I am in total agreement with the previous comments...saw this guy with the rest of the band and it totally covers up the beauty he puts into his vocals and the simple, sweetness of his guitar.
Saw this comment before the video loaded and was like, "Ah, man. Come on. I'm sure it's not like that." Report: it is exactly like that. Still a wonderful song and great performance, though.
John played at my church before he started the Lonely Forest, it was awesome. It's impossible to find any of the songs he did while he was solo though.
I saw them in their hometown (at Brodniac Hall) just before they took off to Los Angeles a few months ago. I was standing in the front, and the singer (I don't know his name) was spazzing out and knocked over his keyboard. I was almost hit with the mike-stand that was behind it. It was a really awesome show.
saw them way way way back when at a place called common ground that use to have shows, they had just started but were awesome!! its awesome to know they come from the next town over!!!
Not sure if anyone notices this but, Washington State has been exploding with music and talent since like 2007, especially out of Seattle. I'm a Washitonian and proud!
this is incredible, i enjoyed watching this very much. but i think that your solo stuff is better then what you play with the band. thank you again for this! i'm very much looking forward to some new songs!
Nice song! New dicoveries... Someone told me this morning that all i need to do is breath and stop for a minute.. all i can say to that person "In Time the trees die and light will fade. But I hope for a new breath, a new life to take me away. This version is awesome!
John is a GREAT guy i actually had the chance to run monitors for him at the Skagit County Fair (not picky at ALL) The power on stage is 5 time greater than off :) it has become my favorite live experience and i'm fairly certain it will stay so! I'm SUPER excited for they're album coming out soon cause it's with Walla of DEATH CAB! they're gonna make it big and they DESERVE it and Brayden is the sickest drummer EVER!...that's all haha
Johnny! Actually R.Walrus, you can find solo stuff on eMusic. I played a couple of shows with Mr. Van Deuesen back in the day & it's so awesome to see the band getting all this acclaim.
@xLnHxBlo0dLusT Not sure if you noticed but great talent has been coming out of Washington for many years now. It didn't just begin in 2007. The 90s have brought a lot of great bands out of Washington.
I remember learning this song on the guitar so many years back. much love❤
Still listening in 2023. Better than the album version by 10x
is it just me or do you LOVE the scream at the end
It’s the best part of the song
Only reason I listen
Still gives me goosebumps
Please put this version on spotify and we will listen to it endlessly
My absolute FAVORITE performance of his still, after all this time. Absolutely brilliant, I love every single second of this beauty.

Saw them tonight for the 2nd time. Absolute gentlemen and an honor to watch. Underrated talent.
This song is by far my favorite, and this performance! Wow. My ears get excited when I retype it in to RUclips. Lol
This is amazing! The tune, the guitar playing, the voice = a match made in heaven.
I am in total agreement with the previous comments...saw this guy with the rest of the band and it totally covers up the beauty he puts into his vocals and the simple, sweetness of his guitar.
Except for that, it is fantastic, and unbelievable that only five thousand has seen this. beautiful :)
Great Job, Donnie Darko.
all I feel every time I see this
Jake Gyllenhaal in his early, more musical years

Holy fuck, chill ass song and then he blows the fuck up near the end. Love this stuff!
This song is way too good, evert version is better than the last. I love this band
solid. just solid.
@bonzai348 Love your sound solo. Would buy an album with just your accoustic and vocals. Beautiful sound.
@Jackathan818 Chris Walla just signed them to his label a couple months ago.
@damoniss amazing!
love this song, have the same capo haha
this is way better than the actual version
This performance gives me fucking goosebumps every damn time!
@SuitKase253 The first show, or close to it, he played was in my backyard. back when he was in Last man Standing! haha. He has come a long way.
Basically an Americanized version of The Tallest Man on Earth, and its badass!
John Van Deusen is awesome!
now, the question is how to get this band to do shows in Seattle more frequently.
i geeked at the scream
@CheckenBake its about 5 chords with a capo on the 5th fret thats about it
this guy is pretty good.
i've posted this one before. it's a terrific song...
@DeannaStarr43 I knew that. I was saying that Brodniac Hall was the venue.
dude, you seriously need to release this recording as an mp3. i'm tired of having to play the video to listen to this!
the scream scared the living shit out of me!
So much better live.

2:43
@germaniumbass Thanks buddy!
so much better than the album version
@bonzai348 They are so good live altogether, I just think they need to be produced differently. John could do a sick solo album acoustic though!
@keyann86 what are you talkin about that was sick
