Damn Dez was saying “I was trying to reach the goal line!”
You can hear the frustration in his voice.
Ba Bam and u could hear me crying on my couch 😂
I'm a Packer fan and even I know that was a catch, but at the end of the day you can't leave it up tot the refs.
@@J.B24 The packers did!
@cedricbeard NFL admitted recently it was a catch, so whatever you think you see doesn't matter. The current catch rule is the result of this catch and Megatrons catch @ Chicago.
cedricbeard it would count today, but not then, it wasn’t a catch. Tbf, actually, it would have never been overturned unless it was clear and obvious, a rule back then, which it wasn’t obvious. If it could have gone either way, you stuck w/ ruling on field
"How's that not a catch?! I tried to reach over the goal line!"
Even as an Eagles fan I can agree that line was utterly heartbreaking.
@cedricbeard Once again, the NFL even said last year that it was a catch. What you think doesn't matter.
cedricbeard how can he not have solid possession when he catches it with two hands, switches it to one hand and stretches out for the goal line? That’s literally what I’m seeing here I don’t know how you can see anything different
@LilCxsh1629* you are just being stupid and I have a felling that you're aware of it
@LilCxsh1629* sorry mate
that was a catch!
Literally all the Green Bay players were trying to decide whether it was a touchdown or down at the one. Everyone knew that it was a catch.

Denver, Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Indy played New England yearly and only did it once in a blue moon, I don't see the Cowboys as a team that could've done it first try.

I was a college QB at the time also so everyone in the locker room gave me crap for being a cowboys fan. This is the ONE and only time I have ever CRIED after a game. The anger I had was insane. So they lose in the worst way, I have a 6 hour drive back, phone being blown up, have to leave my gf, etc.. just a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE day. I kept saying that he caught that ball over and over again. The Dez catch was the topic for months after that. Still to this day I watch this and can get emotional.

Nfl finally admits Dez caught the ball
You're kidding??
Ryan Koplien ehh. They changed the rule and the new rule would have considered that a catch. But with the rule at the time, it was the right call if the ball did bounce off the ground. I’m not sure it did though.
John Schudar he was half falling half leaping forward, barely a football move. And again, they never admitted to getting the call wrong. They said the rule was dumb so they changed the rule because of this. But the call was correct based on the rules at the time.
John Schudar Calvin Johnson also had control of the ball, I agree it was a stupid rule but the call they made during this game was correct.
John Schudar lmao when the games on the line you worry about your face later and make the touchdown. You. An gal and put your arm forward? Just like dez did in the play. Started falling so tried to lunge himself forward. If this was a catch then so was Calvin Johnson’s. @@Boo_Yeahwait huh? What happen?
Even under their "complete the process" rule for a catch, it was a CATCH! I'm not a Cowboys fan at all, but I'm all for getting the call right. He took 3 steps with FULL CONTROL of the ball & lunged for the end zone. At worst, it should've been 1st & goal inside the 1. The Cowboys were robbed.
As a packers fan I truly agree with the fact that Bryant got robbed just like the Seahawks fail Mary. (Jennings’s interception that was ruled a Seahawks touchdown.)
Cry so more. Your offense was pathetic in that game. You guys didn’t deserve to win vs cowboys
It wasn't the last time either a couple of years later in the same stadium and same team playoff game there was 2 bs calls that put a 41 yard field goal to a 66 yard field goal or something like that. Nfl apologized every time for getting the calls wrong
Actually in your scenario if he took three steps and then it came out it would be a fumble because nobody touched him after he took those steps and it would be a touchdown because he recovered his own fumble
Full control?
This must have destroyed Dez Bryant inside. This was the play of his career arguably one of the top 5 catches in pro football history. Just watching how Dez Bryant leaped so high compared to the corner back and it was amazing. What a robbery to Dez and the Dallas Cowboys. This is why I think the NFL is rigged at times because this play was reviewed in slo-mo and they still called it incomplete.
that ain't no top 5 catch at all
Micscience I know how you feel, same with the Panthers in Super Bowl 50 when Jerricho Cotchery caught the ball and in the replay it was cleary shown he had full control, but yet they still called it incomplete. NFL is rigged.

Jason DeLeon hell naw I wasn’t lmao yeah I knew the lions got cheated. THEY’RE THE LIONS. We have the birthright. Missing calls and punishing athleticism are two separate issues. This was our year. They literally punished dez for being football athletic. That’s worth a tear
Jeff Samuels lol you’re year for what exactly? They wouldn’t have won that Game even if it was called a catch. Rodgers would’ve gotten the ball back with two minutes at least. We all know he would’ve driven them down to win the game anyways. It was a bad call I tend to agree, but those calls happen all the time unfortunately. And you have to overcome them. Dallas also screwed up right before the half if you recall, and gave away points themselves.

he didnt secure the ball in the air. in his jump he the ball was moving in his fall he tucked the ball and when he landed he reached out and lost control again. under rules of that year - it was not a catch because he trapped the ball on the ground while falling. under new rules it would be.
You seem to be under the delusion that a player who's lunging becomes a runner. Not true. Once a player is not balanced on his feet, it's the same if he's lunging with his feet pumping or if he's diving and has left the ground entirely. Either way, the whole lunch or dive is considered part of the process of the catch and you have to survive the ground, which James and Bryant didn't do.
hagamapama no the lunging part isn’t a real thing lol they don’t have that in the rule book (I know I have an official copy of the rule book and I’ve studied since I was young) because it would be waaaay too arbitrary and subjective. Like then whose to say when someone is lunging or just getting their legs back under control etc. they couldn’t put that disclaimer in there because it just would be crazy subjective and nothing would be clear. Trust me I’ve looked through hundreds of tiny rule side notes. The refs just got it wrong they screwed themselves over thinking like you that dez was falling down from the catch when he actually caught the ball came down and took a few steps then tumbled down. Jon Burd the problem is that there is no visual proof the ball hit the ground. It was 50/50 that the ball hit the ground. In that case, it’s not enough evidence to overturn the call. Your argument would be valid if you had 100 percent proof the ball hit the ground.
Horns up!

John Kalliny The refs (and my eyes tbh, especially in real time it looks pretty clear) interpreted Dez as being in the process of falling (i.e. going to the ground) from the moment he came down with the ball. Therefore, he has to maintain control of that ball all the way through impacting the ground. The number of steps he take isn't relevant to whether it's a catch, because he was already in the process of falling. He didn't maintain control, so it's not a catch.
I don’t know why I re-watch this, I get so mad 😠

Tey Tey I think it was the fail mary
I think it was the tuck rule. The only difference was that there was no replay then. Between the tuck rule, the fail mary, the Dez Non-catch, and the Megatron touchdown that wasn't, I can't decide which is worse.
Tey Tey it's still around you know however the ratings this year.
Brandon Buchner Smart man right here
there was replay during the tuck rule game, it just wasn't as involved as it is now
It was a catch coming from a packer fan, but we will take it!

Opinion wise, many people would say it's a catch. But by rule it was not a "catch". Also a packer fan.
lolol
+Theo Kehoe PSHH. No shit, What Packers fan doesn't use that "by rule it wasn't a catch" bullshit. It's mostly people being biased, roles are reversed and I guarantee you Packers fans say it was a catch.
It was a catch and everyone knows it was. Took plenty of steps for it to be ruled a catch, landed on his elbow before the ball even popped out. The ball never hit the ground he never lost possession. If he did lose possession at that point it woulda been a fumble not an incomplete pass. Total bs
Patriots fan btw born and raised in New England not a crap given about the Cowboys
He never gained possession.
+KiD 504# yes he did
+brent burdett Or maybe you should see an eye doctor...He bobbled the ball ...Possession is not acquired while bobbling the ball.
+KiD 504# he bobbled the ball after he gained possession. At that point it's a recovered fumbles which is the same thing
Even IF the ball hit the ground, he had control and took two steps - a clear football move.
Also ground can’t cause a fumble it’s so distinct and easy to call
@@jofieji5312plus once it broke the plane what happens with the ball is irrelevant since the ground caused the break up. Should’ve been a touchdown. Cowboys got robbed and I’m not even a cowboy fan
@@spencerdoss1571 yeah he shouldn’t have tried to reach for it though
@@jofieji5312 Apparently, the ground can cause an incomplete pass. If the ball touches the ground and it leaves the receiver's hands afterwards, which it did in this case, automatic incomplete. If Dez had kept his hands on the ball like he should have, Gene Steratore wouldn't have overturned the call.
@@Ecliptonyes the ground can cause a fumble and if the ball hits the ground then it’s not a catch. However, for this catch I don’t think the ball ever hit the ground at all and he got up with the ball so it never hit the ground at all if it didn’t touch on the roll around. The fact that it was inconclusive and ruled as a catch on the field makes that a catch imo…and I hate the cowboys but that shoulda been a tub

TheNotoriousWWE same he caught it too same exact kind of catch. Same scenario if nothing else fumble recovered by him for a TD.
Nope. Same deal, you're right. Diving for a bit of extra personal glory, James cost his team a catch that would have resulted in a much more favorable field position.
It's receiving 101. Secure. The. Rock. All of these 'contoversial' catches happened because someone was taking a boneheaded risk with the football and lost control at the last second because they were either showboating or playing for personal glory.
I'm glad people get burnt by that occasionally, because it's TERRIBLE football. Instead of trying to be a superstar, how about you be a professional wide receiver and secure the damn ball?
I come back every year reminiscing this moment and watching it live haunts me til this day tht was actually our year

i do not think that you could reverse that there has to be enough evidence to overturn the call and we could not tell that the ball hit the ground so without enough evidence you cannot overturn a call, packer fan
Slow it down at 2:22, the ball definitely hits the ground, causing Dez to lose control of it.
+Kevin Witkowski he was down before he lost control of it and he had possession the whole time it should've been considered a fumble
Even if the ball hit the ground it should've been a fumble, not a no catch because he was already in possession and had taken several steps
^First off if a ball pops out due to the ground it is not a fumble
Crayola Master If the guy had already caught the ball and taken several steps? of course it is
I always thought the definitive aspect of the play was that he actually shifted the ball from his right to his left hand in order to reach across the goal line. How one could overturn the call on the field given that aspect, I don't know.
I didn't notice that aspect until you mentioned it.
So he bobbled initially but got control, 3 feet down, shifted the ball, a football move, and lunged for the goal line, a second football move .
Even then seems like more than enough to have been a catch.
On here cause me and my dad were just talking about this game today on Christmas. I have ALWAYS said this exact thing for the past 7 years!! Not only did he take 2-3 steps. He switches the ball to left hand and extends the ball! Watching this all these years later still bothers the hell out of me. So he made “an act common to the game” in two different ways.. the steps and the reach. By the definition of catch we have today. He would have fulfilled the requirements twice. And then like you said, them calling it a TD and then over ruling the call on the field. Absolutely crazy. Today that play would stand 100 times out of 100.
great point
Only thing i can think of is surviving the ground was a bigger term or focus then so they incorrectly processed the order wrong. 3rd step after having control means he is a runner there fore surviving the ground doesnt apply.
Here since he is falling they process surviving the ground 1st before anything which makes this not a catch since the ball hits the. Thats the important part.
it helps they defined this in later seasons.
Horrible call. THE BALL DOES NOT TOUCH THE GROUND AT ANY POINT.
James Bayly it did touch the ground
it did touch the ground, thing is its still a catch, should be spotted at the 1 yard line
Viliyan Donchev it's not
Kobe Bryant he is making a football move, diving towards the endzone to score a touch down, when you make a football move you become a runner with the ball, when you are a runner with the ball it means you have caught it, when a runner touches the ball to the ground the play ends there and is treated the same as a lnee or elbow touching the ground. Looking at the facts: dez catches the ball, keeps controll, makes a football move and takes a few steps therefor being a runner with the ball, touches the ball to the ground therefor the play is dead at the 1 yard line setting up a first and goal = yes, it was a catch
Viliyan Donchev He made the move, fell down with the ball in what is clearly a fumble, then recovers it. Touchdown Cowboys.
0:19-0:27 Murray got more yards then this whole season so far
Sad but true

As a packer fan... He did score.. I see this now and he did have control.. I felt. So bad for Dez.. He was good...
I read that the player who was covering Dez Bryant agrees that it was a catch.
And the way everybody knew it was a catch but they cheered when it was overturned.
The refs definitely got paid by the packers
NFL politics at its worst
verycoyman trying to keep the black man down
he did not get control of ball until he was just landing and then only had time for 2 steps. think the rule is you have to make 3 steps and a "football move". he did not take the 3 steps or make a football move and since the ball hit the ground when he dove for goal line it was correctly called NO CATCH
Bryant caught the ball in the air what are you not seeing dude...
he only had 2 steps. rules are, he must make 3 steps and make football move.
So you watched the video, he has possession of the ball in the air and comes down with two feet...Then he takes a third step and lunges for the end zone....But if you want to hate on the completion to make yourself feel better feel free. the League is going to review it 4 years to late...But it is clear Bryant has the ball secure and possessed in the air and gets twp feet down...
I agree it's a catch but I guess Dez should have never reached for the endzone. I also like how even Clay Matthews thought it was a catch
What do you mean he shouldnt have tried to score.'are you stupid
I think he means if there was enough time for at least 4 more downs dez did not have to try and reach over the goal line but I don't know how much time there was left but I still think it was a catch.

Dez 88 caught it cowboys for life
south s1d3r not a catch
There were still 5 minutes on the clock idiot
He caught the ball, fumbled, recovered for TD - Patriots fan
Possession was already established, so play is dead as soon as the ball hits (ground can't cause a fumble). If you pause it, you can clearly see that the nose of the football is about an inch shy of the goal line when it hits the ground. Should be 1st and goal from one inch away. (Niners fan)
You have to follow through with possession all the way to the ground! And that he did not. He never established possession of the football, not even close. It's a fact it's not a catch!!! Listen to the rule makers they know what they're talking about. They made the rules.
Yeah actually I concede damon that is the rule. Not a catch. I can imagine much murkier situations where it would be very subjective to determine if a player is "going to the ground" in the process of a catch, e.g. if he takes three or four steps semi-upright. It is pretty clear in this case though. (Also on rewatching, his knee hits milliseconds before the ball. So maybe he'd be two inches away if he had possession. But that's a moot point.)
damon tussing The ball never hit the ground though... why is it incomplete?
but it did clearly hit the ground. stop trying to argue something that youre wrong about
I miss Dez Bryant. He earned Dallas #88, which is hard to do. That was a great catch and you can say it was karma for the pass interference against the Lions and you can say that the rules state this or that but Dez made a fantastic play that would be considered one of the greatest receptions ever and it could have been a game winning touchdown on 4th down with minimal time left in a big playoff game. It was an incredible effort and one of the greatest plays that didn't count. That bugs me to this day...
I believe it would of been another cowboy dynasty if he caught that ball cuz the cowboys was meant to go to the Superbowl that year
They beat Seattle once in Seattle already that year, they could've done it again for sure, especially seeing how sloppy the Seahawks played against the Packers. However, they probably would've lost to the Patriots in the SB anyways, only Seattle with their defense had a chance to contain Brady.

You think the Cowboys would have stopped 2014 Aaron Rodgers, with 4 minutes and a timeout, from getting into field goal range or finding the endzone? You know how that game would have ended.
Salad Tongs now you’re making solid assumptions. Mainly because they had stopped him pretty well throughout this entire game, there is no reason to not believe they couldn’t keep it up.
@@ryanrzjr I dont have to make an assumption. The Cowboys turned it over on downs and what happened? Rodgers pushed the ball to the Cowboys 23 yard line, with 1:50 and a timeout remaining. Then they ran out the clock.
The Cowboys had their chance to stop him and get the ball back, and he picked them apart. Even if that was a catch and Dallas scored, Rodgers proved that he could move the ball well into range with plenty of time.
I will honestly say I don't watch a lot of football, but I watched this game with my family when it aired, and we all went crazy when he caught it. We were speechless when the play was reversed. My dad said, "If that's not a catch, I don't know what football is."

To this day, this play, this call, and this game still haunt me. Literally sealed the fate for Tony Romo and his legacy. Not saying the Cowboys would have beat the Seahawks in the Championship Game (Cowboys beat the Seahawks 30-23 in week 6 in SEA), but the Cowboys making it to the big game sure did seem like a real possibility. Glad to see the NFL is taking a look at the "Catch Rule" and the circumstances which referees go to replay. Having watched this catch well over 100 times, there is no way any reasonable person can see enough "evidence" here to overturn the original ruling on the field, which was a catch (especially during real time when everything is much more hurried). Honestly can't think of a bigger robbery than this one.
At the very LEAST they put him at the 1 yd line and let Romo sneak it in next down or better yet, have 4 fresh downs with the RB pounding the line. Steeler fan here, y'all beat us in a superbowl back in the 90s and pissed me off real good. But I'm with you on this. Dez had that one.
@true brodie what did he do the next game though lol.
Pack still had to run 5 min off the clock. Went right down the field. Blame your shitty defense not refs moron
Just happened in the Super Bowl. Eagles had a catch that wasn't a catch. Took 3 steps, player gets hit, ball pops out. Recovered on a scoop and score by the Chiefs. Oh... wait a minute. He didn't make a football move. WHAT?? He changed hands with the ball! Did it end up mattering in this game? No the Chiefs still won, but the Cowboys loss in Green Bay still pisses me off.
@@garygsp3 Miles only takes 2 steps and is tucking the ball away. We lost still, but that wasnt a catch and never has been a catch.
The more similar play was Zach Ertz catching the ball against the Pats in the 4th qtr taking 3 steps then diving for the goal line and the ball hitting the ground.
Still brings tears to my eyes because when it happened it was a catch. Nobody could convince me otherwise. That was the most heartbreaking loss I’ve felt as a cowboys fan alongside Dez being my second favorite cowboy all time.
