I got into cycling right as The Williams Brothers started their L39ion team. As someone with also a Belizean background, the inspiration these dudes gave me early on was truly special. Even had the opportunity to met the Williams Bros in person few years back. Stand up act.
@PatrickLino You have also inspired many into the sport of cycling through all your amazing RUclips video uploads and cycling adventures. One of the biggest barriers for some black and minority groups getting into cycling has been the costs of the bikes and related equipment. However, you have shown that anyone can get into cycling on a limited budget and still thoroughly enjoy the sport. We all give you and RobbArmstrong many thanks and appreciation for all that you both have personally done for the cycling community. Thank You!!
@@cyberx7098 Thanks bruh! Dont make me cry right now…
@@PatrickLino I agree! thank you for your amazing video's.
💪🔥
As a Mexican American, The Williams Bros inspired me to start cycling back in 2019 after reading an article on Outside Magazine. 2024 was my first racing season with a local team and did about 15 races.
Girmay is amazing. So glad you got to interview him!
love girmay but williams bros are corny and made their own domestic league bc they couldn't hack it in europe
It's too bad they didn't interview Rahsaan Bahati, his story and career was influential in even shaping the Williams bros. He is such an inspirational rider and pioneer in the sport for men of color. Not taking anything away from Justin and Corey, they are taking the torch and moving forward
The local amateur racing scene here in NYC, much like the people of the city, is actually pretty diverse! You have to get up at 5am or earlier to catch a race in Prospect or Central Park, but when you do, you'll see racers who reflect a wider range of ethnicities and cultures than the professional world of bike racing.
good point...they kina missed on the large amount of Spanish , Ecudorian, ,etc racers that are in the pro peloton
Pretty slick that the reporter gets to do a story on his favorite activity. I can just hear him pitching that idea to his bosses.
I think he managed to get a free Rapha kit out of the deal lol
Biniam Girmay made it for me with his 3 Tour de France Stage victories as well as holding and gaining the Green Sprinter Jersey for much of Tour.
I cycle to clear my head and be alone... cheers.
Actually the first black cyclist at the TdF was Yahann Gene in 2011. Not much coverage on Major Taylor or Nelson Vails.
I watched Justin win the Harlem Skyscraper Cycling Classic and it brought tears to my eyes to see all the Belizean people rush him after crossing the finish line. They were so proud of him. Girmay was electric during the last Tour De France. This sport is incredible!
Expensive equipment is the main issue...if Kenya can produce marathoners...it can produce Tour winners.....in time.
Great segment, we need to have more stories like this! Good Job!!
Some people go to church on Sunday to feel good about themselves. I ride my bike.
"Rising?" - I feel like the national multi-champion has already risen at age 35. 🤷🏽♂
Thank you for being a guiding light, Justin and Cory.
Glad you’re covering this!
I love cycling and it’s great seeing more people that look like me out here cycling and starting cycling clubs
There is a black rider from the caribbean island of Trinidad riding in the women's pro tour!
Teniel Campbell is a racing cyclist from Trinidad and Tobago, in the Caribbean, who currently rides for UCI Women's WorldTeam Liv AlUla Jayco.
Girmay is the real deal. Williams is a well documented jerk.
What does he do that makes him a jerk?
@@joeumphenour4790 Some bad behaviour at crit races.
@@bengt_axle
Some?? How about a lot.
You can't judge a person by a couple of "in the heat of battle" exchanges. Every pro athlete in the USA has had a scrape or two. Myself included. Doesn't make them jerks. I know them personally and they are great guys, all 3 of them. Very approachable and friendly
Yeah...we have never done anything bad in our lives @bengt_axle
Very nice segment! Go Bini! And Williams! Both are great cyclist
Of course, they only had five minutes to tell a story, but they left out how *startup cost* is such a big barrier to kids that want to enter the sport. Most start cycling solo, so they have no team or sponsor to help. This makes it different from other traditional team oriented sports that have infrastructure like boosters and brands with very deep pockets.
Nice footage & an inspiring story @Good Morning America 📌
Cycling is too expensive. Equipment is too expensive. Shoes and apparel is too expensive. You want to see more minorities in cycling? That’s not happening.
Cycling is not expensive. If it is you are doing it wrong and/or not comparing it to other hobbies that most people do.
I'll believe it's too much when I stop seeing hillbillies and hood brothers at the dragstrip with 30+k into an 87 monte carlo drag car.
Wow. Automatically thinking people of color are broke. Such a defeatist attitude. We know who not to come to to make a difference.
it can happen, you just got to wait for the deals and when other people have sales. Those are the steps people can take to get new gear. its like getting a car, do you go get the new one or a used car?
Cycling has become quite alot more expensive in the last few yrs with the rapid inflation rates and truth is i even know alot of white people of average income who recently stopped participating in bike races, not because they didnt enjoy it but simply just because of the increased cost of the race and travel fees and the general needs for the latest equipment to be equally competitive, which can nowdays be upward of 5 to $6,000 just for an average level racing bike... So based on that i dont see how very many poverty level kids from the hood regardless of their race are going to be rushing into competitive cycling in the yrs ahead.
I got into cycling this year because of
@ All City Grand Prix
Good to be inclusive and find a space out there I’ll have to check out more of what legion is doing this upcoming year
New to Cycling too. Black new cyclist, happy to see this
Wonderful
That’s great.
I rode on a l39ion social ride in park city a couple of years ago. great people in that organization
Excellent
That’s cool. Good stuff
feel good segment
Natnael Tesfatsion from Eritrea to me is MORE consistent that Girmay. And there are 3 other powerful riders from that same country!
Justin Williams is a stud
Seriously ABC - do your homework - look at how they race, the way they act, the financials of the Williams Brothers and see just how much $$ they are keeping for themselves, what they drive, the homes they live it while other racers scrape to get by - they are playing the race card for financial gains - they fly to Belize with a crew with their sponsored free bikes to race & beat 3rd world bike racers in their own Country's Nation race -then Cory uses that to go to the UCI Worlds Championship race and gets beat by lesser known country's riders - these guys are a joke & not someone to look up to - they haven't even paid out the race winnings from a race they sponsored back in 2021!!!
They are nothing but dirty crit riders. Justin nearly killed a friend of mine's son the last time he got caught. He has been suspended twice in the past two years, and still has NEVER publicly apologized. I don't care what the pigmentation in his skin might be cycling does not need this element!!!
Cycling is a microcosm in the U.S, with little to no money to be made at a professional level in the U.S. the best athletes in the U.S. most whom are POC and become professional athletes want to get paid. This debate has been ongoing for decades, it’s not a color issue it’s economic.
BKOB!!! (Black Kids On Bikes)
What percentage are indian or asian?
Wow. Ok. Hello from Europe. Good luck (I guess?)
Yay Justin!
Why press the issue of diversity and inclusion when sports are based on performance, not color. This is corny.
Opening the door for everyone
It’s not about race people. You don’t have to make it about race
today i had to fill out my paperwork and check off my race box. Race is heavily integrated into society(it nothing new, been there since the beginning), no matter how many times Morgan Freeman says not to talk about it.
You missed the point. The story made it about race because the sport is dominated by whites. The point was to inspire people who otherwise might look past cycling.
I'm not sure why you see harm in bringing awareness to facts and a story that attempts to change that fact.
You're not inspired? Great. Let others get inspired then.
The story IS about race though...it is about inspiring others who might have glossed over cycling due to it being a prodominately white sport.
In the comments of this video alone, several have commented stating they were inspired by the Justin.
You're not inspired? Great, let others get inspired. I personally would love to see more diversity in the sport I love and that is the point, which you've entirely missed.
Lets be honest Justin Williams has more in common with Lance Armstrong than he does with Biniam Girmay. They're from completely different countries/cultures. This need to box ppl by their skin color is so outdated.
But in the cotext of the video , No
@@mindfull_being123context is king.
He actually doesn't have anything in common with either of them. They are/were World Tour pros...Williams is just another dirty crit rider. BIG difference!!! Yep, suspended twice in the last two years for dangerous riding, and I have seen numerous other occasions he should have been suspended.
@@RobertTarmac bwahaha I'll accept that...
@@mindfull_being123 what's the context again?
IMO it is hard to get anybody to like type 2 fun (an activity that is challenging and uncomfortable in the moment, but is rewarding and fun to reflect on later) Cycling chose the William's brothers the Williams brother did not choose cycling. The Williams brother would have been a positive influence in the community if Tiddlywinks was their sport. Chapeau to the Williams brothers
why are people so obsessed with diversity
What exactly is wrong with inspiring others to dabble in something they ordinarily wouldn't think about doing?
You're not inspired? Great, don't ruin it for others.
@@entdmII then why are all the black WNBA players pissed off that Caitlin Clark is inspiring tons of little girls? Are minorities the only ones who can inspire people who are like themselves? I'm sure little white girls and black girls are inspired by her, but even if it was more white girls I've never heard people pissed off when someone like Coco Gauf or Angel Reese brag about being a role model for little black girls!!!
🦆💨
Jesus, I'm not white but I don't talk about my race. I JUST RIDE MY DAMN BIKE!
You're missing the point entirely. This story was about awareness. Let others who aren't you get inspired and dabble in the sport. In these comments alone, you can see many who got on a bike being at least partially inspired by the guy in this story years ago.
