I'm glad I opted for the tier with the players guide, that think looks AMAZING! I really hope we get a physical release on consoles soon, at the very least Switch.
Thank you for covering this. When my mother bought a Macintosh 128K in '89, we picked out two games for it. She chose Tetris and I chose Shadowgate (that box cover set my childhood brain on fire). As a result, I spent so many, MANY hours exploring the depths of the castle. Shadowgate (and the entire MacVenture series, really) has always held a special place in my heart as a result. I will absolutely pick this up and I'm really curious to try Grahfmetal's other adventure games!
Man, I've been waiting for this. The original NES Shadowgate was a favorite of mine that I never outright owned myself, but used to go over my best friend's house to play regularly back when I was around 9 years old. The music was/is so amazing, some of the best on NES, and it brings back incredibly vivid, nostalgic memories for me. I hear you about the torches too. I used to do the same thing and just stop using continue entirely, even restarting completely quite often. Excessive, but I was determined to make my way through in one run. After a (very long) time of trying and dying, both my friend and I managed to memorize the game from start to finish. It was amazing to me that a game that took us like a year or more to meander our way through with such periodic play was fully beatable in a manner of mere minutes once you knew what to do. So glad to have the chance to play the sequel now as the genre was so unique. Even with such minimalist graphics and all of the reading, these worlds were some of the most alive feeling essentially open-world games at the time. Like a good book come to life in a way and they still hold up to this day. Anyways, sorry for the ramble. Thanks for the video! o7
Nice! Soon as I have From Beyond 2 wrapped up I'll be sure to send you a copy :D It's been 5 years now since I release Prologue... Been a hell of a ride. Its great other people/groups are still making these. :)
Great review! I backed this game once i 1st heard about it. Absolutely loved the original. Shadowgate has one of the best soundtracks and the new one just hits it perfect on every level. Music, graphics.
I've never played an adventure game like this but it looks like it'd be so nostalgic for original fans to play a sequel after 35! years! I'm glad this exists
This sounds like it’s doing exactly what I’ve always thought the adventure game genre needs to come alive again. Having a strategy guide along with the game is brilliant and ensures that everyone can get exactly the level of assistance they need to beat the game.
I completely forgot you were the one who put me onto this new sequel and brought awareness to the Kickstarter so it's quite pleasing that the campaign was successful and things have come full circle to it's debut release. I added it to my Steam Wishlist and what a gorgeous strategy guide. So much love and care went into this that I can't stop smiling. 😃
So after the castle was pacified they turned it into a magic school for a bit. It got abandoned at some point then became a bandit lair. But they couldn’t get into the towers. I played the NES one back in the day but 64 was always my favorite.

It is thanks to your videos about the MacVenture series that found about Shadowgate. I am currently playing through Shadowgate Classic on GBC and I plan on playing through Shadowgate and this game online with a buddy of mine.
This definitely feels more like a true sequel than the Turbografx CD game ever did. The hero being a descendent of the hero from the first game seems very cliché, whereas a fenling with a thieving background is not someone you'd expect to save the kingdom. This NES inspired Shadowgate does retain a few elements from the Turbografx game, such as setting fire to the straw in your cell, the minotaur, and the evil changeling, but this is where the similarities end and you're off on a whole new adventure with the surprising crossovers for Deja Vu and Uninvited. I like how it seems as if the Fenling triggered certain events in those other Macadventure games when he briefly went into them. One of the endings implies another sequel is to come, but I wouldn't hold my breath for another Shadowgate game.
I was excited to see this video, not because of shadowgate but because i like your takes. I hope your family is doing well and when you post we will be here for you
''Been waiting 35 years for this sequel'' Me too, and man do I feel old all of a sudden. lol I also pitched in on kickstarter and I recommend if you're old fans like us to get the deluxe edition it has so many neat nostalgic additions that make it worth it such as their PDF guide being called ''Shadow Power'' as you said. I was happy to see this morning when I woke up that Beyond Shadow gate had gone up for sale on Steam even better when later on I got the notification of this video going live
MacVenture games are really nostalgic to me as well, played them n PC waaay back in the 90s for the first time. It's a shame we didn't get more Japanese examples of the genre, like Princess Tomato, since they had 'a lot' of games like that back then. I would've definitely eaten them up in my youth, hahah. Great to see an old series like that make a comeback!
Definitely gonna pick it up (GOG because DRM is not cool). I am hoping that since some of the people who worked on the game are viewing these comments that perhaps they'll see mine. Zojoi aimed to raise $20,000 but ended up raising over $120,000, adding many more extras than they had anticipated. That's my guess as to part of the reason it took much longer than originally expected.
Finally on sale, huh? Guess I'll have to buy that which has been on the GOG wishlist for a year or so. You'll probably have a livestream before I actually get around to pushing that buy now button.
FWIW because the Kickstarter did so well, they ended up adding WAY more content than originally planned which is why it took so long to come out. Just found that out today. :)
I want this so bad, but I never actually played much shadowgate as a kid. I couldn’t figure it out and it freaked me out! 😂 I think I’d love this now tho. Guess I need to play shadowgate first…?
Probably better to play the og game first if possible. Either on NES (or emulator lol) or they released Shadowgate Classic on GBC which is basically the same game. The original game is tough but much smaller in scope so may not seem as daunting.
@@FridayNightArcade I forgot about the Game Boy Color one--I actually had that and never beat it! Is the remake on Steam any good? I didn't realize, but I also have the Macventure Shadowgate on Steam.
The torch glitch did not occur for me. I played the living shit outta that game. As recently as 6 months ago. I also defeated RTK III in the same week.
As soon as I finish my current game I'm streaming, I'm heavily leaning to do this next. I am curious if I can figure it out all the way through without a guide. I couldn't figure out Shadowgate at 5 years old, but maybe I can figure out the sequel 30 years later lol
@@johnmp3828 A little bit... I've gotten them into some Atari games. They really like messing around on Combat since you're just kinda playing against each other and not the computer. And they really like RC Pro Am and Paperboy on NES. Surprisingly Top Gun as well - mostly because it's basically a rail shooter and the first level is just practice so it's super easy and they don't die in the first 30 seconds lol. They're only 4 so it's tough finding games that don't immediately obliterate them.
That's a fair point about the name as it is a little confusing, but technically it was the devs of the TG16 version that "borrowed" the name off of Marsh's original sequel script after ICOM Simulations got bought out. It was always going to be called Beyond Shadowgate.
There was an official remake with modernized graphics that came out in 2014 (and was subsequently re-released on other consoles in the years since). It's pretty cool in its own right although not a sequel.
5:10 Why do you reload after dying? Just keep playing man. 7:25 There is a timer ticking down in those situations. I never really finish games twice. This one I finished multiple times in a row. Best game of the past 5 years.
It didn't come out on time? You mean like many other projects there were delays? Yeah as long as it actually comes out within a reasonable time frame, I'm not too put out by a delay.
The main reason I haven't already bought the game is because they made a error with the geometry. All of the artwork was calculated to fit graphics with perfectly square pixels. Unfortunately, you only get perfectly square pixels in emulators, and then only if you aren't aware or don't care about the true geometry of the NES's video output. I assume the devs based everything visual on a bog standard emulator output without any correction. I pointed this out to them years ago but I see it didn't make an impact. Menus are affected by this as well.
Interesting... guess a fella is just gonna have to play this on a PC with composite output and hook it directly into an old CRT to play it properly. I'm totally not gonna do that. I'm really not. (i might)
@@FridayNightArcade I think if they could be convinced to offer a stretched mode so the gameplay matches the NES original, it wouldn't be _too_ bad of a compromise. The NES has 8:7 pixels so they'd have to do a ~14% horizontal stretch. As I noted before, all the newly-developed graphics assumed square pixels so this stretching would have consequences for actual squares and circles (and creature proportions) in the artwork, but it might turn out to be subtle.
@@Asterra2 So basically like if you're playing on an emulator and run it in 4:3 mode instead of 8:7 mode. Kinda how if you play Mortal Kombat on an SNES emulator and if you have it in 8:7 mode the logo is an oval instead of perfectly round. Yeah okay, I get what you're saying. I'll be totally honest, I hadn't actually thought about that (but had been thinking what it would look like as a gas to hook it up to a CRT for poops and giggles). I dunno, as I was playing on my PC it didn't bother me but I do get what you're saying.
@@GrahfMetalGames My misunderstanding, then. I felt pretty confident, given that the entire presentation, at a glance, was ripped directly from the NES game, that it was quite _specifically_ seeking to appeal to the audience who played the original. I'm not surprised you didn't hear the request as I made it in the talkback of one of the earlier videos about the project, but it's really not my job. The look of the graphics is what people who have only used emulators without geometry correction would be most familiar with, so there _is_ an argument to be made in favor of it.
Can anyone confirm if this is coming to consoles (specifically Switch). I saw some posts claiming it’s coming to “other places” soon, but couldn’t find anything concrete.
I'm confused. There was the 1993 TurboGrafx CD version of this game with the same name. Are they related?? How was the CD version allowed to do this? Or better question, why is this being called "Beyond Shadowgate" considering there was already a release of that name.
Yes and no. Different developers used the IP and portions of Marsh's script to make a "sequel" and sold it that way but it wasn't what the original developers intended, also had an entirely different interface. It'd be like if some other random author besides Tolkien made a sequel to Lord of the Rings.... oh wait lol ..
@@FridayNightArcade ah got it. Thx! In case you care I'm very interested in this sequel also. I was one of the few who finished the original shadowgate on NES.
We may be the only two that finished it 😂 FWIW I'm not knocking the TG16 sequel in any way. From what I've seen of it, it's its own thing and kinda cool in its own right. Just wasn't the 8-bit Shadowgate sequel I really wanted.
Im gonna blow your mind right now. There was also a 4th game made by Kemco called Rescue The Embassy Mission. But more of a room to room military strategy game. Still cool though.
This is a cool game, however there was already a sequel called Beyond Shadowgate for the Turbo Duo and it kicked ass. I guess you could argue that they changed the format, but then you'd just be splitting hairs
The other sequels are discussed at 15:15 - the TG16 Beyond Shadowgate was made by completely different developers and not the original intended game. They "borrowed" portions of Dave Marsh's original script but made it into something completely different and he wasn't involved at all.
I wonder why they named this Beyond Shadowgate when there was a different TG-16 Shadowgate sequel also called Beyond Shadowgate released more then thirty years ago? I remember skipping the Kickstarter because I liked the TG-16 game but money is tight enough I didn't feel like funding a remaster. when I could just wait until I have more extra kmoney or its on sale.
@@FridayNightArcade Its closer to 16:11 but my first watch I stopped when they were talking about the 64 game. And IMO using the exact same title for two very different games in a franchise is never a good idea. I don't see anyway it can actually benefit a game while it can trick people who would be interested in both games into only getting one because they think the two games are just different ports or remasters of a single game.
ICOM Simulations was bought out by another company in the 90s. They used the Shadowgate IP and produced a "sequel" for TG16, but none of the original creators including Dave Marsh were involved. They also borrowed a few bits from Dave's original script including the Beyond Shadowgate name. However, the game was not at all close to what the original creators intended. Beyond Shadowgate 2024 is the real 8-bit style sequel Dave Marsh and a few of the other creators intended to make and it's based off Dave's original script he wrote 30+ years ago including it's original name, "Beyond Shadowgate." Hope this helps.

I'd like to play this for sure, and the remake by Abstraction Games, that came out in 2019.
I also need to get around to finishing Shadowgate 64.
Hi! I hope you and your family are doing well!
Thank you for the kind words - we're all good. Hope the same for you and yours!
Are they gamers yet?
@@johnmp3828 A little bit... I've gotten them into some Atari games. They really like messing around on Combat since you're just kinda playing against each other and not the computer. And they really like RC Pro Am and Paperboy on NES. Surprisingly Top Gun as well - mostly because it's basically a rail shooter and the first level is just practice so it's super easy and they don't die in the first 30 seconds lol. They're only 4 so it's tough finding games that don't immediately obliterate them.
Omg they’re four????? Seems like yesterday you announced they were imminent
The days are long but the years are short...
Don't drink and drive!
I'm so happy I could SUPLEX A RANDOM JABRONI MAKE THEM HUMBLE lol loved these as a kid.
Glad to have you back, Sheik lol
@@FridayNightArcade oh MAN that hurt so bad when he passed away!
For sure
Can they fit it on a snes or n64 cart then? Ps1, 2 or whatever disc? Give us Physical!
The Kickstarter did have a tier with a physical cartridge but unfortunately it was for display purposes only and not functional. Looked sweet though!
@@FridayNightArcade Thanks for the knowledge, never know maybe enough seen just how gold a game is when in the phlesh (physical plastique ( : %)
But it's not Friday! Or 5 years later since the last video! WHAT THE HECK!? CATS AND DOGS!
This guy 🤣
Who is the composer for this? I can't imagine a new NES-style MacVenture game without Hiroyuki Masuno.
Different guy but still sounds pretty good.
Orie Falconer
I hope your next game is UFO 50.
This game looks so awesome. I'm still annoyed that they used the same name as the Turbografx game though. It makes things unnecessarily confusing.
That's a fair point about the name as it is a little confusing, but technically it was the devs of the TG16 version that "borrowed" the name off of Marsh's original sequel script after ICOM Simulations got bought out. It was always going to be called Beyond Shadowgate.
Do you know anything about the 2019 one Simply called Shadowgate? From what I saw it was a remake of the original
A new FNA video! It is a great day!
I know you said it’s better on pc, but I only have an old laptop these days. Wonder if there’s a console release planned?
Fwiw this game could probably run on any old laptop with Steam or GOG. ....not graphics intensive at all.
I've not heard that - just Steam and GOG for now.
@@FridayNightArcade Thank you! 👍
FWIW this game is not at all graphics intensive so if you've got like an old laptop sitting in the back of the closet it would probably run on it lol.
We may be the only two that finished it 😂
FWIW I'm not knocking the TG16 sequel in any way. From what I've seen of it, it's its own thing and kinda cool in its own right. Just wasn't the 8-bit Shadowgate sequel I really wanted.
SHADOWGATE ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
When can we expect the Let's Play series of this game? :)
Soon™ lol
Looking forward to it
Will this be on playstation store any time soon
pretty sure we're going to need a separate video of all your deaths with accompanying anguished cries of despair/subsequent laughter from FNA :-)
bahahah ... definitely will be live streaming this in the not too distant future.

Im gonna blow your mind right now. There was also a 4th game made by Kemco called Rescue The Embassy Mission. But more of a room to room military strategy game. Still cool though.
13:25
You didn't blow his mind.
I like your videos
When does this come out?
Last week :)
15:15 explains this
@@FridayNightArcade Its closer to 16:11 but my first watch I stopped when they were talking about the 64 game.
Beyond Shadowgate 2024 is the real 8-bit style sequel Dave Marsh and a few of the other creators intended to make and it's based off Dave's original script he wrote 30+ years ago including it's original name, "Beyond Shadowgate."
Hope this helps.
Um, didn’t Beyond Shadowgate come out for the TurboGraffx CD in 1993?
🧐🤨
