Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder :) But for me it doesn't look special enough and isn't different enough to the rest of the 1 series range. It's not a bad looking car, but it's not jaw dropping either imo. The shadow edition definitely helps but you can get that across the whole range. When I got it someone saw the 140 badge and genuinely asked me if it was a 1.4 litre engine...
The subtlety is a major selling point for me. Car geeks will spot the silver wing mirrors, canards, lack of fog lights etc. Can’t wait to collect mine in June.
I own the 2019 Finale Edition (M140i), they aren't overly pretty at all from the front and I would not kid myself otherwise. Everything else on the car is off the charts (cept the shit tyres).
Mine is currently in production; can’t wait to collect it. It’ll be the last time that a big, six cylinder engine is shoehorned into a relatively small hatchback. Mine is white, auto shadow edition with pro nav and heated seats. Interesting to hear your comments on insurance given the regularity that R’s go missing.
Scott I’m two weeks into ownership and I bloody love it. When you’re not in the mood, it’s very docile and comfy but when you are, it’s fun and quick, really bloody quick. The tech with the pro nav is very good too. I don’t regret my M140 over a Golf or an S3 at all.
@@samcourt6228 good stuff mate 👍🏻 yea I actually use the Eco Pro when in heavy traffic etc but like you said when you fancy a blast it's there on tap !! For a high end car the practicality is second to none 👍🏻 it literally does everything 😀 There's a setting on idrive where in the dynamics you can bring up the Torx screen on the pro Nav which looks pretty cool, shows you a performance screen 👍🏻
I don't have the car anymore but no, when I ordered the car I specifically went with normal tyres (Michelin Pilot Sports from memory) rather than runflats.
How would you compare this to the golf r? Having owned both your the man to ask. Heart says m140i sound is insane! Head says golf r for the 4wd usability and general safety
It' obviously a nice dilemma to have but it's a really tricky choice that even I struggle with. The engine of the 140 is better but ride and handling of the R is better imo. I think if I HAD to decide, I'd just tip over to the R...
Yes there are a few things I was surprised it didn't have. For me a couple of the biggest surprises were it not having adaptive cruise control or front parking sensors which my previous couple of cars had and is pretty standard these days.
I’m so so torn before I spunk my cash I need to be sure either the golf R 7.5 or m140i ,being honest the golf is a better interior by far and a better all round car but omg the bmw is just a killer on performance
I had a Mk7 Golf R before the M140i and if I had to choose between the two I'd go for the Golf R. The engine of the M140i is (and sounds) amazing, but in most other areas the Golf wins for me. Both are great cars though so you can't go wrong with either 👍
Sweet car - I only have an E87 116i but it can get a bit squirrelly at low temps too. You bothered with winter tyres? Friend of mine fitted them to his M3 and said the effect was night and day Thanks for posting the vid
As we didn't have a bad winter then I didn't bother but yes I also have a couple of friends who use winter tyres and there's a huge difference. It may be worth buying another set of wheels with winter tyres so it's quick and easy to change over (and looking after your summer wheels) rather than just swapping tyres though.
@@RichRides Thanks for the response :) Yeah - looked into new wheels and changing the whole wheel/tyre combo but Im told there are no major issues with storing summer tyres for a season. Other than taking up so much space! My 116i has really nice BMW alloys and I was quoted 420 a corner for equivalents to fit winters to - before buying the winter tyres! Looking into salvaged alloys and reconditioning. Same o/a diameter but narrower width, should give added traction over a wider tyre, and allow for more choice of tyre manufacturers. Got a few months to think about it! Thanks again, M
I've no longer got the car as I left the UK in 2019 but yes I still love a manual. Autos are typically quicker these days with double clutch gearboxes but I find a manual more engaging and rewarding to drive.
@@chimps4gimps I test drove an auto and that was decent too. I just prefer a manual myself. The one thing I do wish I'd specced when I ordered mine was the adaptive suspension. Without it the suspension is rock hard and adaptive suspension makes a big difference. I wouldn't have one without it now.
@@RichRides Thanks again. Yes, I’ve got that noted under minimum spec. With current restrictions I can’t demo the manual but I’m allowed to test drive the automatic (different garages obviously).
I do think I messed up by not getting the adaptive suspension as the standard suspension did spoil the car for me. I had a Golf R before this and that rode brilliantly but also handled amazingly too. I've had lots of other cars that are supposed the have hard suspension (Lotus Elises, various hot hatches etc) and none were as hard or uncomfortable as the M140 on B roads which is where most fun is usually had.
i also found the ride on my passive m140 to be terrible and i thought id made a huge mistake......however,i went for a set of eibach pros and it was transformed.the ride remains firm but is now so much more pliant and controlled.definetly worth considering if it still annoys you.
Cheers for the info. I've not got the car anymore but that's useful to know. It does make you wonder who BMW didn't manage it unless of course they are trying to get people to spend the extra on the adaptive suspension...
@@RichRides quite possibly..i agree with you on the majority of your comments..as much as i admire my m140,ive never been in love with it.My wife thinks im nuts
Entirely depends on what you need to do, I haven't got pro media in mine and I don't feel it was a mistake. I didn't spec heated seats or a sun roof and I think that was a mistake.
I am on my second MLite and I would say the must have's are: adaptive suspension, pro nav., folding mirrors. Forget the rear camera as it clogs up quick. You don't need front sensors. Comfort pack is cheap and gives you centre armrest and 3 way folding rear seats. If you have a bad back order lumber support. Hope that helps.
Pro nav was a must have for me because the bigger screen not only looks better but rings a few added things like touch screen. I wasn’t fussed by adaptive suspension because the passive seemed fine when I had an extended demo in one.
Everyone has their own opinion of what looks great. It's not bad, just not great imo. And I bought it because for me, it's not just about the looks and the amazing engine far outweighed the looks. And I totally agree with you about the F40 that I really don't like the look of!
I thought the gearbox was decent especially once it loosened up after a couple of thousand miles. I didn't find it notchy or miss gears so it may just be differences between cars that can be adjusted out.
How anyone cannot be blown away by the looks of the M140i Shadow Edition is beyond me. Each to his own I suppose.

Very good review from the perspective of a ‘real world’ driver. Picking up my m140i in a couple of weeks and, after this video, I really cannot wait!
Thanks Thomas, and enjoy! :)
They are superb
BMW M140i straight six engine is amazing.
I totally agree :)
Literally bought a white M140i with black wheels today. I pick it up next week 😁
Nice! And enjoy :)
I bet you absolutely love it 👍🏻 I do & when you go out for a good drive around "B" roads it's incredible

That's like saying "Fun" Vs "Sensible" 😉👍🏻
Adaptive actually means what it says: the suspension adapts to the road conditions, whether you're in the firm setting or not.
In the BMW instance here it means adjust between two settings only.
Why do bmw fit leather that's not heated it's a top range car this time of year its needed

It's all about that engine :)
The 6 speed is quite notchy between 2nd and third. The seat Leon fr is even harder on your back!
I find the gearbox to be decent and haven't had that issue myself. I've not been in a Leon FR and it sounds like I may not want to, lol
What kind of MPG do you get on motorways? So say doing 70-80mph? Considering buying it but worried about motorway MPG!
Thanks
From memory (I haven't had the car for a while now) I averaged over 30mpg on the motorway so not too bad.
Amazing car.
