I love Mahoraga's adaptation. He was throwing attacks (knees and punches) in anticipation of it getting cut off to hit Sakuna. Thats why Mahoraga was punching air, Sakuna was pump faking him by not cutting him. After a while, Mahoraga learned to fake out Sakuna and connect that uppercut. Sakuna was excited that he taught something like Mahoraga to "lie"

Sukuna needed that blond guy to stay alive so he could play with mahoraga for a bit, because if the other guy died the ritual would end and mahoraga would disappear. Once Sukuna had his fun the other guy wasn't needed anymore.

Megumi wasn't putting nobodies life in danger. If Sukuna didn't intervene Mahoraga would've just killed Megumi and Haruta and disappeared immediately after. Nobody else would've died.
Sukuna rescuing Haruta kept Mahoraga from disappearing and it also saved Megumi's life. Cause if Haruta dies, Megumi dies and Mahoraga disappears.

If blondie died, Megumi dies with him.
The ritual had Megumi and blondie as a team to take down Mahoraga and tame him (temporarily, as Megumi would have to do it alone for it to be permanent)
Then a third appeared to interrupt the ritual by killing Mahoraga.
No ritual = no death for Megumi.
