- In 2017s Bathurst 1000, Scott McLaughlin obliterates the lap record and storms to ARMOR ALL Pole Position for the 2017 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 recording a 2.03.831
This jaw-dropping lap competes with fellow countryman, Greg Murphy's 'Lap of the Gods' in 2003. The 2017 pole winning lap across the Mountain has a special place in the modern history of Supercars.

Hello Supercars
We won't ever have racing like we use to.
Going America shitboxcars has killed Australia. I will never be going to see supercars again, its pathetic.
I can see already 2022 will be crap after this c-ov-id.ho-ax bullsh.
Supercars Only one word needed really. DANG.
Trooper Buddy -It's not a hoax ... unless you're cognitively and informationally challenged. Sorry, I didn't realise. Please continue.
Trooper Buddy Back to the original series now. Where yank shitboxes ruled at one point. Pommie cars came after that and before. Mini Cooper won at Bathurst. Hell even a skyline has won the series not even a V8.
“ Does that give him an invoice? Is there a price to pay for that one?!”
I love me some Aussie Motorsports commentary!!
Much love from the states!!
lamest shit i ever heard and im an aussie
Cringy AF Barry Sheene would be turning in his grave.
@@albertkelly7129 I thought it was funny. What do I know, I don't even drive lol
@@albertkelly7129 then you clearly either don't understand what an invoice is, or you have no sense of humor or appreciation for witty metaphors. That's your problem; the commentary is fantastic.
@@NipponNostalgicTV if one is turning in their grave because of color commentary, then the issue is with the one lying in the grave.
All respect to the legend, but there is a reason most sports have both a color commentator and a play by play commentator; both are important, and the color commentator appeals very much to those who aren't well versed in the sport they are watching from a technical aspect.
Used to race against him in karts, it was so frustrating sitting in behind him cause each lap he'd just keep pulling out another kart length or two, and ya couldn't do anything about it. Great to see him on the world stage now beating the best.
Oliver Pykett Nice :] 👍
Did he ever get beat?
Yeah, there were a couple of guys who were quicker. Mitchell Evans always used to dominate. But I think Scott has gone onto another level since his karting days haha.
Scott still races karts now, he races in the vintage series. I haven’t raced him yet but I have practiced with him
Feel pride in the fact that you witnessed history before your eyes, even if it was an annoying fucker to deal with xD
most underrated race cars in the whole of racing
Louie Lambretta rallycross?!
noonracer rallycross has a worldwide stage this is a nation thing
yeah i know right. its the simplicity of the cars i think. v8 + small downforce + similar cars across the grid = good racing
and people under-appreciate how hard these cars are to drive because you have to be so careful and perfect on the inputs while still doing alien lap times, racing wheel to wheel etc.. no traction control, 3 pedalled heavy beast, imo way cooler than GT3/GTE cars and the sound of the cars onboard is the best in all of motorsport rivalling that of F1 V10s and 1995 ferrari F412 T2
If I'm correct the supercar have sequential gearboxes and only need the clutch pedal when changing gears from 1-2 (and maybe 2-3)
This is some of the best driving I've ever seen. He drove the absolute _SHIT_ out of that car! Amazing.
You said it. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING !
Yeah it was amazing!😀👍✌
When the top 10 shootout for the Bathurst 1000 happens each year, you know you’re gonna get some fantastic driving.
you should watch some of Peter Brocks laps in the 70s & 80s if you think that was good...
gp75motorsports There were at least three tyre smoking moments across the top of the mountain. You don’t see that too often.
It's great to see your competitors excited about a faster lap.
That's respect
Aussies .....
I'm still getting chills. An iconic moment in motorsport
You probably get chills when a shiela looks your way.
Not really. In Australian motorsports maybe
Bathurst ‘03
@@bradsbeenthere2132 so how does Australian motorsport ever qualify as doing something amazing?
You think it'd be easy to drive these heavy fuckers at Bathurst.
Both McLaughlin’s and Murphy’s lap are fantastic and special in their own right.
Murphy’s lap was incredible because it was just so unexpected and took everyone by surprise, while McLaughlin’s lap is up there because it was so flamboyant and showboat like, and even with 2 wheels in the dirt, he just went faster and faster.
Respect both laps!
They're both equally iconic moments from different generations of V8 supercar, I think it's a good way to show how far the cars have improved over the time between the 2 laps. But at the same time they both show just how hard these guys go around this incredible track, they're both going balls to the wall and pushing their cars to the absolute limit. Gives me goosebumps watching them every time.
Best two laps of Bathurst ever
I agree that both laps were significant, but the kicker for me was the 1.1 second gap between Murph and 2nd position John Bowe. That was astonishing.
Show boat ?? Scotty Mac likes an edgy setup with minimal downforce .. His style sees more sharp reaction input to control the car at adhesion limit 👍👍
@@MrBenHaynescars were more even in Scottys case . He was the Factor .
Still cant believe he dipped 2 tires in the dirt and still managed that. Hats off to you my friend
Honestly might have helped him get a slightly more favourable exit speed on the next corner
@@boasyV2 yeah exactly it is a short run downhill so he gained a lot of time carrying more speed in the entry and lost a tad in the gravel because immediately after he is starting to slam on those anchors
And to think that this was 4 years ago. A 2:03 today is still an insanely fast lap
My God. All those sharp inclines and declines around narrow corners. This has to be the toughest circuit in all of motorsports! What a blinding lap!
That line "I dreamed of doing this since I was kid" makes me almost tear up. I was so happy for him.
I’m a Holden fan but I watch this lap all the time and get goosebumps watching this! Scotty is a legend
Check out the Peter Broke Lap in a VN Back in the day. Thats some exciting driving!
To be fair, I'm a Ford fan and can still watch Murphy's lap with chills as well.
If it wasn’t for Scotty and Penske.. Johnson would have went belly up a long time ago… Bowe left, then came the mechanics nightmare..radisich… that was the beginning of the near end of DJR
Still tear jerking when you can hear in his voice how much that meant to him. Brilliant lap Scotty. I’ll be watching this over and over again for years to come
I agree with you. The man has put so much into getting to that point in his life and he left it ALL on the mountain. It’s so inspiring seeing someone push so hard doing what they love... which also happens to be so badass.
Me too
And now McLaughlin has added a Supercars championship to his achievements. This man is exceptionally talented.
ive loved mclaughlin since he entered the sport. for some reason he was immediately my favorite driver, and this is just awesome. i would have loved to see him do this in the volvo though.
Same and I also would have loved to have seen a S60 do this time and also win the race but oh well good stuff.
He gained all the time in the Elbow. Plucked it in first, gave some jandal and FACK YEEEEEEHHHHH!
his second race he had the battle of a lifetime against Whincup, and it was for second
Fucking text book driving! Absolutely stellar car set-up too. Look at how well the car behaves over the top of the mountain!! That thing is hooked up!
Everything about that lap was insane. Gives me goosebumps every time I watch it.
Dylan Lester good speech crompton
Chris Wilkinson cheers babe
Dylan Lester nws sugartits
Cars today are improving generation to generation. Congrats for scott💯👌
Dylan Lester He was pushing that thing to it's absolute limit.
I remember watching the pole lap the following morning and showed my dad. We were both blown away. Now he's racing this weekend in the Corvette! One of my favourite drivers in the entire world
I'm not even there and I am so hyped up in my room. Just watching and you can see he's flying through the tracks. I need to see a race live one day. I love this series
Damn you Aussies... Why y'all gotta go make qualifying on a road course all "chub worthy"
My GOD I need to see Bathurst before I die.
When the Mountain calls...You must answer. Saw the track for the first time in the flesh and what a spectacle it is.
With the way things are going who knows how many more years we have V8 Supercars??
Best you book tickets SOON!
I have been once, it is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!!
It's a hill lol. Pikes peak is a mountain
True but you only get one pass at Pikes Peak. At Mount Panorama you have to complete 161 laps for a chance of wining the race.
Also the view from Skyline overlooking Conrod straight is amazing. Then on the flip side you can see the cars from The Chase enter Griffin's Bend as well as see cars going the other way through Reid Park in a multi level view. Freakin' amazing.
True....... mount panorama is an awesome track just funny its regarded as a mountain is all
I’ve watched this so many times and it’s still so exciting to watch.
Everything about this is perfect, the sounds, the camera angles, the commentary. Just perfect
Except for the engine, which was illegal
@@davepascoe6093 “allegedly”
@@davepascoe6093 No you fool that was 2019
Coming down the mountain at that speed literally just looks like a slow-motion crash. It's narrow, it's winding, they're going completely balls-out inches from the concrete, the suspension is unloading and reloading like crazy...I have tried driving Mount Panorama on iRacing and I can't do it. It's just insanity. My brain can't process the corners fast enough to keep up any speed. These guys are superhuman to be able to do that hundreds of times in a race week without completely "binning it" as you Aussies say. This American says hats off to Supercars drivers, y'all are amazing.
I can’t stop watching this lap. This is what drivers and fans live for. That feeling of being on max attack, knowing it’s all on the line and you need to deliver RIGHT NOW, no second chances. Brilliant.
I've watched this lap multiple times too. I love it.
I hardly ever watch this race. and honestly this is my favorite lap ever throughout all of motorsports. Thank you Scott McLaughlin for the best lap to ever accomplish!!!
Maan I was down on the final corner for this , and it still gives me goosebumps
This is an absolutely unbelievable lap. Words cannot describe it. He is absolutely on the limit or even over the limit at every single corner, this is a perfectly set up race car and McLaughlin gets every single morsel of speed and more out of it. Watching him fly down Brock's Skyline, that car is so far beyond the limit I can't even comprehend how he kept it off the walls let alone pulled a lap like that. Without doubt the greatest qualifying lap in motorsports history, a perfect 10 out of 10. This will never be equalled, let alone beaten.
New Zealanders setting iconic lap records around Bathurst. Incredible to watch
When I was at work, I took a rest and watch McLaughlin, my most favorite racer ever❤
It literally brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it!
Thankyou Dick, Thankyou Mr Penske and congrats Scotty!
Yeah, a team of CHEATS MATE !
@@davidjonesthanksto7262 this isn't the year that they cheated...
You can't not like him. He is a hard worker. He is humble, humorous, entertaining and real.
i love the camerawork! much better than a lot of f1 and it really shows the speed well
I found myself clapping after he passed the finish line and time was shown after beeing completely mindblown throughout whole run. What a crazy lap. It's moments like these why i love motorsport-pure,on the limit driving.Very, very impressive driving and crazy speed.
As a lifelong nascar fan this stuff is incredible.
Was bloody amazing to see this legend do this lap in person, going back to the mountain in 2019 again.
@Daryl Lonigan technically saw the 100% because of the big screens around the track
Going into Skyline he was a heartbeat from turning that car into a smudge on Brocky's wall. To think that in about 16 hours that car needed to be ready on the starting line for the race and he put it all on the line. What a drive!!
I have watched a grand total of maybe 10 minutes of v8 supercar racing, yet I remember being fortunate enough to be watching this live
I love the livery on that car. It's beautiful 😍
hashrulsubzero Yes very nice
Agreed.
Evil looking also!
Toll, Valvoline, Pepsi (Didnt last long XD), Vodafone, Supercheap, Mobile and 888 '17 redbull.
Yeah nice livery In nice car
hashrulsubzero A
2018 and i still come back o watch this. goosebumps like mad
The 15 or 20 second bit starting when he clips the sand trap and the moment he gets on the back straight is an absolute rollercoaster. The camera gets flung around like a rubber band. That lap was simply amazing
Even years later that dust still gets in my eyes.
Congrats on that IndyCar win Scotty!
Bathurst is one of the worlds best Motorsport tracks! I was in Zurich Christmas 2014 wearing a Castrol, Larry Perkins jacket because it was cold, very cold and was approached by a German DTM driver who had done a 12 hour at Bathurst a few years before. He asked me if I had been there, I said yes, 8 times, he shook my hand and said, SCARY TRACK, getting down was a relief, then you have to do it again!
Not a lot brings my emotions out and in the last 15 years I’ve never got emotional except when Scottie’s last sector lit up! I was out of my seat for the last sector and jumped up and down for 10 minuets after that lap. Well done Scottie!
That right there is what I call a driver. Absolutely incredible lap!!
Probably the most SATISFYING pole lap ever
La mejor categoría y la tan poco conocida. Era mi categoria preferida en el simulador TOCA3 y sobre todo Bathurst.
Im a great fan of scottie mac. His lap at mount panorama was insane. Also im cuban i live in USA. But after watching Murphys lap and win pole by a full second i think that is indeed the lap of the gods. But there is no shame scott u right there with him. I play forza and i love this track and it can be ur best friend or worst enemy
favorite track on Gran Turismo. I hope I’m able to ride on this track at least once in my life. 🙏🏻
Haven't seen the supercars since like '06. They're mindblowingly fast now. Absolutely incredible machines
Yup too fast for Ambrose lol
i keep watching this and 2 years later it still gives me goosebumps hopefully in 1 weeks time he will do it again
i still watch this 5 years on and im still cheering for Scotty.
And he just won his first Indycar race this last weekend!!
In the 25 years ive been going to Bathurst car races noone has ever lit the mountain up like he did with just one lap, will be talked about for years and something il never forget!
What about Matt Campbell's Bathurst 12h pole lap this year?
@@Maenfy a good lap in its own right but nothing in comparison to Scotty in the FGX Falcon and nowhere near the crowd at the october events. The pole sitter will always get the loudest roar from the crowd but this lap was different even the holden fans stood up and roared.
from 0:50 to 1:24 he was perfectly on the limit of the tyres. tyresmoke in every corner while sliding just perfect into the apex. this isnt only the best performance ever at bathurst. but one of the best performances of all racing worldwide
Such a beautiful track. I think this and late Rockingham are pinnacles of what technical tracks can be.
2 years on this still gives me goosebumps. Bring on the Mustang this year at The Mountain.
This lap is so exciting!!!!! I've always been very envious of V8 supercar racing down under! I mean we have some tracks in the UK and Europe, but Jesus Christ......the Bathurst track is truly epic!
When I'm back in Australia, I really want go go haha!
I think Bathurst only loses to Spa. And not by a lot.
Says a lot about the quality of the track, kind of a hidden gem still
This one lap had more excitement than the past 5 seasons of F1! Great, mean sounding engine, got the car sliding, dropping wheels into the dirt, tyres smoking under heavy load, launching across apexes on two wheels.... well played Scott, fucking well played!
Have to give it to the engineers here in Aussie, year after year they keep building fantastic race cars , and engines, great to watch and appreciate.
Holy shit! So insane how fast he was going, and how close he was getting to the walls.
This is easily one of the most difficult tracks to really be fast.
Hats off to this bossman.
He was driving the hell out of that thing..
I watch Murphs lap of the GODS ...and then watch this..I don;t care about manufactures ...Just glad im a KIWI...awesome...can just imagine young Scotty watching Murph and saying Im going to do that one day!!!
Ought to give props to the camera crew on that one. amazing how they can convey that type of speed. Absolutely amazing lap!
Can't believe it's been nearly 5 years since we saw this legendary lap
This is what makes the FG X XR8 memorable and the fact he won the championship for the first time the year after when it was the Falcons last year.
The BA, BF and FGX falcons were fords most successful modern eras I feel, on AND off the track… Lowndesy even admitted the FGX was a faster race car
Seeing this man get his first Indycar race recently, probably my favorite Kiwi driver now
JFC, dude was one with the car. Holy shit, that is literally driving on the edge. I cannot drive like this in a sim. Gigantic balls.
Taking up dirt at McPhillamy, getting on two wheels through esses, reaction of the engineer, commentating... eveything fits perfect together. one hell of a lap, one hell of a video.
A great way to say good-bye to the mighty FGX Ford Falcon..... so I bought one.
3 years later this is still the best video on youtube
number 17 will always be a top runner
I might be a Holden fan but i have massive respect for this lap congrats Scotty!!
The mighty Falcon is the true king of the mountain
He drives like a savage like Johnson used to, good fit for the shell car
I watch this and I HATE I’m stuck in the states I would give my left arm to come to the mountain and watch these cars and drivers
You can watch every Qualifying/Race,every round live anywhere OUTSIDE Australia Here: www.supercars.com/superview Your welcome!
One of the best laps you will see anywhere. Find myself watching this video quite often.
He clocked that ruthless asf. What a driver!
i dont know why, but ive been watching races and stuff from the bathurst track all day. such an interresting track and races, far more competitive that F1, and i cant help it but i wan to see way more...
only crazy aussies could have come up with such an amazing and unforgiving track!
It's funny when they've had cars retire from hitting kangaroos and a yellow flag for an echidna 😂
great lap, he will get a 2 minute 2 this year , so excited to go watch bathurst this year
JamesEKLBuzzin19 i like that prediction
Oh man, you can see the perfect steering response. And that bicycle over the rumble strip adds to the lap
2020, and this still Slaps! Epic!!
I still can't get over the sheer speed these cars make. Super impressed.
Scotty definitely gave it some Jandal on this one.
Quality comment 👌
That Shell FGX falcon looks SOOOO damn sexy. Especially next to a Mustang.
Hell yea
It may of been a golf clap.
But even some of team Erebus had to applaud that one.
Good sportsmanship.
After his success already in Indycars specially 2022, want to see this guy in an F1 car and see what he can do. he might surprise us.
this guy is a bloody legend
@FADE_crown 11 still smarter than you by a few thousand miles
Mega lap, and he was on pole at the Indy 500 this year, spec of 234mph!
Far out that is a great looking Falcon, great to see it perform like it did with Scotty in control, classic.
Forgot it was a Falcon, got so used to when that livery won the championship on the Mustang
To me, it almost looks the same as the mustangs lol. But I'm a newbie
This isn't even racing, it's pure madness and I'm all for it
Love the V8 Supercar championship. Wish they put it on tv in the UK, even in highlight form or something.
Foxtel,,, sorry Cuntel
That's such a smooth drive. Says a huge amount about the engineering team too. You can't do it without a car that's capable.
I miss this guy
what happened?
He left
He's doing well in Indycar. Saw him win at Portland my home track and Milwaukee this year great guy to talk to as well. He dominates Alabama's Barbar track which is similar to this track in the video imagine that. He won at Iowa this year as well only a matter of time until he really has INDY figured out he won the pole this year.
He straight thrashed that car. Jeez. Right on the edge the entire lap. Unreal...
I'm new to Supercars, and I don't think I'll be going anywhere soon.
wish we had this in America...I used to see Trans-Am in the 60s-70s at Riverside.
Aussies kick ass.
This is the definition of “full send”. If anyone ever asks what that means, show them this lap.
If you watch this lap and Dick Johnsons 1992 Sierra lap, side by side, you will see that by the end of Scotty Macs lap, Dicky is only just at the start of Caltex. SMs lap was almost 10 seconds quicker than the Sierra. I know it was a different era, but its amazing to see how much faster the cars have become.
I did it on a skateboard down conrod when I was a youngin, my mate went to a local boarding school in the eighties and we used to fuck around up there all the time, nothing like that though ah
Pure talent, and a great attitude. This young bloke will go far 😎👍
