    Honestly, this movie was pure fan service. It didn’t really live up to the original but I thought it was very fun. You can tell that the actress were having a blast and that made my day. Also, I like the new focus on the sisters, they were always the best part of the original. It showed that they cared deeply for one another even tho they were evil. That was beautiful.

  • @runeguardian

    • @fingolfin897
      @fingolfin897 2 года назад +10

      I think if they make it a Trilogy, they'll make the witch from the beginning scene the new villain. They will probably have the new coven of witches bring back the Sanderson Sisters to help them, and it would be even more epic to have the original cast of Max, Dani, and Alison show up!

    • @runeguardian
      @runeguardian 2 года назад +4

      @@fingolfin897 Actually, I like the way you are thinking there. That sounds like a good plot. Evil in the first movie, softens to neutral in the 2nd movie, and then dabbles in being good for a change. And, that would be a great way to bring them all back in with a creative script that blows the mind. That would be fun. I still think they would do good to double-down on the "there are good witches, too" fact they started in the first movie. Which was clearly part of the plot in the 2nd. My imagination is going crazy cataloging all the ways the could take it. Sweet!

    • @fingolfin897
      @fingolfin897 2 года назад +3

      @@runeguardian yes!! I was thinking that too, and that maybe they need help from more good witches, which is where we see Alison/Danny (just one, maybe both) return as a good witch! I'd prefer Alison simply because we all know how much she was interested in the witches and was the one referred to as a White Witch. However, since this new Mother witch is dressed to resemble Danny I feel like she should somehow be included again.

    Unpopular opinion probably in your comments: but as someone who grew up on the first one, my expectations were met for this movie. It had all of the nostalgia of the first one, but in a more modern twist with this one. I loved all of the new characters, and the hijinks felt very similar to the first. Hannah Waddingham (Of Ted Lasso Fame/Musical Theatre who played the bird that transformed into The Mother Witch) was in the movie for less than five minute and she was my favorite part. Also, you’d think with having a powerhouse singer like Hannah, they’d give her at least one song; Nope, not even one, and I feel like that’s a crime. And if you saw at the end, The Mother Witch was following the girls! And some in the comments may not like this: but the post credit scene sets up a trilogy to happen. I hope we do get a third because TWO BFC’s…that’s trouble waiting to run Amuck.

    As a die-hard fan of the original, I absolutely loved the sequel. It was so much fun, campy & hilarious. The kid actors for the sisters absolutely stole the show, they were fantastic for the opening sequence & set the tone. Maybe if we get the oppertunity to revisit the franchise with a third we could get cameos/fan service roles from some of the other original cast members (Max, Dani & Allison), but just to have the witches back & billy it was more than enough, they were all fantastic. I love how the new age of "good" witches all mirrored the original sanderson trio too. It was witty, well-written & far surpassed my expectations (which I set pretty low knowing the history of the original film's success was a slow burn & that it'd be a Disney+ release). My watch party & I just went into it looking to have fun & that's exactly what we did. All of us loved it & left the film with even more love for the original & gratitude that even after 29 years we got to return to Salem. An extension; but a fresh take on a classic with lots of laughs. Loved the reaction guys!

But overall I thought it was a very fun film that knew exactly what it was doing. It wasn't taking itself too seriously and deliberately nodded to so many moments from the first. Another thought I forgot to share: In the original, Thackery Binx tells the teens never to use any of the spells in the book because the book is inherently evil. Even if you want to argue that the book being evil and given to the sisters by the devil is just hysteria from the puritans, all of the spells in the book shown in the original were to hex people and make them suffer or steal their lifeforce, etc. It's pretty hard to ignore that fact and act like it's totally cool for the teen witches to be using that book, unless they are only going to guard it to make sure no one else accesses it. I just think they were honestly trying to do a good thing by having some good witches in the movie, but mixing actual modern, benign, witchcraft practices with fictional evil witch stereotype magic is a juxtaposition that just does not work. A big part of why this movie did not work was because the writers and filmmakers couldn't seem to pick a lane. When it comes to camp, you kind of have to pick one style and one tone and commit to it. I felt like they did not incorporate these elements together well at all. Also, did the shopkeeper go grave-robbing to find the fat of a hanged man to make a new candle or what? They didn't even mention the morbid nature of the black flame candle in this one.

      That’s what I hate about the new main protagonists. In hocus pocus there is only witch craft. Magic doesn’t exist in hocus pocus. So there cannot be such a thing as it being ok to use spells from the book. And there can’t be such a thing as a good witch. If there is a third movie, I’m guessing they’ll make it that the book tricked them and the girl is the new villain.

    I loved it. I thought the kid that played young Winifred did a bang up job. My one real complaint is that in the original Mary Sanderson's crooked lower lip drooped on the OTHER side of her face. It was bit distracting. How'd did they miss a detail like that?

      I read an EW interview with Kathy Najimi recently that said she couldn't do the droop on that side of her face anymore- so at the beginning of their return when Winifred slaps her, it apparently moves the droop to the other side of her face to accommodate it.

    I was actually shocked I liked this movie as much as I did. I still greatly prefer the original, and I think this movie lacked the charm of it, but I still laughed A LOT more than I expected to. Although I really didn't like the opening, just because the writing and acting was...kinda cringe. Although props to the young actors playing the sisters, because they definitely got some of those mannerisms down! On the other hand, I really liked that focus on their closeness; that no matter how much Winifred wanted power, deep down she felt the power wasn't worth it if she didn't have the only people who ever cared for an accepted her.

    I think they are setting up a 3rd movie. I think the bird witch woman in the beginning who gave the spell book to the sandersons is going to be the big bad in the 3rd movie. And the 3 girls need the help from the sandersons to take her down. They set up her chracter for literally a few seconds? They gave her a back story. And there was a bird seen in the final scene of the movie following the three girls. I think she cast the forbidden spell and it took her coven which is why she said her coven is no more. Which is why she... seemed so worried/angry that someone else wanted to do the spell maybe she wanted to be the most powerful? Maybe she was worried to see the same fate happen to them? She also did say "salem will one day be ours" that seemed like a hint where she will attempt to take over Salem in the third movie.
    End credit also showed a 2nd black flame candle. Could that bring the sanderson sisters back? I really enjoyed the ending of this one. It was really warm hearted and fun. I do see how they could be possibly setting up for a redemption movie where the Sanderson Sisters are good guys (as disney loves to dp woth their villains). I wouldn't be suprised if they made it a trilogy as disney seems to like those💕 (descendants, High school musical, zombies).
    I think i liked this one more? It had a strong story. It tied in well with the orginal. It was camp and fun still in tune with the original. Plus i LOVED the drag queens Kornbread, Kamora Hall and Ginger Minj being dressed up in the look-a-like contest!! :D

    I'm a bit late to the comment party, but I think this is one of your best reactions. I agree that this movie really grabbed the fun aspects of the first movie, it had some very 90s aspects, but it turned a few things into a little modern-day, very tongue-in-cheek. I really liked the movie, I still loved the first but this was great. If I hadn't seen the first, this would still be a great, funny movie. I loved the younger kids, and the understanding of character, they nailed it, then seeing the witches almost 30 years later, nailing their roles! Actors talk about how hard it is to go into character after some time away, and I know this is fun, but they nailed it. I loved the music, and the plot, all of it was just fun. I felt for them in the end, and I think that speaks volumes, that although they are villains, you almost want them to live on lol. I love that you both thought the same way, the editing was great. I think you kept most of the key aspects in, I would have liked to see your reaction to the conversation between Cass's boyfriend realising that he hadn't been very nice to them. Thanks, guys!

    I thought this movie did a good job for being a sequal it has a lot of call backs to the original and yet has it's own twists and turns as well. I went to Salem years ago when I was younger I enjoyed it and even went into a magic shop there which was interesting. They have a museum that has a part where you feel like you are on trial for being a witch to see what it was like for the accused and also a ride that shows the history of Salem and what they did back then as well but again that was years ago so it might have changed since then.

    I loved the movie! I laughed throughout and teared up at the end. The Sanderson sisters were dark but they still loved each other. The doesn't excuse their actions but does explain how they got on that road.
    HP2 was a wonderful sequel and does a good set up for trilogy with the first witch coming back. Like others in the comments, I think she did use the spell and that was how she lost her coven and why she warned Winnie against doing that spell. I like the concept that the book can decide who to follow. Maybe in the 3rd movie she either tries to take the book back or to get the new trio to go to the dark side.
    About the salt, I was sure it worked in the first movie when Allison used it but the more I think about it, I don't think the sisters actually cast spells after she made the salt circle. Winnie said something like "salt, clever little witch" and they took the book and left. Now I'm wondering if either salt works for everyone of if Allison was a witch who was still coming into her powers.
    And I love that the roomba was actually part of the plot and not just a flying device. I laughed out loud when it came back at the scene 😄

    The movie wasn't bad, but after reading the book for I felt really disappointed. There was supposed to be a 4th sanderson sister (Elizabeth) and the witch in the woods was supposed to be the girl's mother. The power spell was meant to bring the mother back (she was very verbally and physically abusive to her daughters). Elizabeth rejected her mother and sisters ultimately sparing her from their original fate (I think Becca is one of her descendants), and Gilbert gets turned into a French bull dog. Elizabeth's ghost is what ends up guiding the girl's on their journey to save Salem. That to me would have been more compelling.
    Did anyone else notice the new trio of witches have the same color scheme as the original trio? Becca in green, Cassie in pinks/purples, and the other in at least 2 layers of varying plaids.
