    Those GM Frigidaire 1-18 tubs looked huge. Definitely gave Norge and Whirlpool a run for the money.

    We had this model, except in white, most likely forty years ago! As you can see, the agitator has chips, ours would break and was replaced several times. I loved the up and down actions, and the clothes did move to get clean. I know it held lots of laundry, as the next Frigidaire only held half of what this could wash. That was our last Frigidaire, which was made by White-Westinghouse, junk.

      It wasn't built by White-Westinghouse. White -Westinhouse was built by White Consolidated Industries after White Consolidated acquired the appliance division of Westinghouse Electric company in 1974.

    My mom had a 1971 model WIAS (a middle of the line model) her's was avocado in color too. The tub perforations pattern on the bottom changed 3 times over the time of their existence. She had the matching gas dryer that had igniter problems the 15 yrs she owned the set. (replaced 3 times and adjusted at least twice) The lint filter evolved from bed on nails to a perforated drawer

    My parents used to have one of these, the thing I remember about it is the mechanism that moved the knob through the cycle and could hear it in the gaps when it was idle was a "tocka-tocka-tocka" that sounded exactly like the intro of "edge of 17" / "eye of the tiger" I can't seem any video with the sound...and I sometimes wonder if thats where they got the sound from

    I read the Roller-Matic mechanism was a nightmare to repair and build. An independent laboratory that tested washers, voted the Frigidaire as the best cleaning washer. They also voted the KitchenAid dishwasher the best at cleaning. Both Frigidaire and KitchenAid were sold to other companies and turned into crap. A real shame

    Does the washer have hooks around the tub ring to keep it balanced?

    My mom had the same one although it may have been from 1973+- With a matching electric dryer. Dad got the ones that had fluorescent lit back panels. Great washer and dryer, mom and dar sold them to the new owners when they sold the house in 1993, the new owner kept using them until they finally broke. They told me they could not match the avocado color so they replaced the washer and dryer set.

    While washing a load today mine started jumping up and down off the floor at the start of the rinse cycle. The tub is loose in the cabinet and moves side to side much more than before. Something broke inside and it may be the last hurrah for this old timer. Anyone have any suggestions for things to check? I have never had the cabinet open but I think the top comes off somehow to check inside. I've owned it since 1982 when we bought our house and it was probably from the mid :70's. Only repair was about twenty years ago when the hot water valve solenoid went out.

    I think this is a great washing machine from Frigidaire. I think Frigidaire switched their lids in 1993 or 1994 from a left opening to a back opening lid.

    Back when this machine was built, there was a low sudsing detergent. DASH. It wasn't considered HE, at the time, but would be today.

    I have a chocolate brown mid 70's model that has been running strong since it was new. It just started leaking at the end of the wash cycle when the tub starts pumping out on the first spin cycle. If anyone in the San Diego area knows of a service tech that still works on these, pleas PM me with the info or post here. I have been unable to get the front panel off to see if it is just a hose or something more serious. I would hate to lose this washer.

    What was the permanent press cool-down process like for those classic washers?

    • @russ5024
      @russ5024 9 лет назад

      ***** Spin-Spray for 2 min after the wash and before the deep rinse it also prevented suds lock if too much high sudsing detergent was used.

    they didnt abandon the system they sold to white consolidated and white put there westinghouse in place of it. these machines didnt need the amount of detergent recommended by the detergent manufacturers. spin is better then the competitors at the time. it takes the same amount of water as the other 18lb capacity washers.

      It was sad to see the end of the pulsating action washers when GM sold Frigidaire to WCI. As you said, there was essentially no difference between the Frigidaire and White-Westinghouse washers from 1980 on.
