  • I wasn't happy with the sound of my Marshall Origin 5 valve combo, so after some research, I decided to replace the Celestion speaker with a Jensen model...

I modified my Origin 5's baffle with cabinet grade plywood cut out for a 10" Celestion Ten 30. 👍

Clestions can be the way forward when you run the OR5 through a cab with with 12 inch clesestions .
The OR 5 should have at least came with a ten inch speaker but a 12 would have been perfect.
The origin series are meant to sound like vintage marshals of the 60s but none of those amps had 8 inch speakers or 10 inch speakers.

I own the Origin 5c, and the Origin 50 head played through a 4x12 with vintage 30s. I almost sold my 5c then was like... hey i bough this to sound like my big 50 watter but smaller... I plugged it into my bos od-2 and into my 4x12.. . and wow... the sound is there. Its amazing. The speaker that comes with this is hot trash, so now I'm going to jam a ten inch speaker in it (most likely a Celestion VT-Junior 10 inch 50 or a jensen Mod 50) and I am stoked. I also put an over drive pedal before it (not used as a boost, but as an actual overdrive) and it will change your life. Side note: You're playing it wrong... think big rock/blues riffs and heavy rock chords... thats how you play a Marshall... the clean is usable, but that's not the main purpose. I have a Mustang combo as well and it's laughable compared to the Origin 5C with an overdrive. The thing LOVES PEDALS!

I can't stand the sound of the 8' speaker but through 1x12 cabinet it sounds really good for my punk rock sound. I actually like my Origin 5 now. I am using a Peavey 112-6 cabinet with a WGS Retro 30. I scored and got the cab with the WGS speaker for $134.

The orign 5 sounds infinitely better when ran through an extension cab with 12 inch speakers especially closed back cabs . Same goes with the DSl 5CR when used with 12 inch speakers in a closed back cab the DSl 5CR sounds incredible. Eliminates all the nasty fizz you get with with the 10 inch celestion speaker.

Well, sound is subjective, but a tube amp always sounds much smoother than any modeller would. I've got that Fender Mustang as well and while it does sound good (because it models very good amps), I can still hear that it's not a tube amp because of the harsh outlines of the notes.

Yeah, I agree sound is a subjective thing.
      Very personal to everyone.
I replaced the Marshall with a Katana in the end.
Best amp I've ever heard or played through.
I've played through friends' Cornfords, JCM 800s, Fender Twins, Supros, all sorts in the past.
To me, the Katana is better sounding than them all.
      Just personal preference though.

@@shakyblues2099 Obviously it's all subjective. I've played through a Katana before, they do sound good but I prefer a (good) tube amp. And I now own the Marshall Origin 5 and I must say that so far it seems to be the best tube amp I've had (and I've had a few of the "popular" choices for small tube amps). I think it's a great little amp, kind of like a little tone machine. I really like how you can do a lot with your volume knob on this amp.

I put a 12" speaker in my Origin 20. I replaced the front baffle board to do it. It sounds good. I have a video of it on here if you want to see. I thought you did a good job and had a good sound from a mic, but i realize you are hearing something different in the room. Mine was lacking bass, and I'm sure you were dealing with the same thing. It was fine for recording but not for playing with others. It is funny, I replaced a 50 watt Celestion VTjr. 10" speaker with a 30 watt Anniversary 12" Celestion and the 12 is louder and fuller even though the wattage rating is lower. You should run a line out and see what a 12" sounds like. Ultimately, to get a processed sound like you are used to using, a multi effects pedal would probably fix you up. I use one on the front end of most of my Marshalls, and they pretty much take on whatever amp I select in the effects unit. The Boss amps sound pretty good too, but, i would go for a 12" speaker in a Boss Kat. if going that route. Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks.
Interesting about the lower wattage having more volume. I guess surface area matters.
I love the Boss amp now. Sounds incredible.
I think I'm definitely an amp modelling fan.

Don't judge all Marshall's based on this one . Its not that Marshall's may not be for you it's just that one isn't for you . Marshall's do have great midrange prescence with loads of top end and clarity . Don't judge celestion based on that speaker either ..
This amp needs to be played through an extension cab with 12 inch speakers and preferably a closed back cab or open back 2 by 12 . Try it like that and it becomes a very nice sounding amp . The origin 20 and 50 combos also sound much better when used with higher quality Celestion speakers as well and those amps already sound solid right out of the box .. the origin 50 is the best sounding combo of the 3 as it is the only one with a 12 inch speaker and its a decent speaker but throw a Creamback M65 or H75 or G1265 in there or WGS Invader or WGS reaper HP or a higher power rated Scumback M75 or H75 and the Or 50 becomes and even better amp . Run the OR 20 through a cab with any of the speakers mentioned above and you will also get a great improvement on an already solid sounding amp . Even replacing the stock 10 inch speaker with a better 10 inch speaker will sound better. A 10 inch greenback or 10 inch Creamback will sound fantastic.

Thanks. If I ever get another Marshall I'll look more into speaker types.
Got a Katana now. Absolutely incredible.
      Really pleased with it.

Awesome, I’m having the same problem but I’m opting to build a Cabinet with a 12” speaker in it, preferably a Celestian greenback, but how do you know which one to choose? G12M 16ohm or 8ohm
I’ve never had to do anything like this before
It says 16ohm on the back of the amp so am I right to say that

Will the speaker baffle and cab accommodate a 12” speaker?

    • @shakyblues2099
      @shakyblues2099  Год назад +1

Unfortunately I think probably not. The amp unit takes up a lot of room.

The origin 5 was discountined for a reason unfortunately. I wouldn't base your opinion of tube amps on this. The katana is great though for value.
