@@Johnconno It's been awhile since I've seen Mean Streets, but apparently Scorsese did make it because of Cassavetes. The story I read in the book Cassavetes On Cassavetes was that Scorsese invited him to the premiere of Boxcar Bertha (cause Cassavetes was basically his mentor) and after the screening Cassavetes waited until everyone had finished congratulating Scorsese, then walked up to him and whispered in his ear something like "now that you're done making this piece of crap will you do something personal?" I think it was a bit of tough love that really affected Scorsese because if you look at any interview where he gives advice for aspiring filmmakers, even to this day, he's always talking about how important it is to make "personal" movies. The same book was also my source the story about them coming up with the idea for Chinese Bookie over a dinner.
To think this auteur, this "genius" has now been physically "gone" for 33 years!! Grateful for his 11 cinematic portraits! That we can experience...anytime!

Most of Mean Streets looks and sounds as though Cassavetes could have made it.
