  • "If there's one guy associated with crazy double neck instruments, it's Mike Rutherford." Blazer, www.talkbass.com
Two Double Neck Guitar: “By the middle of the Trick of the Tail Tour, Mike switched from his Microfret bass/Rickenbacker 12 string double neck over to a custom 6 string bass and 12 string twin neck guitar by luthier Dick Knight."
    www.genesismuse...
"Mike Rutherford, 1976: I'm in the middle of changing over now. I use an older double-neck-with a bass and guitar, a Microfret - the company's out of business now. It's a great recording bass but not so good on stage - but recently I've had a new custom double-neck built. At the moment I'm attached to the old one so l can only write on that. I have to break the new one in - I can't write on and instrument that I don't know well.”
However, this custom instrument was also unstable on stage and was subsequently retired from live use.

Mike Rutherford (Tony Banks, too) - the most prominent music writers in Genesis. That was 50 yrs ago as well, in the 5 & 4 piece days. Yet Mike gets so criminally under mentioned in this band. I thank you for putting this compilation together!

It’s a pleasure. Thank you very much.
Talking about Mike Rutherford, I’m working on a new clip. It’s going to be about his 12 Acoustic String, but I still need to have a look to many different material, so I’ll probably post it next year.
"I was always trying to make things more complicated while the rest of the band members sometimes were like 'Nah.'" Tony Banks.
And still talking about Tony Banks, in October 7th, I’m going to post a lovely clip I’ve been working on: “Firth Of Fifth - Tony Banks in the Flute Solo”.
And here you’ve the Banks’ videos I’ve made and posted in my YT Channel:

Mike used 4 different double necks during this period, not just two. 1973-74: Rickenbacker double, 74-76: Rickenbacker/Microfret, 1976: custom, 1977-1981: Shergold modular (configured as 4/12 or 4/6). He had another one for the Mama tour and of course another on reunion tours.

From 1977, he used a Shergold Modulator

I'm not sure if this video shows the Rick/Microfret one. Does it? I'm trying to find a pic of it but only seeing the Rick 12/4 (seen in this video), the Dick Knight 6 bass/12, (also in this video), But what does the microfret doubleneck look like?

Toni, thank you for making a video of Mike!
Mike is a little plain, so few people take it away.

Mike is a beast, what a creative guy!, His riff compete Squire and i am sure that he is an inspiration to Geddy!

Ged definitely nicked the Taurus pedals and double neck from him.

I don't care what anyone thinks... with ot without Gabriel, Genesis was great while they still played Prog.
I saw Mike Rutherford with the Mechanics once and him solo with a backup band, and he is an amazing guitarist.

Ok…. The first double neck was a the double neck Rickenbacker…. Then it was the Microfret, for the Lamb tour

I guess he used the Ricky as 12 string bass combo...then I saw a 12 string 6 string combo plus his Shergold axes

It's great. But I think he should have continued doing this more inventive and creative stuff rather than becoming more of a mainstream bass player.
