Rossano goes beyond being a great pianist, he composes an astonishingly beautiful improvised music and stunning surprising rythmes. One of the best musicians I heard in my life. I was at the Stride Piano Summit in Florida in the room when he was giving Stephanie Trick a piano lesson. I think this was about 2007 or so. I wish I could remember everything they discussed at the piano. Anyway it was really impressive and obviously although she started out talented, she's only gotten better as time goes on.
I also vividly remember three other things at that festival:
2. Louis Mazetier making the most perfect re-creation of Donald Lambert's style and arrangements imaginable, at the piano in the bar there while people were relaxing;
3. Myself getting to play a duet with Rossano on the song "My Gal Sal" in one of the practice rooms there on two pianos! This was a precious memory. I hope I got a video or audio recording.
and
4. Me asking the eminent Dick Hyman what he thought of "Chicago South Side Piano" styles. (I wanted to ask him directly about Jimmy Blythe, one of my heroes, but was too bashful to be that direct, in the moment, for some reason). Mr. Hyman quickly replied "I really like Tiny Parham"... as he disappeared down the hallway to get to his next set at the festival (o lunch), while I stood rooted to the spot in the hotel hallway with my jaw hanging open (I hadn't even previously seriously CONSIDERED Tiny Parham as a pianist! Frankly this was a more valuable shout-out than whatever he thinks of Jimmy Blythe).

This reminds me of something Louis Armstrong said when he was asked how he liked a particular modern sax player: "He's a fine player-but he plays so many notes, how can he enjoy all of 'em?" It's impressive that people can play with this much dexterity. Unfortunately, it can also give people-especially young, aspiring players-the idea that jazz (or any kind of music) is primarily about speed and gymnastics, rather than the expression of meaning and emotion. It's the difference between "Hey, look what I can do" and "I want to share this with you." If all artists took this approach, art would be pretty shallow, and most people wouldn't be able to take even a full a minute of it-it'd be overwhelming, not meaningful or pleasurable. Just saying. ;?)

Everybody has different taste. I find this playing to speak to my soul just as much as anything else. The problem isn't that the two different ways you describe are either more or less desirable. The problem is people that put things into categories and hierarchies. We should just be grateful for these experiences of different people expressing themself in different ways.

I think walking tenths really define the sound of solo Jazz piano. I disagree with Barry. Hearing Teddy and Art play those legato walking tenths is a sound you rarely here anywhere else. I play walking tenths on everything and I use my 5 and 4 for legato tenth walks just like Oscar and Art did. barry is a relic of the post bop-era where most Pianist were seen as right handed clowns by the old guard like Art Tatum. Tatum himself commented that Bebop "Didn't the left hand much to do"

Hahaha... you must be pretty idiotic to think Barry Harris was a right-handed clown because he didn't stride. Also, not every (jazz) pianist can stretch left hand tenths but many are still able to pull off beautiful solo piano playing.
