This, and other TJB videos on RUclips, made me realize how much I miss their being in mainstream entertainment today. Herb has to be one of the most brilliant musicians and arrangers ever to be in the industry. Few people can come close to him. He is a real "Class Act."
Most people don't know how talented an arranger Alpert was, given his limited piano experience. I remember in the 60's when I was back in high school, he would arrange many of his individual pop hits for marching/pep bands at football/basketball games. They were professionally published. Just another source of income for A&M records.
It's quite obvious they are not playing on stage. Where's the cello anyway? But you got to give them credit for making it look good. For me, it just exciting to see the actual musicians live, and see a bit of their mannerism. Too bad I was too young, only 12, when this special came on, and the only TJB fan in my family. So I never saw them live, but I got all the records, and played them most days, and often fell asleep to them.
I also failed to mention that the Electric Guitar and Bass were not connected to anything. Wireless gear I do not think existed back then. At least not at this level.
Great arrangement. Herb covered several Beatles songs and always came up with interesting ways to interpret them. I have to put in my two bits re. the miming to playbacks. TV sound quality in the 60s was way below the standard of recording technology. The best way to promote your record on a TV variety show was to mime to it, essentially just like in a video (no one complains about that). Ever seen the clip of the Doors playing live on Ed Sullivan? Too much echo and terrible sound quality.
I have always enjoyed TJB since I been a kid. Now 45 years of age I am so glad I never attended their concerts. They are pretending to play. Just look at the pianist when he strikes a note. Non of the keys ever goes down when her strikes a white or black key, how fake!!! Not to mention the drummer also. He's hitting the corner of the snare with one stick and the other stick is barely hitting the other stick!!! How fake...I still like their music tho...just not the tactics.
