  • Simon Nicol founded British folk rock band Fairport Convention, along with Richard Thompson, Shaun Frater and Ashley Hutchings in 1967.
In 1969 Fairport Convention released Liege and Lief, voted 'the most influential folk album of all time' by Radio 2 listeners, and which is today considered key in the creation of the whole electric folk music genre. Nicol later worked with John Martyn on Solid Air (1973) and played guitar on Cat Stevens' Numbers (1975).
In recent years Nicol and the band has seen a great resurgence in popularity due in large part to the success of the Cropredry Festival, held annually near Oxford, England.

Simon is obviously a nice guy and a very grounded influence with his always solid rhythm guitar playing and strong vocals.

He's also a great lead player but doesn't really want to do that.

@@kennybluet5527 I know! I've seen some footage of him playing lead, he's more a player for the song though.

@@richalderson6069 after I saw your comment , a video of them playing " Dirty Linen" popped up on my phone. Think it was from about 2002 or thereabouts. Simon playing electric lead on it and doing an admirable job. Those are difficult licks! The lead players that have been in that group were absolutely phenomenal. Thompson, Allcock. Jerry Donahue ---- That guy was something else.

Approached him at the bar at cropredy 40th anniversary of leig and lief , my wife and me were go smacked by his sheer rudeness ! An autograph was all that we asked of him, .we complimented him on the band's fantastic performance ,but he was the most bolshie person we ever met !! Swarb and Peggy on the other hand certainly made up for it !! Simon, a personality transplant is in order !!

The late Somerset batsman Harold Gimblett once berated his opening partner for his reluctance to sign autographs, telling him that next time nobody might be interested enough in him to bother. A lesson still worth bearing in mind, especially when dealing with an obvious fan and not just one of the great unwashed.

I have met him and approached him, and all the other "famous" people I have met very carefully, and found them all to be good natured and pleasant. They are there to provide a service for which you pay, not be your best buddy or at your beck and call.

I thought it was about common courtesy but apparently it's about getting on the Christmas card list. Thanks for the education lesson.
