Your passion about all the things you explain make you a wonderful teacher. I was only ever able to learn when I had a teacher that genuinely cared about people. I have a feeling whether your explaining guitar or how to tie your shoes that people learn from anything you teach. Thx claus.

Your passion shines through and you've become a dynamo of content. I grew up playing guitar many decades ago and we did not even have TAB yet. Noted music you needed to convert to a guitar. No videos, MP3's, etc. Just playing slowed down records on broken turntables. Amazingly Page,Hendrix, Beck, Clapton and countless others did too...Music must have a way of finding the right people to express itself through. So glad I lived to see this and still love learning guitar after all these years. What a gift...

Perfect explanation and I 100% agree. Reminds me of an EVH interview where he says something to the effect of “we weren’t born with all this God given talent, we worked our asses off non-stop” I think people mistake work ethic and approaching things differently, or thinking about things differently, for magical talent.

Thanks man really helpful. I actually try to do that when I'm improvising on my own. But when I get in front of people I unfortunately switch to the 'lick after lick' mode which gets me to drought quite fast

It's like math kinda or anything we have made, it's just a bunch of 1s and 2s add enough of them up and you get a new number eventually, but the numbers themselves are not new, the combination presents something that appears to be new to anyone whose never seen it or heard it.

No. Go over the scale patterns for hours.. I learned while watching tv and just playing the scales from the modes. After much repetition , you finally can play them without thinking. That's the secret...hard repetitive work.

I like Klaus. I watched all his videos (or most) and purchased 4 guitar courses from him but don't agree 100% with his point in this video. Although you need the building blocks to improvise, I believe that's a small part of where improvisation/inspiration comes from. At barely three years old, with not much building blocks to pick from, some little kids can go to town on a piece of paper using colors and shapes to express how they feel while others will just scribble a few things and won't use a third of the color markers available to them. Sorry Klaus, it's not all building blocks and even though I agree with you that it doesn't come from above, some people can use the "artistic" part of their brain better than others and it has nothing to do with practicing. I think it's a lot more complex than you make it sound....or we would all come up with timeless melodies such as "let it be", "lean on me" etc. by following your advice. I don't put anybody on a pedestal but I won't fool myself either by thinking that practicing building block association will increase my creativity to this level.

      Two things:
      1. Comparing kids using coloring and a person using a guitar to express themselves is comparing apples to oranges. The guitar, like _any_ instrument, is mechanical and requires an understanding in order to play. I don’t need a manual for how to place color onto a piece of paper, but I do need to understand how to make those colors meaningful. Same thing with guitar, or any instrument. Anyone can play, but does what they’re playing have meaning?
      2. The “artistic” part of your brain isn’t a thing, but even if I grant you that premise it’s still confirming what Klaus said. Those “artistic” kids are more prone to making associations at a faster rate than others, that’s all that means. So if someone who isn’t as artistic really *really* wants to learn how to paint or draw, they need to go through the same process as the “artistic” ones, but at a slower rate. And now the discussion is “well how do they do that?”
It comes back to his point: you start with building blocks, and work up from there. The brain works just like any muscle in the body, it needs to be trained and exercised in order to be effective. Some people are born more muscular or can build muscle easier, and some people are more “artistic” than others

      1. I was not at all comparing playing an instrument with drawing on a piece of paper. I used the example of comparing two kids drawing at a very early stage of their lives in order to take out the equation the complex task of playing an instrument.
      2. Even though I very much agree with Klaus that repetition is key to make the brain more efficient at doing certain tasks, I don't believe that its muscle-like quality comes that much into play when trying to be "creative". Saying "the brain works just like any muscle in the body" as you said is true in some cases but a way too simplistic statement to describe the most complex organ in the human body. I'm no neuroscientist so I rather learn from those who are and have written articles such as:"Creative people's brain are uniquely wired, scientists discover" (2018).
No doubt that it is possible to increase our "creativity" by practicing what Klaus is teaching in this video but trying to answer the question "well how do they do that?" (implying: so we can do the same) is pointless because, most of the time, the true artists out there can't even explain how they "did it" but instead always refer to a strong feeling or state of mind (tragedy, drugs, love etc.) and that's about all you get. No logical explanations... so... good luck practicing your feelings.

If u dont believe u can create something great u wont ....u gotta have faith in what claus says no one is special on guitar no one has talent on guitar we all start knowing nothing and millions of reps and dedication get u to the point of mastery ...even Hendrix would tell u the same even if u felt he was being modest he really didnt think he was a god

If I didn't have faith in what Claus says, I wouldn't have invested my hard earned money in 4 of his guitar courses. I have a lot of respect for him and his teaching methods has been invaluable tools that I will keep using as long as I can hold a guitar.
If you think that millions of reps and dedication can take you to mastery, you're right, it can. But if you think that mastery translates to creativity, you're wrong, plain and simple. If that was the case, Claus would have already come up with legendary riffs/music and played in arenas all over the world. Has he? Why not? Doesn't he believe he can create something great? doesn't he want to be famous? Rich? Have millions of fans? ...or is it simply because his level of mastery has nothing to do with the one of kind creativity that only a few seem to have?
