- After the 2005 blockbuster that was the original 'God Of War,' you'd imagine that Sony Santa Monica set their sights on the next big thing, right? A sequel would obviously be next in line, but that's not what I mean by 'next big thing,' I'm talking about the PlayStation 3, the latest in Sony's line of home consoles. Kratos, the legendary Ghost Of Sparta, was never one to follow tradition, never one to concede to any set path. Maybe it was that mindset that laid the foundation for his second adventure... An adventure that would continue to unfold on the PlayStation 2. Would the decision to not leap into the next generation result in a less than stellar, 'been there, done that' outing for our favorite ashen warrior? Or would serving as the swan song for the highest selling video game console of all time help God Of War achieve legendary status in just its second outing?

What a video, man. The stories in these games always seem SO grandiose, you can tell the developers really put a ton of care into the whole thing by including all the Easter eggs and references.

Not only that when you fight against Perseus. They brought the actor who did role of him in the HarryHausen’s Clash of he Titans. Also in God of War 3 we all know who voiced Hercules in that one.
Love it man! I was 16 when I first played this masterpiece, then I had to wait 7 years to play GOW3 because I missed the entire ps3 gen during high school and college. That ending, with the titans and Kratos scaling Mt. Olympus, never left my mind!

Watching this best sequel game of God of War just really takes me back ever since it came out back in 2007,and it’s the year when PS3 came. It also originally attended to be a PS3 game at the time. They did a good job that it’s on the PS2 instead.

It wasn't never intended to be a PS3 game. Before production began there was a feeling of "Sony's probably going put this on PS3, right?" But it was Shuhei Yoshida himself who wound up telling Jaffe and Barlog it as staying put.

I had a ps2 as a kid/teenager and somehow never played these games and I switched to 360 since the ps3 was $600 and been an Xbox guy ever since but I recently got ps2 and this retrospective makes me want to play them! By the love the streets of rage music in the background

I haven’t played GOW2 in a long time. Beat it several times when it came out back on PS2 but haven’t picked it up in a while. From memory this is my favorite GOW game but I need to replay GOW3 again to truly determine. Great work Ian! You always deliver homie!

This was indeed legendary and to this day one of the best ps2 games ever released, I was in the same place as you man, my ps2 and I took one last adventure with GoW 2 and I couldn't of had it any other way! I loved playing God Of War 2 as the Hydra armor was my favorite suit. I was still shocked of what Zeus did to Kratos.

God of War 2 is easily one of the best sequels ever. It was everything the first God of War was only it was turned up to another level. And that ending cliffhanger had you so ready for the next part of the story.
I always thought it was so cool that it was only on ps2. It's like if you didn't have a ps3 don't worry about it you get to play this gem only on ps2. Great work as always man. These history of videos are my favorite things that you put out. I always learn things I didn't know or it gives me nice dose of nostalgia.

A few questions I have:
How long did production take on the sequel vs the first God of War? Who was responsible for such impressive writing? Finally why is it that Santa Monica Studio was able to do so much more graphically than any other game studio? Was their staff that much larger? Even now the graphics and facial animations look impressive.

As far as production goes, the first one came out in 2005 and this one in 2007. Obviously any first entry takes longer than the sequel because you have to create all of the baseline framework, sequels can borrow from pre-existing assets from prior installment. Sony Santa Monica were and are still just an extremely talented group of people, man. That's part of why I wanted to do this, to really celebrate their work!

This video gets a thumbs up just for the Streets of Rage 2 soundtrack. One of my favorite soundtracks from any video game. Awesome part 2 episode. Sadly I never got the chance to play GOW2. Sounds and looks so epic after watching this video. Amazon is producing a GOW series and I hope they incorporate all of this into the series. I remember being on spring break on my first year if highschool, maybe 16-17 and just ripping through this game that time. Beating it on every difficulty and completing the challenges. But above everything else just thinking about that ending, possibly the biggest ending in gaming for me at that time.
I know I'm late, but I FINALLY got to watch this! And oh god Ian, you continue to deliver the goods. I wish I could've been here for the live premiere. I just finished watching and now I can't wait for part 3! God of War 3 is one of my favorite games EVER! Stay awesome!

That Pegasus aerial battle was a smack in the mouth for what is to come in the game. You have not only the *Pantheon of Olympus* targeting Kratos, but you also have *The Sisters of Fate* throwing their card in the ring too. It gives you the hate fuel needed to go ham on all of Olympus when you catch up with them. The revealing of Zeus as Kratos father was a HUGE bombshell. The game long as sh*t tho, but you gotta love it. *(side note:Gaia was missing her juice box.)
What do Kratos, Bruce the shark from Finding Nemo and I have in common? The 3 of us don’t know our fathers :)

This is just as good as the history of mortal kombat! I am really excited about the part about "the chains of Olympus" and "Ghost of Sparta". I played them on the psp as a child and still, 8 years later, I play them on the same old half broken psp just to relive the greatness of Kratos!
I hope it's better than The History of MK, that was 4 years ago, I'd like to think I've gotten better! lol

Harryhausen movies are the shit. I showed Jason and the Argonauts to a friend who'd never seen it before quite recently, and even I was floored by some of the sequences in it. The skeletons at the end, how they interact with the actors, amazing.
Game looks cool. Maybe one day I'll get around to the series. That Cory Barlog seems like a dude.

I’m there with you bro when I was growing up me & my ps2 were the best of friends & I didn’t know anything about god of war until damn near years later but by the time I found out about it I had a Xbox!!! Can't do those, sorry. Only played KH1 for like an hour, I've only beaten FFVI and VII. I do adore Ninja Gaiden on NES, though. If I had the knowledge base I could do more, but sadly, I don't!
God of war is just one of those perfect franchises hands down.

What I loved, besides the whole game, was Harry Hamlin played Perseus (as he did in the original film “Clash of the Titans”).
As a big fan of the original "Clash of the Titans," I popped hard when I saw that Perseus looked like and was voiced by Harry Hamlin...this would be repeated during God of War III when I found out that Kevin Sorbo was voicing Hercules.

I waited on doing 2018 and Kills to avoid rushing things, and trying to create a retrospective on a film that came out like 2 weeks ago makes zero sense. So I’m going to do a full movie of the five History Of Halloween parts, probably 2-3 new Halloween videos, and an Ends review. Part VI will come when it makes more sense.

It's nuts that Sony didn't immediately port this to the PS3 (I know it would be released on the console two years later, but I mean on its initial release.) On one hand, it's pretty cool that they gave an exclusive game to those who kept their PS2's. On the other hand, I'm sure they missed out on a lot of sales from gamers who had already moved on to the PS3 and may have gotten rid of their old PS2.

It's a great game.
As great as this series is and as many ppl love it, in a weird way it still feels underrated to me like it never gets enough attention. Probably because before the last game it's glory days were older Gen but regardless, how many franchises out there have had a run of games where not a single one was bad?

By the Greek God's I've been waiting for this Video for Months,especially with GOW2 being tied next to the 2018 Sequel as some of my absolute Favorite Video Games of All time.
I remember sitting at my Computer Screen for Months just looking up the Artwork,behind the scenes videos,and Walkthroughs until I finally got my hands on the game.
I distinctly remember my Game being scratched up and having to Witness Michael Clarke Duncan's Voicing the Titan Atlas describe the Creation of the Blade of Olympus only for the game to stop over and OVER again until after like 10 tries I pulled the game out and Swabbed that Goddamn disk for like 10 minutes with my shirt and Water and Cleaning shit before finally it worked.
That night I didn't put the controller down until i witnessed the death of the Sisters of Fate,going back in time to fight Zeus and kill Athena,only for my jaw to be on the Floor when the Ending teased the Olymians Witnessing Kratos Leading The newly freed Titans on the Sack of Olympus Itself.
