motorcycle that tried to screw me up in that from 3:37 - 3:41..."RAWRRRR! VROOM VROOM...ME JOHN BIG TREE! VROOM!"...ddddddd-baaaaag!!! Oh well, just pretend someone in the orchestra went crazy on the tuba or timpani there. lol) and then I did the solo with the Jackson over the top...which I made a few tiny tweaks with it (I also love the accidental partial-harmonic at 3:06, that sounded pretty cool and I was like "I HAVE to keep that!"). The ending with the acoustic from 5:12 onward was a classic case of "Don't choke, don't choke, don't choke, don't choke" hahaha...I had several practice-runs where I completely and utterly stumbled and botched it hardcore there, but luckily that didn't happen when the camera was rolling. Anyway, don't expect to see the acoustic (or split-screen stuff for that matter) toooo terribly often, but I'll dabble with it every now and then. Enjoy the 'Christmas present' of sorts and thanks for watching!
