I think the 'creepy' question is referring to the unsettling, beneath-the-surface 'sense' that something is a little bit 'off' about a person, not necessarily something odd about their appearance - the way Link is describing it. It can be something as overt as someone's strange behavior or as subtle as the way they make you feel when you're around them - like, as nice as they seem, you wouldn't want to be alone with them.

It's sorta the "uncanny valley" effect. Sociopaths are good at mimicry and can do a good job of pretending to have certain emotions. However, because they inherently lack empathy some people can see through it and it becomes creepy. Just my two cents.

creepiness cannot always be quantified as Link is describing, but it’s always definitely a hormonal, intuitive, feeling. you guys are giving solid advice about trusting intuition, that will save lives.
Also consider studies about ovulating women. Strippers get tipped so much more when they’re ovulating than when they’re not. There’s something biological about us that can unconsciously sense these things.

  • @davidriddle6677

It's from a combination of every sense working together, subtle hints and actions that make you think someone is mentally unstable or dangerous or outside the norm of how "trustable" people act.

  • @PollyBonanzas
    @PollyBonanzas 5 лет назад +66

I get what Link is saying about people looking creepy, but there's a difference from looking creepy and being creepy. That's what Rhett is talking about. Sure, you can think a person looks creepy, but if you don't talk to them, or at least observe them, you wont be able to tell if they're actually being creepy. Because what Link is saying is just judging someone's looks, and looks don't make the person. It's the brain that makes the person. And sure, looks still can determine if you think someone is creepy or not, but that can totally change when you talk to them. That's why people say not to judge a book by it's cover. There are also differences between people and what they think is creepy. Some people may see a socially awkward person and think they're creepy because of it. Some people wont. But what it comes down to is if you feel unsettled by a person. In a sense, both of them are right.

But I think what link was trying to say about the eyes is you can tell if someone cares if that makes sense through their eyes. If you’ve ever seen someone extremely high or drunk they lose that vision of “Care” which might be why people may do things they won’t normally do sober. And serial killers have those eyes where they don’t “care” and is probably why they have killed with no remorse..

What's if it's worse outside of the simulation like Link said? For the most part, I'm comfortable where I am now. If everyone around me are robots, I think I would still stay here. I think a lot of creepiness comes down to lack of adherence to social norms, even in very subtle ways. For example, it's not considered socially acceptable to stare at people. Even though staring in itself isn't harmful, the fact that the person is breaking that social norm, it makes you question what other norms they're likely to break. And that makes you feel creeped out.

I think what Rhett was referring to is ‘nonverbal cues’. At LEAST 70% of all forms of communication is nonverbal. What we tend to pick up on when we sense someone’s character traits comes from the nonverbal cues the person naturally, unknowingly elicits. Each person picks up on these things to various degrees, and often, people who have been through some form of abuse or even some cases of trauma, adapt to becoming more subconsciously sensitive to nonverbal cues as a form of self-protection from people who might hurt them again.

I think it’s when people just move unnaturally, like they’re thinking too much or something. Like animals, if they turn their head to look around they have a like instinctually reason to, they’re not thinking consciously about their movements. Idk I agree w Rhett it’s very subtle.

As soon as Rhett said "it's not for everyone" I said "bet it's The OA" and then he said "it just started season 2" I was like ok it's for sure The OA. Such a wonderful show that deals with heavy topics and different genres. It's fantastic, keep an open mind and give it a go.

I understand what Link is trying to describe with the eye expression. Some people believe being able to see the upper part of white of the eye (above the iris) can indicate psycopathic tendancies. Kind of a "wild eye" look.

I don't know about creepy, but I have been told I have "crazy eyes" and I also know that I have a tendency to stare while I'm thinking and I end up staring at people without realizing it and I think that makes them uncomfortable. I can vouch for the fact that I'm probably a little creepy.

Rhett definitely understood the assignment. Link on the other hand.... he was just focusing on the physical, not the overall "feeling" that someone is creepy but you can't explain why.

I hypothesize that the answer to this episode's central question is a combination of two factors.
One is recognizing body language and other tics. As with what Link said, to survive as a species we've evolved to recognize threats. I would have to guess that how we do this has to do with part evolution and genes (like how humans are basically designed to fear snakes. They gots venom), part of it is experience. We may learn to recognize creep factors, whether we realize it or not, based on our experiences. You see the way your, say, abusive stepmother held herself and you categorize that posture as threatening in a folder of your mind.
The other factor is, I think, human error. As in we create self-fulfilling prophecies and scenarios where certain people are more-or-less encouraged to be creeps; We convince ourselves that insignificant things certain people do are tells of creepiness so that we can confirm our own suspicions. Human beings are incredibly intelligent, but we're also still animals. We're not logic machines. We create scenarios knowing, subconsciously, that we're either fated to succeed or fail (depending on your disposition). We are eternal victims to our own humanity.
Yes, that was pretentious and self-indulgent. I get my kicks that way. It makes me happy.

@@vincedibona4687 Right. We shape the world to our preference, even if our preference is for the world to be against us (I think we all either think that way or know someone like that). I think that's a huge part of what makes the people so interesting to me. Our intellect is so great (how many other species on Earth could figure out what a quark is?), yet ultimately limited. If you look at all of history, has humanity been able to agree on one thing? Is there idea that all people have agreed with throughout history? Is Western culture evolving, or are we just in an empathetic phase? Does it matter?

Didn't dim my lights like others have said because I was actually listening to this throughout the house on my homes, so when you said "okay google" it paused for a second and continued. Say "okay Google play the latest ear biscuits podcast" to listen to yourself. You may need to append from youtube if it is the first time. On another note I have taken the xbox one kinect (great camera sold really cheap considering the equipment it comes with) and used the free sdk Microsoft provides to interact and log data using facial recognition. Perfect for security.

Almost every day while walking from my car to my office, I meet a man. I've no idea who he is. We've never spoken. But, he creeps me out to the point of sometimes crossing to the other sidewalk to avoid being within striking distance. He resembles Rick Moranis, who isn't creepy-looking at all. It's definitely a feeling, a sense, a vibe, and has nothing to do with what the person looks like in the least.

I've been able to tell who is or isn't trustworthy 100% of the time. My friends in high school told me they noticed how I would seem a little "off" around certain people. These people would turn out to be not so nice. For some, I was able to sense something wrong years before anything actually happened.
Sometimes it's as if I know how someone will turn out long before they know.
There have been times where I really, really wanted to be wrong... but I have yet to be wrong.
