So sorry your first experience with Etsy was bad but glad the HS warned you and you listened. Did you say you saw an Etsy ad and click on that to start your shop or did you start you shop by going directly to their sell on Etsy app? If you did it from an ad maybe the scammer created that ad and not Etsy. If from Etsy app or website it may be an inside job where scammers have paid some low paid employee to give them access to new accounts. I don’t have an Etsy shop but have slightly considered it. If I were you I wouldn’t go forward unless you find a legitimate way to file a report with Etsy and they confirm they have investigated your case/account and they give you clear instructions of how to proceed. Or they close that account and they walk you through opening the account so they can confirm that new accounts aren’t hacked. And even if Etsy does their due diligence be lead by the Holy Spirit of how to proceed. Pray, Pray, Pray before during and after on these business decisions. Thanks for sounding the alarm and hope it helps a potential Etsy newbie not get scammed. Great catchy video title. 🙏🏽

The biggest red flag in any such message is urgency - if they claim you need to act *right now* or something terrible will happen, then beware. Etsy would never close a shop in the next 5 minutes if you don’t comply with a rule.
Unfortunately this sort of scam isn’t specific to that platform. I’ve had people try other types on my own e-commerce store on my site… All we can do is stay sharp and check everything twice. I’m glad your gut instinct prevented you from giving those scammers any money!

I had the same experience and it didn't even cross my mind it was a scam, because exactly as you said, it was a message through Etsy. Before i did anything, i asked people in the Printify Facebook group and the only thing i got was mocking, because it supposedly was a very obvious scam attempt. Then i deleted my message and exited the group, because i realised i wasn't the one that's stupid, but all the others in that group. Social media has made people comfortable with trolling each other, because they know they are safe from getting a punch in the jaw.

And when I questioned this, they just gave me a run around. Never answering my questions so I closed my shop. Meanwhile, plenty of sellers still say FDA bags in their listings and their shop is still opened! You cannot communicate with Etsy. No human contacts! No more Etsy for me.

This happened to me right before Christmas. I was in Etsy for over 13 years. I tried to open a new one and they shut it down right away too and asked in an email for our credit card again. They said it was important to get it asap. We said we were not sure we could trust them. They said it's up to us and we can decline giving it, they would fully delete the new shop. So we said yes, delete it, they said asap ( Do it yourself) we knew right then it was a scam.

This is a federal issue because it is interstate commerce and that would fall under FBI, but your local law enforcement should be able to take the claim for you.

I just opened an Etsy shop in January 2024 too. I received very similar messages within the first day of opening our shop too. Luckily in all the information that Etsy provides I remembered seeing that Etsy says it will never ask you for information or to submit information off the platform (like e-mail). When the messages tried to shift to e-mail, like yours did, I realized it was a scam too. I get these messages a couple times each week and mark them as spam. I have run into similar scam attempts on Instagram also. It is really annoying. Thanks for sharing your story, it's great to know you are not alone.

If it hasn't been too long and you have all the evidence, then contact your credit card company. I had the same experience with PayPal about a year ago even though I had proof that I hadn't received the item and the shop turned out to be a scam. PayPal didn't do anything but my credit card company reimbursed me in just a few hours. Then PayPal had the nerve to tell me they closed my complaint because I went to the credit card company -- after they had already closed my complaint and would no longer work with me. It may be worth a try.

That happened to me. I'm new on Etsy and didn't realize there are two different inboxes for emails: one from Etsy directly and one NOT-Etsy. I had to cancel 3 credit cards for fraud. The thieves tried to push through pushes to "verify" the card. I have all kinds of alerts on my cards, so nothing went through, but it was a horrible experience. There was that "urgent" chaos, too. The creatures who do this.....well, they should all be put on an island so they can do these things to each other.

I think that these platforms are dealing with a lot of merchants . So much more than they had ever anticipated. They need to consider hiring a Tech company to monitor all transactions for the sake of their reputation and security of their platforms. As craftsman and artists we may need to reconsider setting up our own platforms which may require a bit more work driving customers to our site but may be worth it in the long run. Etsy has so many sellers that they may need to consider setting up an Etsy 2 to accommodate the influx of new users. Or divide by categories who remains on the first site from the second. They don't want to lose their big shops so the competition may be costing Etsy.

I am so happy that you evaded this scam. It seems to me that the scammers have infiltrated Etsy. How else would the know the instant you have opened an account. It seems that this scam is so prevalent that it indicates that Etsy is negligent by having such a porous security system that the scammers can access your name and contact info so quickly after a person sets up a shop.. Etsy needs to address this serious issue. Something is rotten at Etsy.

@altheawright5431, If victims DON'T TELL Etsy what's going on, how will Etsy know there's a problem? Many times the victim doesn't take it any further. Ultimately, Etsy is also a victim because their reputation is being sullied.

I’m really glad you listened to your intuition. It’s disgusting how many people there are unwilling to do an honest day's work, trying to scam unsuspecting, good people. even when you’re being, very careful, they have become so tricky and sophisticated, it can be easy to fall victim if you aren't 100% on top of your game.
My in-laws, in their late 80s, have recently been the victim of a scam whereby someone called them and told them they won a sweepstakes, but they had to pay the taxes first to get the winnings. They called them impersonating the IRS, and convinced them to send $1600. It’s heartbreaking because these people would have never fallen for this when they were younger and completely mentally on top of their game.
People like that make me want to believe in karma.

Sadly, a lot of shops have infiltrated Etsy selling cheap replicas they bought on sites like Temu, Shein, or AliExpress. I have had a jewelry shop on Etsy for over 10 years and it makes me sad to know that many people genuinely believe they are getting handmade stuff from those shops. Not to mention that it hurts small shops like mine. There is a lot of good stuff to be had on Etsy but as a customer, you have to do a lot more research these days to ensure you are getting the real thing. The old rule still stands: if it sounds too good to be true, it is.

You see the picture of an item, but the item the person "gets" is not the items shown in the picture. It might be similar, but it's usually a much cheaper, shoddy product, and NOT what's shown. That's actually illegal, and called "bait and switch". There are laws about false advertising, but Amazon has not been holding these people accountable. Most of the problems "of course" is items coming from China. Items coming from the US, can be challenged and actions taken. But, going after a seller in the other country is impossible. But, they shouldn't be allowed to sell any more after several complaints. Jmo. BUT.....Something HAS to be done, because it's getting worse all the time.

Thank you for such an informative video on this scam. I am a 63 yr old lady, who wants to open an Etsy shop with my "left-over" materials from years of outdoor art/craft shows selling my wares. Bad weather and time setting up for too many years stopped this mostly, so I thought about Etsy, but now becoming fearful due to this. I am so happy you stuck with your gut feelings, wow, that was so close. Maybe if more people would realize this and really read the text when it says "do not share this code", and realize it's a scam, then these scammers would go away! These and other scams account for hundreds of millions of dollars lost to scammers each year! This really needs to stop. It's at the point that countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, India and Pakistan need to have all communication cut off to the rest of the world! Once business's and countries start losing millions of dollars, maybe then those governments will do something to stop this.

I feel nudged to share with you how your calming presence drew me into your story, immediately lightening my spirit (despite your having shared a distressing experience). Thank you for both that and for letting us know yet another way that those stinkin scammers may use to try to get us.
Something has prevented me from getting it together and finally going through the process of opening up my own Etsy shop, and now i know why😲. I found your channel while watching videos about how they are basically scamming their own artists now, and it's such a shame! Think about all the customers who think they are shopping exclusively small business, meanwhile larger companies are setting up shops and falsely claiming to be small. I just learned about the horrors of design theft; that they're then saturating the market with the ARTIST'S original work, so the artist loses money. I'm glad i never get started there, but guess I'll have to find a diff, more suitable site now. Oh well🤷‍♀️ lol.

Thank you, Karen, for this video. I think of social media sites, as a residential neighborhood (albeit a global one). You noticed someone who was up to no good snooping around trying to steal something from you. But you didn't fall for it, and now, you're letting all of your neighbors (us) know about this and warning us to be careful, be on the lookout, and keep your guard up. This is one of the great things about social media sites like this one: Helping one another. I've been considering starting an Etsy shop to sell my handmade jewelry and accessories, so I've found this video to be especially helpful. I will probably still go with Etsy or maybe consider Shopify (I'm still deciding). If these "people" would take a fraction of the effort they use to do BAD, and actually do something GOOD, they would be successful. Once again, Thank You for sharing your experience with us. I am so glad you followed your intuition. If not, it could have had disastrous consequences.

There were no red flags on the site, but because we have a local shop of that chain, I went there in person. As soon as I said I'd seen there sale advertised online, they said that was a scam, that their website had been meticulously copied, and they'd had multiple people coming to the shop complaining of not receiving their purchases ... because they'd been scammed. So now, I do an independent search for the company website, and also search for scams on that name e.g. Etsy scams.

Thanks for posting this video. I just opened an Etsy shop a few months ago. I'll be on the lookout for scammers now!

Same thing happened to me when I opened my 2nd Etsy shop a couple of months ago. Because I've been on the platform I was pretty sure it was a scam. Thank goodness for the "From Etsy" in the messages, because when it showed no messages from Etsy, then I knew for sure. And yes - listen to that inner voice!!
Please make sure to report then to Etsy, and if you receive emails, report those too. I received several messages & emails from the scammer for about a month after but Google caught them each time so I didn't even see most of the emails.
But please don't feel stupid - this is a believable scam, I don't know how they can tell when someone opens a new shop - but really they are not that smart, because most of us will think twice when we get a sale within minutes!

This happened to me last week when I opened a second shop. They asked for my email to verify the account and I gave it without thinking. Then they said they sent an email to verify the account but when I clicked on the link it was asking for my bank info, and that is when I knew it was a scam. The account that sent me the email is no longer active so I am sure they create new accounts all the time.

@@44ARISEandSHINE44 Yep that is the exact scam that happened to me. I also gave them my email since I had just opened the shop, I hadn't verified that email address yet it made some sense. But yes, as soon as it asked for my bank account I decided to check my Etsy messages, then I knew - Scary stuff!

I've just posted my exact experience above and have the same question. How do these scammers know it is a new account??? They also sent me scam messages twice when I listed new items. How do they know that I have listed new items??? Very suspicious in my opinion !!

@@Sub-515 You can filter search by most recent so they must be going through and clicking on items just listed, and finding new shops.

Thanks! Yes, something like this happened to me ( not on Etsy). NEVER, EVER call back a number that keeps pushing you. Legitimate businesses don't do that. Always contact business on their original number

That was a close call. But good for you for listening to your inner voice. These scam messages are often driven by urgency and desire. You wanted a new shop and they whipped you up into a confused and urgent state. Scary!

Wow, praise God! I’m glad you didn’t get scammed. I know this feeling you’re describing! I’m glad you made this video, not only to warn others about the scammers on Etsy, but also to listen to the feelings in your body, don’t ignore them.
May God continue to watch over you, protect you, and guide you!

I rarely comment on anything but I feel so strongly about this. Girl, you should proceed on with Etsy and anything else that you want to do in this life because your intuition is fully on point!! If you listen to that every time like you did this time, you will have no issues. I have very strong intuition like that with those same response symptoms and it has never been wrong. As a child and a young adult I always thought everyone had that. It was not until much later in life that I realized that not everybody does. It’s a superpower for sure! I’m glad they didn’t get you! I know that was scary. Tfs!

Your body, your intuition, and the Holy Spirit were telling you to stop what you were doing, and you listened. It is so sad that there are people who believe that scamming honest people is a way to make a living. I am glad you listened to your guidance. ☮️ I have an Etsy shop, and was scammed out of my time by someone who pretended to want custom work, but just wanted to waste my time. Human parasites are out there, and when you get guidance they are trying to attach to you, it is best to cut the cord. Also, Etsy now allows lots of sellers who sell factory- made, machine-made goods, saying they are handmade. 😔

I had the same happen to me only they used the USPS email. They sent me an email that stated my package was delivered to the wrong address and in order for me to correct it I needed to pay the forwarding fee of something like $2.00. It just so happened that I had moved two weeks before this so I thought it was legit. But looking back AFTER I sent my credit card information and got a call from my bank that I too had that un easy feeling and should have listened. Thank you so much for sharing this with the RUclips world. We all can learn from this and I hope the all get what they deserve someday!!

I'm so glad you posted about your experience... and I'm sorry you had to go through that! Do you use a VPN? My computer security software, Norton, includes this Virtual Private Network (VPN) service. Whenever I do any banking or purchases online, I ensure that my VPN is turned on. Sometimes it gets kicked off (I'm on the computer usually 12 hours a day), so as soon as I turn it on I handle that kind of business, and then go on with my other projects. Norton does cost me about $140 per year (and I don't even have the guard against identity theft) but it's worth it. I've been with Norton for around 40 years (I was a computer nerd in the Air Force) and have never had any issues with it. Take care! When I *finally* purchase a sewing machine, I'll definitely look you up! =)

So scary! This same scam has happened to 2 people close to me, but not using Etsy, just calling and saying they were from their bank and they needed the code. The exact same sequence of contact that you describe. There are a lot of people out there that just suck. My guess is they have a tracking malware on your computer OR they have hacked your email and can see everything you are doing. My thought that maybe they also have some kind of data bank that can access new shops but more likely I'm thinking it's on your computer or some of your accounts. So glad your intuition saved you! Always trust it! Thanks for sharing, you are going to save people with your video!

The problem is that there are so many scammers out there, and their devious minds are always at work. They have no consideration for those of us who work hard and try to do everything honestly and with integrity. We are so shocked by this because our minds just don't work that way. Thank goodness you questioned the messages. You can always stop and check the actual source. Nothing is so urgent that we have to take action immediately. Bless you, Sweetheart. Thats unfortunate..but GLAD you were saved! My mom was about to get scammed by a scammer pretending to be my mothers good old friend...was asking for my mothers bank details and all that. I too, was about to get scammed by a seller, as they gave me rags, instead of the product I asked for. Since it was cash on delivery, I was saved as I refused to pay. So my mum and I shut em down!! Its ALSO imp not to opening any fishy links you get from scammers pretending to be buyers, as that'll give them access to your computer...and to be careful when sharing personal/private info on the internet, that doesn't seem to be necessary to be shared... All this makes me think, how low of these scammers. Like you've got no place in society, if your just here to mess shit up. Anyways, Stay safe everybody!

It looks like those scammers have HIJACKED ETSY and that itself is so scary. ETSY IS NOT PROTECTED and ANY experienced thief can do it. They are able to BYPASS any limit. Even though I always wanted to start an Etsy shop, BUT... because of these things and many other things going on I upto not to sell on Etsy. I'm soo happy you did not give them the rest of the info. Wow what a relief.

Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this! I love your beautiful personality and I am SO GLAD you did not fall for the scam. I cannot BELIEVE Etsy is so vulnerable to this type of activity. In my HONEST OPINION please do not work with Etsy. I am watching several videos right now about Etsy itself closing stores and keeping sellers' money for no reason whatsoever for months at a time and this is the only income for these sellers and their employees. Etsy seems to be uncaring in how they do their business and YOU ARE TOO GOOD FOR ETSY. I am also grateful to you for saying that you had no problems with Shopify because that is the platform I'm using for my business, which is still fairly new. Have a great week and I wish you a lifetime of success in every business venture you have in your life. You are an absolutely beautiful human and you deserve the best. 🙂
