I don't know what sort of training Bernie had when she was young, but for someone who made a career singing pop music, this is very impressive. She is not exactly young here, but she manages to sustain a high C and even sing the high D in the short cadenza. Of all the contestants, she one of the ones who comes closest to an operatically projected sound, so maybe she did have some classical voice training early in her life.

Bernie should have won this competition by a mile. She was unfortunately robbed.What a fitting tribute it would have been to a wonderful lady and an amazing career.

Her French is actually not bad. And I love the timbre of her voice. I think with practice she could have been really good!

@pinkfairygirl86 - Sorry, but as a trained opera singer myself, I feel that Darius had much better natural technique overall. Bernie has a fantastic upper range, but when she had sing in the middle and lower range, the transitions got a little clunky. In layman's terms, her shifting of gears from one part of her voice to another was not as smooth as it could have been. Like driving a manual, you try as a singer to make the transitions between "gears" as smooth and unnoticible as possible.
She was robbed on that show! She won by a mile!
