@@markbrix9385 no the song is about king louis XVI who was king under the french revolution, The lyrics are his lost final speech that he held before he wad executed but no one could hear it because the crowd was screaming and shouting
That painting Chris Martin is carrying around, the cover art for their album, was created by Eugene Delacroix in 1830, depicting Lady Liberty in living human form leading the people while waving the French flag. The Revolutionaries are portrayed as the heros. But the lyrics are loosely based on the lost final speech of King Louis XVI before he was executed. The speech is lost because his words were drowned out by the screams and boos and the drums of the hate-filled crowd. The lyrics somewhat humanize the king, it reminds us that we're all just human inside, no matter what our position or title is (just a puppet on a lonely string, oh who would ever want to be king?). The song is of regret, sorrow, apology, he knows he'll be damned to hell (I know St. Peter won't call my name) and acceptance of his fate. The name Viva la vida (Spanish for Long live life) came from a painting Chris saw by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. She suffered great physical pain, an injured spine, polio, yet here she was painting a big beautiful masterpiece, and as Chris stated in an interview, he loved the 'boldness' of it.

Be my mirror, my sword and shield

For some reason I can't explain
Once you're gone there was never
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

Was this filmed in Holland?
Yes, in the Hague
Mikaela Zimmermann the flags are typical dutch, can hebe our king? ;)
4everFinnick.CFBeautiful Bring back the king of Burgundy maybe? Surely ALL of the Bourgogne's sent dead... Oh wait the main branch all died off oh 500 years ago.
Yes, there is a small (toy) town set up in Hague, Netherlands. You can see it in the video.
Nope in The Netherlands ;)
They way the video is colored gives the feeling of the time period that this video was tackling
Amazing!
This is what I imagine England to be like. And this is such a perfect song. Couldn’t stand it when it first came out as it was on the radio so much, but I appreciate it now very much.
For a second because of the thumbnail I thought this live action fallen kingdom by Coldplay

Uma das melhores músicas do Coldplay e dos anos 2000. E o vídeo é uma bela homenagem ao Depeche Mode.
Depeche mode are gods

He really has that look of a king though 👑
Great Song - makes me think what could have been
This is my favourite song of all time, this on repeat 🔂
8 years later and this song is still a banger🔥🔥
I love how they teased "Voilet hill" (their next single) in the end.
BRILLIANT
