  • It may look like an America’s Cup boat, but this is the first of what could be the next generation of inshore/offshore foiling machines. Designed for racing in offshore and coastal races in the Mediterranean ‘Flying Nikka’ is no pipe dream - she’s already in build for a private owner and due to be launched Spring 2022. We talk to her designer Mark Mills.
    Plus, how many is too many aboard an IMOCA60? Having raced fully crewed aboard Offshore Team Germany and won the IMOCA60 class in The Ocean Race Europe, Olympic and round the world sailor Annie Lush explains.
    We take a look at the Round the Island Race as well as looking back at what happened in the third and final offshore leg of The Ocean Race Europe.
    Plus, the link between superyachts and McDonalds and plenty more in Docktalk.

    over six months ago I predicted that someone somewhere is building an offshore foiling monohull that will break records in a way we can't conceive right now. The last new supermaxi offshore record smasher was Comanche and that was a good few years ago now. I doubt anyone has lost interest in breaking records like the trans Atlantic, S-H or Jules Verne so it seems odd that no one has launched a new 'record breaker' for a while. its been my suspicion for a while that there a number of big offshore foiling monohulls being built in top secret around the world and this is just the first to be revealed. very exciting and im sure more to come. great episode. thanks for keeping the adverts a little more tolerable.

    Maybe if you replace those outboard foils with wings, you could eliminate all hydrodynamic drag. It might be a bit unstable, but you could implement a computer-controlled robotic crew that would apply tuning tweeks every microsecond. To stay within the rules, you could power the computer as well as the hydraulics from the pedestals. Larry Ellison already has this in build (so I hear) because if you can't win while sailing, just redefine your terms. He was considering buying a supertanker with a flat bow to push a wave in the direction that his boat needs to go, so it could always be surfing, but he couldn't find a supertanker that did 45 knots.

    Who would have guessed that the 21st century was going to be such a huge leap forward for sailing. Everything from foiling cup boats to kite hydrofoiling to wing foiling. Every year or so there is some new innovation that upsets the apple cart.

    Great insight into the foiling yacht and I love analogy with windsurfing and also with younger sailors, it's spot on.

    During AC 36 renowned american sailor Ken Read was asked how much of monohull foiling technology would trickle down to other forms of sailing. Ken said it would be a lot more than you would think and this is playing out now with yachts like Flying Nikka and another larger one under design. We have a fascinating few years ahead to see where this technology extends as it is alloyed with AI and advanced automation .

    I am looking forward to seeing this technology make it into a cruising design with automated controls for stability. I would love to see how it would work in the open ocean (transatlantic or transpacific.

    Fantastic and informative episode on foiling developments. Thank you! I for one, who has always been somewhat of a traditionalist that loves the gaffers, Pilot Cutters, Fifes and the like, am all for the further evolution of all things sailing. It would be fantastic to see the commercial application of foiling technology to affordable recreational cruising blue water boats! I wonder what those designs would look like...

    What they often DON'T tell you is how often foils break in rough seas and how catastrophic foil failures can be, offshore racing is a dangerous and risky-as-hell sport. It's basically the Grand Prix of sailing, these boats definitely are not your dad's cruiser and this sport is definitely not for the faint of heart.

    • @pecopeco5907
      @pecopeco5907 Год назад

      damn, been waiting for a foiling cruiser. in my next life maybe.

  • @michaelcramerichliebemeinl5150

    with the constant lurking danger of nosediving while foiling I wonder if it would make sense to reduce that risk considerably by having two smaler set of foils. Like one pair in the front and one pair aft. Or like a smaller pair in the front and a slightly bigger one somewhere in the back of the boat. I wonder if someone has ever thought about trying this or maybe even had some models to scale with this configuration? Would be great to get an answer to that! Because at least to me that seems to be the obvious solution to this constant threat of nosediving !

  • @strode66

    Hello, I was wondering if the boat might create propulsion by raising and lowering a front and back hydro foil as seen with people riding hydro foil boards. I’ve seen the pump the board so to speak jumping weight up and down which propelled the board . A computer could work out how much and what movements are needed and just go to work with hydraulics , do you think this idea could work??ps also a foil pivot motion could produce forward motion!

  • @strode66
    @strode66 3 года назад

    A para-kite as well as swivel and pump foils could give a lot of otherwise wasted propulsion 🤔ps just had another invention thought , could some of the wind coming off the sail be directed through a set of tubes and down to a under water propulsion device whether through the foils or out of the keel or if allowed have the air forced into a jet prop .?

    I wish AC had stuck to the wingmasts instead of the foiling. Perhaps less spectacular but certainly more promising for cruisers than the extremely fragile underwater foils.

    When the question is asked what perfomance (that's the most stupid word I know for speed) to expect, all we hear is a number! But... what the jizz are the units this dork Mills is thinking about? Mach 40?!

  • @ek-ym6yy
    @ek-ym6yy 2 года назад

    It has always baffled me that these cup boats require the crews to become soaked all the time. A tad more construction would be safer and allow crew to concentrate better on their jobs and that would offset any speed or acceleration costs. Even the added weight of the extra onboard must have an effect to slow the boat.

    The problem I have with this is that, to me, these things are not really boats. That's probably because I'm old and, even as an ex yacht designer of sorts, can't make the transition to flying across the surface of the water on struts. I think we need another name for them. Not rude, I'm not being facetious. To me having foiling and non-foiling yachts in the same Vendee Globe was ridiculous, I think there should have been separate races. Ideally I would apply this to any yacht race.
