I was born in Rio de Janeiro and I was also there on that night at Rock in Rio festival in 1985, that inspired James to write this song. I remember being very close to the stage and I witnessing the look of surprise on his face when over 250,000 Brazilian voices started singing along with him. What a night! Thanks for such a beautiful song, James. I'm sure you know how much Brazil loves you and your music. I also know how important that night was for your life and it was a privilege for me to be there.
I just LOVE the sheer enthusiasm of this performance. For those interested in what he sings in Portuguese on the mid section, here it goes: "When our mother awakes / We'll walk under the sun / When our mother awakes / She'll sing throughout the outback / When our mother awakes all of her siblings will just know / All of her siblings will surely know / And they,ll overjoy" In the end of the performance, but not in the original studio recording, he and the backup singers repeat "and they'll overjoy".
I'm still in shock and disbelief that the James Taylor RUclips channel is now full of vintage footage that to the best of my knowledge no one has ever seen before. JT Team, you're doing a great public service by releasing clips like this! I'm a 31 year old JT fan so this era of his career was before I was born but I remember the "That's Why I'm Here" songs because I'm pretty sure I had the CD at some point. "Only a Dream in Rio" is one of my favorites from this era. My mom who has his earlier albums on vinyl says I've liked his music since I was at least 4 years old.. which is a story I cannot fully explain because I don't know how it happened. I just know as of 2018 (my last show) I've seen him in concert five times since I was in high school, starting with the 2010 Troubadour Reunion Tour that had Carole King.
THIS IS SO SPECTACULAR! This song was always so dreamy, taking me - and likely you - to another place. Hypnotic keys from Billy, beautiful harmonies. James in perfect voice. The recording is so clean. THANKS for sharing this magical tune.
Love this! JT as simultaneously laid-back every-man and incredibly solid bandleader-and what a band! I also like how the camera work often features long, dwelling shots, unlike what seems to be a near-universal approach nowadays of changing the shot every 3 seconds (or even more quickly). Thanks, JT team, for sharing this. -Tom
Love how James can capture the good vibes of any place, any season, any time and put it into some pretty smooth lyrics. The Latin rhythms in this one just grab you by the core!!! Great song James, thanks!!!!
Yamaha makes great sounding and beautifully crafted guitars at an affordable price. Never been disappointed with the multiple Yamaha musical instruments I've played. All rock solid , detailed craftsmanship and balanced sound. Nothing wrong with JT playing yamaha or any other brand. Its all in the hands!
In this setting, I would agree. Through a pickup, I think the difference is hard to tell. Acoustic, somewhat of different story. In this situation, it's all about setup and skill. Joe Pass, for example, could pickup a guitar made of a box and a broom stick and make it sound great.
Juro! ❤
Beautiful description by James, capturing the very essence in this case, of Rio de Janeiro, but that applies to all of Brazil, a sister country as precious as this song! Tanks James, one more time!!!
This was great to hear! I have always loved hearing you and the first year was maybe 2002 in Norman where I live and I have seen you also in OKC and Tulsa so so hope you can come to Oklahoma again!
Beautiful song James ! Love all of your songs since 1970, have all of the records, seen you live 6 times !!! There’s nobody who comes close to your talent!! Thanks for sharing this amazing talent with the world 🌍!!! ❤❤❤❤🎸🎸🙏🏻🙏🏻🎼🎼😊
This beautiful voice! The songs of my life! Love you, James! Your voice is a message from my Dad, who died on my birthday, just like your beloved brother died on yours... it connects us like you will never know...
I would love a little information on this concert. I saw him in Sunrise, Florida in 1986, and this has that feel to it. I really enjoyed those two backup singers. I believe it was his last concert before he was touring overseas. Something like that. The concert at Sunrise was just so amazing and had a tangible spiritual quality to it. I went with my boyfriend at the time, who was a jazz guitarist, studying at the University of Miami. He was so impressed.... ❤❤ I just saw his brother Livingston up in Bellows Falls, Vermont for a Christmas show. As usual, he was simply wonderful! Such an amazing family.🎉❤
The description to the above RUclips video mentions it's from a German music program. I'm not from Germany myself though so unfortunately I can't really tell you much about "Ohne Filter". I'm just another fan, one who wasn't born yet in 1986. I'm 31 but that's cool you saw his brother Livingston. The two background singers I believe are Arnold McCuller and Rosemary Butler which I already knew due to seeing different footage from the 80s. Here they are again. I remember this concert from Public television because it had been recorded onto a home VHS tape not by me, but my mom. I just kept it around because it's more or less how I remember first seeing James Taylor. ruclips.net/video/x4qjS5Q2Xqg/видео.html
Is that JT playing a Yamaha? A "Poor Mans Martin"? I'd love to know the story behind that. I'm not putting down Yamaha - I grew up playing several Yamaha guitars and still have several. But, I've never seen JT playing one until now and I'd love to hear the story behind why he was playing one in this video or at this gig.
@davehardy9555 the story of JT guitars its quite remarkable. First he had the Gibson J50. From 1969 till the end of 1972 (from Sweet Baby James to One Man Dog). During One Man dog sessions he get in touch with Whitebook guitars trough John McLaughin. And since 1973 until 1985 he stays with his own Mark Whitebook signature. So from Walking Man to the Dad loves his work album thats the guitar youre hearing. He lost the original Whitebook during his divorce with Carly Simon in 1983 so he had to build another one. But I think he needed something new and playable trough out his travels so after try some Martin guitars, Takamine, etc… He gets his Yamaha signature at the end of 1985. He uses it from 1985 to 1989 (Thats why im here and Never Die Young album) where he finally gets his famous Olson Guitar on guitar case in a hotel room. He explains part of this staff in a video he has on his RUclips channel. Hope it helps Dave!
Hi look up "James Taylor me and my guitars UTube full interview " he goes through his main acoustics through the years and the custom Yamaha is there he chats about it He also played a takamine for a few years check it out it's a great video ...cheers.
Always a real threat to see the late great Carlos Vega on drums with JT. And that song obsesses me, I think it's Russ on the studio take, just beautiful.
I love this song since the first time i have listened to in this performance. At the following link i have played the bass line with my Ibanez GWB35: ruclips.net/video/RXCHaNZGiew/видео.htmlsi=egoC5gKulMevapVr

It is moving to see the great unforgettable Carlos Vega on drums. He is so sadly missed. RIP Carlos your music lives on forever.
Yes , Carlos Vega was a great Drummer/Session player ! Just so Perfect in every way 🥁🎶
One of the very greatest

Oh James!!!🥰❤️
This show has one of the best versions of JT’s music, that I forget what the original sounded like. I’m deeply attached to this live version

There is a video of James telling the stories of his guitars. Interesting stuff there.
