My mom passed away in December 2020 and she used to sing this song to me as a little girl..I miss her so so so much and this reminds me of her deep in my soul ❤
My heart feels close to you because my Mom passed away too in August 2020. She used to sing a lot, so anytime I hear songs she loved, I sing along and I am with her, she's still around even though I can't embrace her anymore 🌷

In 1969 I toured the Republic of Ireland (and Northern Ireland) on holiday with my family and late parents. In Eire we stayed at the modern Ryan motel possibly in Kilkenny where there were several guest American tourists, presumably discovering their roots.In the evening the motel featured an Irish folk singer called Noel Gallaher who after his cabaret act invited the assembled guests to sing.An American girl got up first and sweetly sang "On Top of 'Ole Smokey".Then I volunteered to sing "Old Shep", having first learnt the lyrics after listening to Elvis on one of his early RCA Victor records.I have always fondly remembered the experience as I am no singer but have an "ear for music".
My grandfather was born in co. Kerry, Ireland. He used to sing, "on top of old smokey" to the grandkids all the time when we were growing up.. Its one of my favorite memories of him..
It's weird because I knew there was a version that began "On Top of Old Smokey," but I don't think I've ever heard anything other than the "On Top of Spaghetti" parody since I was a little kid.
Waaay back in the mid fifties, I remember my uncle playing this on the guitar as his new wife sang the song. Sometimes when I visited, they would let me sing along. I was all of 7 or 8 and thought I was something special singing with them.

Im from Philippines .we used to sing this song during our elementary music subject . We used american influenced books. I cant relate back then. No snow here. Now i know .... how poignant it could be ... love hurts.

I first learned this song when I did my primary education in Mount Hagen, Kindeng Community School in the now Jiwaka Province in 1984, Papua New Guinea. It was taught by my class teacher as part of class song learning lesson. A local teacher but he may have learned the song elsewhere. I sing this 'On top of old Smokie' all the time especially when am lonely and mostly sing with a guitar. My wife and kids sing along side me sometimes. It makes me recall my primary days and I cherish in silence.

Some the beginning of 2nd line is "On top of Old Smokey, I went there to weep" instead of "For courtin's a pleasure, and parting is grief"
Some say that the thief will rob you and take all you save (which rhymes better with grave).
However, versions with the original old timey Kentucky accent say "hāve" instead of "have."
Burl Ives version adds these verses to the end:

I of course knew the spaghetti version; first time I heard the original was via the ABBA medley, in which it's a beautiful bit between two heavy rock segments (if anyone has the original master of the middle segment, please share!). This singer has a very nice voice and should be credited! She doesn't quite sing all the verses - there are at least seven (see e. g. ruclips.net/video/15Zcyjrj-p0/видео.html).

When I was in jr high school we used to sing a paradoy of this about our teachers. It was kind of gruesome and in light of all the school shootings it's not something that others would find funny nowadays. So I won't put the words down here. It may be out there somewhere on the internet if it wasn't something our overactive imaginations made up.
