      I don't understand, A skillwall isn't a bad thing. I want to feel rewarded for putting in hours to learn advance techniques. For example look at tf2, rocket jumping is an insanely hard technique to use for new players but if you learn it you get a significant advantage over players.

    • @EvanCWaters
      @EvanCWaters 7 лет назад +5

      It's a trade off. The more a game relies on skill, the more the newbies get schooled by the experts and that can sometimes be not fun- especially if you don't understand why you're getting your ass kicked. The more random it is, however, the more often it can feel like who won was totally arbitrary and unfair.
      Since at least the N64, Nintendo has relied a lot on the "party game" approach. These are games you play with friends, family members, etc. They want anyone to be able to pick up and play quickly, which means that the least skilled player always needs to be able to stand a chance. Hence the rubberbanding in the Mario Kart games, items (and sometimes trips) for Smash, etc. Sometimes they go too far, arguably (the Mario Party series is almost nothing but random things happening), but they've camped out on that side of things.

      Actually, that honor goes to Smash 4. I mean, are we including past music as well, or just new to the franchise? Because Smash WiiU has almost all the best music, aside from some that were relegated to 3DS only.

      DarkLink1996 As a competitive player, I have to tip my cap to this guy for giving PM it's due credit. Melee never needed to be "dumbed down" the way Sakurai did for Brawl. It worked perfectly fine as a party game AND a competitive game. PM can similarly be played either way, and no one need argue about it.
      It irks me that Sakurai is still 100% convinced this wasn't the case, and continues to model new Smash games off the Brawl physics engine. His argument is moot anyways; a competitive Brawl player WILL beat the shit out of a new player just learning Brawl.

      Actually... looking into Ultimate... It looks pretty PM inspired. Its incredibly fast paced, Smash Crew is essentially All-Star VS, Stamina being a standard mode means it includes the stocks that PM did, It's even got wavedashing, albeit in a nerfed form.
      Ultimate may actually be the Ultimate Smash Bros.

    • @nahor88
      @nahor88 6 лет назад +14

      DarkLink1996 The wavedashing in SSBU is a complete joke. Plus, Melee was far from just "wavedashing". A lot of non-Melee players don't realize that. No one is suggesting Sakurai recreate Melee (other than maybe giving us Melee HD), but actually take some time to learn more about what advanced techs Melee players discovered and implement them.

    • @jeromyperez5532
      @jeromyperez5532 6 лет назад +9

      Sakurai also doesn't care about balancing though. And that was the obsession with Project M. You could pick any character and be on a level playing field against any other character. Sakurai is fine with "Yeah, Ridley just fucks everyone up. Makes sense."

    Man, Brawl is such a memorable game to me. It was the first game I got on release day, the first game that I checked everyday for updates on, the first game I ever modded, and the first game I ever saw a trailer of and yelled in excitement over something. The fact that I still go back to play Brawl every now and then is a testament to how fun and addictive it is. While I don't like vanilla Brawl as much as Melee, I would still take Brawl over Melee anyday. Can't wait to get my copy of Smash 4 though, that game will occupy my time for years to come.

    it wasn't just tripping. Recovery was way too easy, hitstun across the board was decreased so that combos were basically impossible, and what the tripping entailed was that minimum movement was the *best* and *only* option. Camping was way too strong, and overall players just have fewer options, even fewer viable options, enhancing the camping meta further.
    Also, meta knight. Everything about him. He's the reason most stages are banned.
    If Brawl hadn't tried so hard to be non-competitive (when players were going to make it competitive anyway) then it would still be the best installation of the series.

      HERE IN DUCKBURG! Thank you for this, so much. This is the comment I think of more than any other when I'm feeling less-than motivated.
      I bought a camera in 2006, with the goal of making RUclips videos, but I didn't even remotely have the patience, motivation, or work ethic to actually accomplish anything. And I wouldn't find it for many years. Even now, I often feel like my quality-to-attention ratio is abysmal. I know I'm putting out good content, but getting people who have never heard of me to give me a shot is still a struggle.
      But you clearly have a lot of passion for this stuff, and I think you have a hilarious sense of humor. You're right that you'll struggle with the accent when it comes to informational stuff, but maybe you could make that part of it? Like, if you did a video satirically comparing some completely unrelated game/genre like Halo or Mass Effect of CoD to DuckTales, giving the latter game the edge in every category and ranting about how glorious it is, that could be awesome.
      Point is, no matter where we start out, it's going to be an incredible uphill battle. And if you feel like your efforts are better spent elsewhere, there's nothing wrong with that. I spent all those years bouncing from dead-end job to job, then earning a college degree, and developing the focus that lets me actually put together at least one of these behemoth videos at least once a month. But I enjoy your work, i enjoy your comments, and if you want to make videos, I know you can be successful.

After that, my reaction was much like yours. (BTB, KI:U was my favorite 3DS game.)

    Brawl is unjustly disliked by so many Smash players. I actually do think it's a lot better than Melee in just about every way. Were Hardcore players upset about it being "floaty"? Of course, but It was better than Melee's fighters feeling like they were made of lead. Seriously, there was no hang time in Melee. Brawl revived the air mechanics of Smash 64 and was all the better for it. It's also worth noting that Brawl added much better characters to the franchise than Melee did. 3rd party characters like Sonic and Snake were great, but it amazes me it wasn't until the third game that Wario, Diddy, and King Dedede were added.

      So true, Brawl is my favorite Smash game. I played it when I was like 5... I mained (admittedly one of the worst) but most balanced overall character, Mario. Playing with him really thought me about the game so I'd get better, but the features and fun in between allowed me to have fun at the same time. And a lot of criticizers claim that Smash Brawl was aimed more towards "noobs" than the original fanbase. I quite frankly don't see the issue in that. I believe Sakaurai made an excellent choice in introducing new fans rather than leaving them in the dark. I keep hearing Melee fans complain about its "slow gameplay" and "floaty feel" and how there aren't all these specific techs, and deep character analysis to compare the exact benefit and disadvantages between 1 and another player. They treat it like it's a Pokemon battle. I wish Brawl could just be appreciated for the Subspace Emissary, and all the new fun things it had to offer. Rather than just tournaments. I'm not hating on the competitive Smash community or anything, it's actually entertaining to see talented individuals play the game, and I won't judge them on how they play Smash. However, there's no need on the harsh hate the game gets. I think we should all just remember the essence of Smash, rather than rank them from best to worst. To have fun!

    It is interesting how I first greatly enjoyed 64 as a party game, but I desperately wanted a more intense/competitive game like Melee and when I got it, it was the best fighting game ever. Then when I played Brawl, even all of the fun modes they added made me feel bored and empty due to the much slower gameplay (especially with Marth and Roy having been my favorite characters only to find that Marth felt so weak in Brawl). Well, on the fun modes front, they ruined events, which had been my favorite part and they also changed Adventure mode into Subspace, which I did not like because I really enjoyed replaying Melee's adventure mode. Most of the new characters felt bad for me. I was dying to play Melee again and only my favorite character (Ness) kept me playing Brawl without getting too bored.
    But after all of these years, I think competitive Brawl makes it look like I actually would prefer it over Melee. Just get rid of Meta Knight and there is a ton of competitive fun to be had once you figure out how to do everything effectively. Seeing something like PinkFresh's Lucas beat top Meta Knights is an amazing thing to see, though.

    Watching this video, it was clear that you were the same kind of Brawl nerd I was. Staying up until 3 for new info on the game. Modding. You know. The whole scene. So when you mentioned the stage building, I couldn't help but wonder if you ever downloaded that program that lets you create stages in the game with more accuracy than you could on the Wii and save them to your SD card. You could pick where P1, P2, P3, and P4 spawnpoints were in your stage, and you could even use some pieces that existed as files in the game, but for some reason were not ever actually implemented into the normal stage builder. IGN also had a section of their website where you could upload your own stages, and download other people's and rate them. It was a lot of fun.

    Brawl was actually my first Smash Bros. game, and I got it a few years after it first came out. I also have never played Melee; I was given a copy at some point, but it was already too scratched to be playable.
    As a result, I never had the "Melee mindset" plenty of other people had; Brawl's mechanics was - to me, and my friends - the 'only way to play Super Smash Bros' (we also played casually, not competitively). So tripping and the floatiness were never big issues for us.
    I also really enjoyed Subspace, personally; it was nice to see all the different Nintendo and non-Nintendo characters teaming up to defeat a greater threat, and the levels themselves were enjoyable and interesting. From what I heard, the sole reason something like Subspace never made it into SSB4 was because "you can watch the cutscenes online", which is a really dumb reason, Sakurai.

    This is an unpopular opinion, but Brawl is my favorite Smash game, its near perfection, had a complete cast, had an awesome transform feature, started how much I loved Smash, abandoned clones, and had SNAKE, SHEIK, AND ZERO SUIT SAMUS! RIP Snake in Smash 4, but those loading screens are horrible in the master piece section, Brawl is what Smash should be, HECK it even has an epic story mode.... that I still can't beat because I'm horrible at Smash, but I LOVE TGOSE CUTSCENES, AND IT HAS RAYQUAZA, IT EVEN INSPIRED AMIIBO, Brawl even started the stage builder that returned in the Wii U version

    • @StarchyShark978
      @StarchyShark978 7 лет назад

      TeamThe Rayquazers
      In my opinion Brawl had the best music, items, and overall single player experience. However it had the worst gameplay of any Smash game and a good portion of the characters are completely unenjoyable to play as, thankfully Sm4sh made it so that even bad characters could be fun to use. Another thing I have against Brawl is it's realistic graphics. The wii wasn't a powerful system to begin with so this concept should've been scrapped immediately upon conception. Instead what we got was ugly "realistic" graphics that don't go good with most of the cast anyways, as they are better suited for cartoonish looks (Kirby, Mario, Yoshi, Pokémon, etc.)
      But like I mentioned earlier it's single player modes are amazing, something Sm4sh lacks. Honestly Smash 4 feels so goddamn soulless because of the omission of good modes or tarnishing them (Target Break, All-Star). Brawl is still has aspects to it that are unique, Sm4sh on the other hand will be phased out and forgotten because it fails at being unique. Overall Brawl is my least favorite Smash game by itself, but my opinion will likely change when I download Project M so I can play the single player greatness of Brawl while having good gameplay.

  • @rabidmeese7601

    Brawl is just hated because of a perceived mob mentality. You get fans of Melee that just screech at people because 'muh competitive scene'. And when you have a minority of players that are that vocal, people keep up on it. Even to this day Smash discussion just devolves into a flame war. The overwhelming majority of people who played Brawl enjoyed Brawl. They didn't notice the tripping mechanics, they didn't really care about Metaknight or infinite stuns being OP (because it took a certain skill cap to even pull it off). It's fine if people enjoy a certain game for it's competitive scene more than one of its sequel, but the grand standing is just people being turds.
    And on that note, the WiiU Pro controller feels WAY more comfortable than the GameCube controller. The only reason you see the things still used is because of whiny 'muh competitive' people clinging to it.

      Absolutely not. Nothing you said was even close to true and shows how you base your arguments only on your own personal experience, ignoring the Brawl community which was happy to throw it in the garbage bin the very second smash 4 came out.
      It's a GREAT GAME but a terrible Smash.
      "didn't notice the tripping mechanics"
      It was the main thing holding Brawl back. It's been ridiculed and hated for the entire duration of the Brawl scene and one of the reason Metaknight saw such dominence. Half the cast was made useless in tournament by that mechanic.
      "didn't really care about Metaknight"
      They cared enough to ban him in over 50 tournaments over 10 to 12 months excluding locals. He took 80% of the top spots at every single events. Was the most discussed and hated characters. People felt forced to pick him and he killed the game for many.
      "it took a certain skill cap to even pull it off"
      You can learn to infinite within minutes of picking the game. Chain grabs and infinite decided wheter a character was viable or not. The skill argument is so invalid that the reason the brawl scene died is that the skill ceiling of the game was so low thousands of players could compete on the same top level. It was impossible for a player to be better since the game wouldn't allow more technical play.
      The reason people still use Gamecube Controllers is because they are more confortable to most peopl and offer better control over the stick which is NEEDED to perform many techniques. Even among GC controllers, some don't allow you to perform certain actions because of a very slight offset. As well as a button layout which is much more adapted to a fast paced game (which every installment in the series is beside Brawl)
      The truth is, people who LOVED Brawl realized it was garbage when they played sm4sh. The community disapeared overnight.

    • @user-s9eu8ce9fw
      @user-s9eu8ce9fw 6 лет назад +5

      +Ramza, Your arguments has a lot of holes. By that I mean that a lot of the things you responded with didn't make a lot of sense.
      "It's a GREAT GAME but a terrible Smash."
      If anything, Smash 64, Brawl and Smash 4 is the closest thing to a smash game, which is begin a casual party brawler. It's what sakurai had in mind ever since the first smash game. If anything, that sentence would apply more fittingly to melee since Melee is more of the oppsite, as it is more competitive.
      "It was the main thing holding Brawl back. It's been ridiculed and hated for the entire duration of the Brawl scene and one of the reason Metaknight saw such dominence. Half the cast was made useless in tournament by that mechanic."
      It's not like melee had more than half of its cast becoming useless as well... right, right? You know, due to space animals meta...
      "You can learn to infinite within minutes of picking the game. Chain grabs and infinite decided wheter a character was viable or not. The skill argument is so invalid that the reason the brawl scene died is that the skill ceiling of the game was so low thousands of players could compete on the same top level. It was impossible for a player to be better since the game wouldn't allow more technical play."
      Within minutes. Just absolute overaggeration. If this was the case, you would def see more people online in Brawl back then attempt it, which from the amount of hours I played online, no one did. Don't give me the "well they are just casuals so ofc they won't". You overaggerated by saying that even casuals could do this from the moment they start playing and so that point still stands. The competitive scene died because of two factors. Project M was seen as a superior alternative for a competitive experience so they used that instead and Smash 4 was coming out.
      "The truth is, people who LOVED Brawl realized it was garbage when they played sm4sh. The community disapeared overnight."
      Not a completely biased comment from a nostalfag at all. Incase you didn't know, Brawl had the best modding scene of the 5 smash games, which is still used by numerous people. If you are gonna state something as "facts" you better have some seriously good claims to back it up instead of plenty of flawed logics and overaggerations. Also, you don't speak for the entire Brawl community. You contridicted yourself by calling it garbage but in the very beginning of the comment you said that it's a "GREAT game". I honestly wish I could find one reasonable argument from a melee fan but of course it's the same old bandwagon with the hate mob mentality of having to hate a game for not begin melee 2.

I like how Melee allowed for fun/casual gameplay but also for competitive gameplay. With Brawl, that was kind of lost. Sure the fun was still there. But it's a less precise game and the potential for competitive gameplay was pretty much lost, especially considering the balance that was utterly broken by Metaknight.

      Not gonna deny that Brawl with meta knight was a complete broken mess. It def is, but for you to deny that melee didn't have the same balance issues is just incredibily dishonest and it makes you look like a fanboy. I can't really agree with the more solid part as Brawl provided such a content boost in comparison without much begin left out. Brawl def doesn't have the same competitive element to it as melee has, but then again, mods exist for that reason to forfill that dream.

    I remember putting a lot of time into Brawl's stage builder. I had a few Final Destination clones (e.g. the stage is sloped, or a conveyor, or ice, or fall-through platform) and a few more-reasonable ones built for aesthetics, but I think my favorite, craziest stage ever was one I made *entirely* out of drop blocks. Hope you have a good jumping game!
    Of course, I liked Brawl a lot better than Melee in almost every area. Falco was better differentiated from Fox this time around (not to mention Wolf), Wind Waker Link was better than Young Link, and I found a lot more characters to main. And its original score ... its central leitmotif was EPIC, definitely better than Melee and possibly still better than Smash 4's.
    The only main things I dislike about Brawl were the Final Smashes (which I almost always disabled) and the Dragoon item (which I DEFINITELY always disabled).

    My soft spot for this game pretty much comes down to three points...
    1) It got me through a couple of months of physical therapy and massage sessions that I despised - I'd visit the homepage and look at newly announced characters and stages before every session and then got the game for sticking with the whole thing at the end of it. My parents knew my weaknesses well.
    2) Subspace Emissary was amazing with its cutscenes and the Rayquaza fight blew me away. I adored the campaign despite its flaws.
    3) The control schemes. Oh boy, this game settled arguments at one of my friend's house that had been going on since Melee. Nobody had to use the NGC gamepads missing functional C-sticks and Z-buttons anymore! Combining two households of gamers, there were suddenly more working controllers than kids able to play at the same time. NGC controllers, wiimotes, classic controllers... Madness. We loved it.

    After watching this video I'm now torn between whether or not Melee is my favourite. This video made me think back to my time with Brawl, when I new basically nothing about the Nintendo universe. This game introduced me to my now main, Ness. I know he was in Melee and 64 but when this game forced me to play as Lucas when I was doing a random competition with friends I decided to hone my skills with Lucas and when I went back to Melee I used Ness. I prefer some if not most mechanics in Melee however Brawl was my introductory game to the Smash series even though I had played Melee prior to it. I never figured out how to mod it but it's always somewhat intrigued me. I think I'm now going to put Brawl in and play it some more. Thanks and this was an amazing video as they always are! :)

    • @GeekCritique
      @GeekCritique  10 лет назад +2

      PokeSoxx Yeah, that's pretty much it. Melee is better from a pure gameplay perspective. Brawl is better in a bells-n-whistles and character selection perspective. Which one makes for the better Smash depends on what you want out of the series.

    I also thought it was fun to do an experiment on who was the fastest
    character in Melee by testing their run speed with bunny ears on the Big
    Blue F-Zero racetrack stage. I believe the fastest my brother found was
    Sheik who was the slowest to fall to the left of the track and KO off
    the side. In Brawl, however, Sonic with bunny ears was so fast he'd
    outrun the track entirely and KO himself on the right side! LOL we
    laughed hysterically when we discovered that.

  • @Chicagoben

    You fail understand brawl is just as hard to play competitive but in a different manner coming from a Melee player. Brawl pros will reck a casually player just as hard as melee as I've played pros (Nario for brawl HMW in melee) in both games and honestly was beaten horribly in both by the average competitive Player more so stop saying melee is harder and 10x harder to get good at.
    Both take 100 of hours to get good into competitive and that's the thing with any competitive game and even you didn't get that. You think a competitive game even for a mess like brawl is easy to get good at just because it's not fast like melee? Then it's not a competitive game with competitive players if you can get good by not trying.
    Brawl has a ton of tech and strats just like melee but much of it is boring to do and perform( the good techs at least).
    Brawl is hard competitively but in a different way. And PM did actually make much of the melee stuff easier and added so much content to it. You can play as giga bowsers for f sake !

      This is a terrible argument. Just because it takes time to get good at something doesn't mean it is as difficult as something else. Melee is infinitely deeper than Brawl and that isn't up for debate.

      If Brawl was really that much easier than Melee, then you obviously haven’t played the game right. Even though Brawl had less movement options and more infinites doesn’t make it easy. There’s plenty of hard tech like Diddy’s banana infinite, icies chaingrab (which is stupidly easy to learn in Melee), DACUS, etc. If anyone could just learn these in a day, anyone could be the best at Brawl. Why else were the top brawl players rarely upset during Brawl’s prime? Not to mention there are top tier characters in Melee that you can play that require a lot less skill. People look at Melee and think Fox and Falco because they’re very technical characters. But what about Puff or Sheik? It’s rare to see HBox wavedash and he’s currently the best Melee player in the world. Both games are difficult but in their own way. That’s why Melee players didn’t like Brawl. It wasn’t difficult in the way they wanted it to be, and the physics of the game were different. It’s not fair to say one is better than the other because both are just so different.
      By the way, if you think this is just coming from a Brawl fan, you’re wrong. I’ve played both competitive Melee and competitive Brawl and keep up with both (obviously Brawl isn’t played much anymore but I did follow it)

    Brawl is an interesting game since it's such a fu**ing good game but it just sucks massive ass in comparison to the other smash games in terms of gameplay.
    I think Brawl is actually one of the best games of all time, regarding content and replayability, just that when you've played the other smash games you can instantly tell what a downgrade it is. If you've ever only played Brawl you're going to have so much fun forever until you take the red pill and notice what garbage and unbalanced the game truly is.

  • @thelaw3536
    @thelaw3536 7 лет назад +4

    This wasn't even much of a critique, it was mostly a listing of the content in each respective game. You barely did an analysis on anything and used vague terms on a few occasions like someone saying a game was cool than go into a rant about the history leading up to the game.
    This statement also made me cringe "it's not what I imagine smash to be." (paraphrased) Melee had a lot of wacky things in it and you could play like that. You act as if you needed to play Melee competitively. You don't need to play like that just as much as you don't need to play without items. Let's not forget that even in Brawl if you faced a better opponent you will still lose and if that opponent is significantly better than you get demolished. The only difference is the degree of which you can be destroyed and the amount of skill needed to become that good. For how much Brawl and Smash 4 cut skill based content all it served to do was make matches in which an opponent was better than you take longer for that opponent to beat you. At least in Melee if you were outclassed you would not only lose quickly, but in spectacular fashion giving you something to Marvel at. In Brawl you lose by a thousand cuts.
    This is even worse when you consider that it made matches at the high level of play more boring to play and watch because you have less options of play and to master and matches are slow and lack energy which is a primary form of hype. Speed is a great way of generating hype.
