How to avoid distractions if I work on a computer ?
I 100% agree with this, if we allowed ourselves to get bored without something to distract it, the things we can do are unlimited.
So does this mean I should take time off and be totally disconnected from the world from time to time?
@@uchennaofoma4624yeah can do
@@uchennaofoma4624 yeah, legit, basically. Some people actually drive to national parks and just, walk, and just be by themselves in a silent forest with nothing else but themselves and the quietness of nature.
Trust me, I've been in that situation and I've got to be honest it was magical. It feels nice to be disconnected and be alone from time to time
Ive found that Boredom drains my energy, making it harder to focus than before. Am I weird?
This one time the wifi at my house wasn't working and I got so bored that I just walked for like 15km playing Pokémon go lmao
How to be productive:
1. Do things you are supposed to do before doing anything else
2. You are now productive, well done
this comment should get pinned
damn if I start doing what I am supposed to do.. might take my whole life!

yep. boredom really works. usually i have a huge distraction problem, there are days when i am plugged in listening music or watching videos for the entirety of the day, even during the working hours. But on some days when i choose to spend at least 1-2 hours without listening to music in the background or watching videos then the work becomes super easy to do, to the point where turning on the music feels wrong and only distracts me from my work or studies, so i can turn it off no problem. Its like there is a 2 hour buffer zone of boredom that separates my mind from the 'distracted' state and 'focused' state
I find that not all music is equally bad for productivity. Music with lyrics generally is. But ambient easy-to-listen is more like a humm in the background that appears to have some harmony in it. I found myself very engaged with coding when i turned on witcher 3 ost. But the task itslef was also very engaging and i felt myself VERY fulfilled when i finished it.
So it really depends.
@@GdeVseSvobodnyeNiki As a musician, I always find myself getting distracted even by "chill" music by most people's standards, especially Jazz.
@@GdeVseSvobodnyeNikiHonestly I dont know about the people who says lofi music is good for studying this and that. But I have never ever met a person who will listen to music during studies.
Finally, a video that shares my unpopular ideas. I've been telling all my friends the past year that boredom is good for you and is the only way for ourselves and our society to progress. And I've found that so many people refuse to accept that fact, because it so so easy to constantly stimulate ourselves. I wrote a NyTimes article about harnessing boredom during quarantine a few years back and wrote about the exact same study you mentioned here. Amazing video, I wish everyone would see this and implement boredom in their lives. If we cannot discover and access our true inner capabilities, we are nothing.
Veritasium also has a great video on the benefits of boredom.
I think that framing it as boredom is the problem. It's not actually boredom
That is so impressive you wrote a Times article on the "boredom is good for you" idea, especially during covid. I am going to see if I can find it. I've been thinking about this recently!
It's absolutely true, though. I've came to the same conclusion while working as a security guard. As long as I had the laptop with me, I would watch movies, play videogames, surf the forums and so on. If I forgot my laptop, I would devour books instead. Like a 500 pages book in a single shift. If I forgot to take both, I would sort all the papers (weren't even my responsiblity) and clean the whole premises. However, when it comes to such basic tasks and simple manual labor, I prefer using audiobooks at the same time. I'm probably not achieving the optimal working or reading (or listening in this case) comprehension, but I prefer it whenever it is actually possible.
no one gonna address that this homie just casually said, "I wrote a NYT article"?
This hits harder when you distract yourself at work with this video...I do love the message. I've realized it before, but I also have been raised comfortably, as long as I can afford the little things, I don't need much money. As long as I have something to process, I don't need anything grand. At the end of the day, I should really strive for more...
Should you though?
It's also a kind of sickness to live your whole life desperate for "success". To need more money, bigger house etc.
The interesting game is finding your honest motivations, and joy in work can surely be one such thing.
The duality of man, brother. Like all things it should be balanced, strive for success while also being grateful and not complacent along the way.
I can help you find yourself: Gib me some of your money ;)
(Please.)
Im watching this at work right now
"It's lack of stimulation which allows us to stop tearing up our brains...and think clearly." What a gem.
"In your breaks, only spend time on things that don't overstimulate👏👏". Nice one. I didn't see in any of the videos
I’m chronically bored with life, and distractions like RUclips and Netflix don’t help. Thankfully it’s the push I need to make a big change. I’m hoping to start travelling and doing new things soon, wish me luck 🙏
In my opinion, the idea of "outworking everyone" and being successful is amplified by social media. 95% of the content in social media preaches that you must get productive, or you'll be mediocre. Perhaps we'll have to use the boredom first to eradicate the subconscious guilt we feel when not working and THEN work on what we want.
Yeah, don't really want to outwork everyone, maybe I'd like to compete a bit at most. But overall, all I want is just to have enough financial stability that eradicates my anxiety about paying rent, buying food, affording healthcare and entertainment. If that clause is satisfied then I could happily pursuit the things that I have passion to and socialize. For me it would be perfect.
P.S. YT does have quite awful notification system, so I'll probably miss a reply cause I disabled them
@@sefrautiq At the work its best to be mediocre, its just work, most do it for the money.
Understanding or finding out that successful people are not always the ones that outwork the rest is kind of liberating. On the other hand quite depressing since for some people the opportunity for success will never arrive. Therefore luck is a big factor, just need to be ready and prepared skill-wise when the opportunity comes.
@@sefrautiq 100%, dont care about working like a horse, just want to work enoght to be happy, lifes purpose shoudnt be to be a workrat
I don't even touch my phone as a vehicle technician. I just pump out oil changes, tire rotations and services and most of the time I do it as autopilot not even thinking about any distractions. Not sure about outwork but it helps you efficiently complete tasks. Although I'm productive, that boring state can sometimes affect you mentally such as make you feel like you have nothing going on for you; you aren't able to use your creative juices to help you think and get excited about doing anything. There are definitely its pros and cons but I think everything just needs balance and you will no doubt have peace of mind and succeed in whatever you're doing.
It's ironical that while being distracted we watch videos about the value in boredom , but this was quite interesting
Thats the issue when I work at home.. its best to put yourself in a place where there is no choice but to engage in work.. i’ve found that after 5-10 min of initiation and finding ways to avoid it, i end up doing it anyways, and once i start i become more involved with my work, then i start to enjoy it.. and the more i practice it, the more i get in a groove with work, i almost dont want to stop.. you truly learn to enjoy it. its those first 5 min that count.
FInally a well-made video that is concise and to the point, no nonsense and accessible
This was a masterpiece, easily should have grabbed 100k views till now.
I feel like you are going to grow a lot if you go at this rate.
It's ironic how long this video continues distracting us for after it's made its point.
I feel like my time as a moped delivery rider have ruined this for me. I can entertain myself for extensive periods of time (upwards of three hours) by half-dreaming; effectively story writing using my subconscious while my body enters an automatic state which responds to outside stimulation without disrupting active thoughts.
This is why married man outwork everybody despite spending little time at the office
Why?

real and true. never let light on a screen control you
Boredom is painful, but it's very important to have at least some amount of it in our life. Not only for productivity, but also for mental health
Intermittent Boredom
Great video! I want to point out at 2:48 so people know better. The original quote was from Blaise Pascal: "All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone."
Can I outwork everyone by sleeping?
Yes u need to sleep forever ❤
By having quality sleep, yes
This is 100% true, I went on a phone fast for a month and my productivity went over 9000, all the laziness and lethargy went away. I would get extremely bored when I didn't work so I would work often and with intensity and than get bored af, rinse repeat.
"Development feels unnecessary, because life is just good enough." This is so true and so inspiring
So true, before I got into watching youtube and anime I was so productive. I was working all day, and I didn't even care.
Life is a paradox…a boring life, will lead to an exciting life if you can master the mundane.
I think people don’t even do enough in their daily lives to enjoy being bored and getting a chance to have random creative thoughts where you get to think about things you want to do.
Repitition in a job you hate can be boring feeling like mediocrity but having vision of your full potential while taking the baby steps to reach that goal is something to look foward to.
This video got me commenting because how genius you're and how good you're explaining the reason.
In other words, if your life sucks, make it suck even worse. Then the original suckiness won't suck as bad as it first seemed, relatively speaking. Guys a genius.
I once heard a basketball athlete would stare at the wall for 30 minutes and after that he had much more concentration and enjoyment in his shooting training, allowing him to shoot at high efficiency. He explained that watching the wall was so boring that just doing intense training became enjoyable.
probably the best video on the topic. Totally agree with the majority of what's being presented here!
This idea has honestly been buzzing in my head for a while. Honestly, I'm even considering getting rid of RUclips to remove the last few distractions.
So, I clicked on this video telling myself ‘this title is dopamine for me. I rather be bored than constantly hustle’ but watching it was genuinely illuminating, thank you so much!
The concept we never knew, that we all need. Top vid bro
This is seriously splendid. People don't appreciate the value of rest and focusing on the self - peace, boredom, sleep, contemplation, meditation - all are elements of the mind that have vital purposes to force us to generate new events and new stimuli. Understanding and experiencing them will help us learn when there is bad emptiness, and when there is good emptiness, and what to do about each. I hated the lockdowns, but I began growing my own food, cooking more, exercising and learning the value of living on my own schedule, and that was entirely out of that aforementioned boredom. Not only that, but understanding the issues of such an empty state has given me a sense of purpose as to what I want to do with my life.
I don't do boredom. I store problems in my mind to work on when I sit quietly. I am one of the most productive employees in my workplace. I believe it's because I mentally catalog problems as I encounter them.
What I learned made a video about this, his video was about why less restraint is how you overcome bad habits/procrastination. Instead of using all your restraint to avoid doing something, just put that thing in a place very difficult to reach.
Woah did i stumble on this by accident? I was sick of going nowhere so i quit videogames and social media, got a second job qnd started working out 5 days a week. Not wanting to play games/eat junk anymore i got bored and started being more productive. Learned to hand sew and hand poke little tattoos safely got good at tie dying thinking about taking it even further!
Whenever I'd start to work on homework or something I didn't want to do, I'd feel a strong sense of pain inside me.
When I had been working on something I didn't want to work on for a long time I started to feel lonely and sad.
It didn't get easier, but I got better at it, and now I feel a sense of accomplishment whenever I can get through a period and look back on all the things I did that I never thought I could pull off becasue of my avoidance of those negative feelings.

I think finally finding the answer, why I lost my focus recently. It is because "attention residue".
The dopamine spike from watching short videos, playing games, and other "engaging" activities will reducing your focus even you doing time box because of this attention residue.
I mastered beeing bored since I was a child. So I can just sit through it.
Glad I was able to sit and watch this all the way through. Time to delete social media again
from my understanding Cal Newport promotes unitasking and avoiding multitasking no matter what. for ex: playing game but putting your phone away and not looking at it during the download or loading screen no matter is the key to this ultimate technique.
Wow, I needed to hear this. I am going to work on embracing more boredom in my life! I loved the specific tactics for doing effective deep work!
It took me 60 minutes to watch this video, I procrastinate in every thing that matters
Bs falling like rain. The key is purpose, not boredom. If you do what makes sense you just do it naturally and have joy doing it
This is so true. Literally what happens to me whenever the internet went down.

Empires are built brick by boring brick.
I can not live alone (yet) thus it will still be hard to NOT be distracted. So I'm planning to switch my awakening time to become night owl where everyone is asleep
Yeah, that’s a really good idea. I do the mornings personally and it makes you feel so fulfilled to be able to do work you find interesting in a completely silent environment. All the best 👍
ive thought about this even since i was young, and ever since then i have always isolated myself when i want to go into a deep study session or go into working really hard for an amount of time, throwing away distractions is an important factor to do the work

3:00 Yes. What kind of question is that lol Achievement motivation, intellectual curiosity, need for cognition, etc. are traits that arent caused by boredom or stimulation. If anything, theyll remain stable (to an extent) despite situational factors.
Deleting socials makes me feel alone, but definitely makes me more productive.
I used to do this to learn to code. I had two options : 1. Watch all the videos l had saved to learn C#

yes absolutely, im a psychopath and my life has little content, best i know is to keep myself busy and at work im one of the most productive people possible, hours can just slip away when i have something for my hands

I cannot comprehend that how good this video really is. A very valuable video I've seen after a very long time.
A video about the negative effects of overstimulation, full of overstimulating imagery.
The visuals in this video are amazing 😮

Soon as Goggins entered the scene, I was like "Crap, I need to go run 5 miles right now".
So we should all bring shock collars to work and shock ourselves is what I'm taking away from this.
1:23 yes but the amount of boredom I experience is something that is greater than physical pain.
Not to mention there is SO many more interesting things you can do eith even an empty room. Like light workouts and stretching which can be done for hours and just plain screaming into air.
Studying for example leads to (for me) negative happiness. Laying in bed and staring into blank space is 0 and ANYTHING ELSE id a +.
Work as most people have it (a job or something similar) is something that I can never bring myself to do even if the other option is literally inflicting pain upon myself.
Unless said work is something that I am genuinely interested in.
That's why its easy to read books if your in a library and there's nothing else to do besides reading
So get in environment where the work you want to get finished are encouraged. Library = Reading.
What about someone who when they sit and do nothing ends up imagining whole universes and stories and whatnot
You know what that got me thinking, What if I developed a business that built Hardware, operating systems, unique internet, software and places where people can get away from distractions and overstimulation.
Very very very good man, I wish u all of best, this video is amazing
Yikes. I'm almost never bored. Even if I'm doing nothing, the amount of many many concurrent thoughts all interacting with each other creates a rather potent form of this daydreaming interactive thought-train effect that, if my immediate environment doesn't gain my attention, I would never leave. The only reason I snap out of it and back into reality is because of needing something, like food or a bathroom break, or the daily chores of day-to-day life that require so much time and effort.
I'm similar. I have "running" daydreams I can just tap into. I usually do this when I'm about to go to sleep but if I'm bored it's like my own mental tv. I've tried to turn it into writing but idk...as I write I tend to lose the mental image of what I'm trying to write about and lose the motivation.
I used to be like that. then I became empty.
Yes, when I'm on my deathbed I'll be thinking to myself "dang, I wish I spent my whole life either being bored or working"
Ironic... consistent stimulation also works.
so long as the stimulation does not change
If you are told you can play one game or do some work, eventually playing gets painfully repetitive, The states switch and it will be a relief to focus on work
This video is amazing. Thank you. I feel like I'm about to become 100x more productive using the tips & concepts from this video.
Never thought about this from such perspective. Thanks.
The Greeks already figured this out with the myth of Sisyphus
The trouble is that companies etc demand Multitasking
thx man you got me back on track
Glad to hear it man thanks, keep it up 👍
I mean, boredom is painful, yes. My problem is that the work itself is boring though, to the point where doing nothing is about as stimulating, and is in fact preferable because then I don't have the minor distraction of work from my daydreaming.
If we had the choice to be bored or doing work, we will choose work. But when stimulation from other sources, comes in, we are more drawn towards it.
Being bored fills dopamine tank. Dopamine makes flow possible.
I'm moving into a tent next year so I can focus on my projects :D
