As the batteries are consumables and owned by NIO, customers can choose the capacity to lease and get replaced with a fully charged one at a swaping station. Once a battery capacity gets below certain threshold, NIO claims it'll be decommissioned from swaping stations to be used in energy storage facilities or their mobile charging unit recycle. @@pattrickmerete I'm not sure about H+ cars. The fact that there's no mass production hydrogen powered car seems to indicate that it's uneconomical. But it sure does seem intriguing that H2O comes out of the tailpipe🚗💦
      I personally don't think humanity will ever fully make it past petrol powered cars.🛢
      What I think is more likely to happen is that we can economically fix CO2 from the air and turn it into gasoline.
      Bill Gates is invested in a Vancouver based company that can compete with current gas prices. They figured out how to do what plants do. But instead of turning CO2 into carbohydrates, they turn it into hydrocarbons.
      That way all the gas station infrastructure doesn't have to be destroyed and we cut our petrol CO2 emissions by 80%
      Mix that with hybrid cars and we can virtually go on indefinitely with a high standard of mobility.

    This would be a great idea if battery packs were plentiful, but they are often the limiting factor in producing more electric vehicles. Every battery pack sitting idle outside of a car would definitely be more valuable inside of a car that isn't capable of swapping. This could change in the future, but not anytime soon.

    • @kashe747

      You don't need plentiful battery packs, because you can reuse and charge batteries and serve it to the next customer, so effectively you would have the same amount of batteries available, as like dedicated batteries in every EV, but now you just swap it for use on different cars.

    In the original concept the battery swap mechanism travels underground, so no lifting is needed, also there are two trolleys - one takes the old battery and the other is already waiting to put the new battery in. The process is faster than fueling a ICE car. I have no idea why were the designers of this system smart enough to make this work, but dumb enough to leave it at such under cooked state. What you see here is a fail in comparison of what they could have demonstrated. I don't understand why people move in such small steps. I was kid when I saw the battery change concept. The person who drew it is probably dead by now. We had the technology to build that system back then. We have it now, and yet I might never see one working IRL while I am alive.

  • @MrRedsjack
    @MrRedsjack 2 года назад +3

    While this system was already considered by other manufacturers the main issue is that with prolonged use it is hard to keep the connectors waterproof and many users if they have a new vehicle might not be happy to swap their new battery with a substantially more used one that could have lost some range already. Also the storage facility storing many dozens of massive batteries if subject to fire has enough lithium in it to go off like a large bomb making it more dangerous than a gas station and most people would not want it near their homes. Also it only works for one brand and one type of batteries and requires full time employees to stand by as if there is something stuck in the mechanism (like gravel dropped by the previous car or under the car where the removal mechanism connects with the car (like some dry mud) than the worker has to clean that manually or unstuck it. So it's extremely specific and only viable in an area where a single electric car brand is extremely popular and needs to be quite far from other buildings for safety and requires at least 3 employees on 8h shift to operate 24/7. You would need a massive amount of cars willing to change batteries to make it economically viable in any country where workers are expensive.

Die in / out from either side of the press thus reducing die change time by half. Same could be done with battery swap. This could reduce swapping time to about 2 minutes plus double the capacity of batteries available at each unit. It does make the unit larger but in areas where space is available, and more companies coming on board to use, it'd be a boon to using swap stations.
