I lived on Maui from 1975-79 and surfed the bay on many days just like this. The crowds were much smaller back then and the pros from the north shore would come over for a swell like this. Now they go to Jaws.
Beautiful waves, but glad I got it from 82’ to 93’ and rarely saw half that many surfers. I once rode a wave from outside coconuts to the very end of kieki bowls on a NNE swell, kind of mushy but few get that long of a ride there.
I use to sleep in my car with my board inside right above the cave when I was a teenager circa '75-79. Maui was still pristine back then and it was rarely too crowded like today.
It’s ok one of the sharks buddy’s snitched on him he’s in the county waiting on his trial as we speak.. he’ll probably take a plea deal.. localism crazy around there

I couldn’t imagine what that was like back in the 90’s. I’ve spoke to guys who surfed it late 60’s by themselves. Must’ve been so cool!

Thanks! Yeah, it was the first time flying it with waves that big and surfers in the mix. Just didn't want to crash it.
I guess crowds make you feel safe... Only a month ago a guy lost his life in a shark attack right there...
