When I was a little girl my Mom would do my hair, like the scene in this video and she will always tell me I was beautiful and will ask me do I believe I'm beautiful and I will look down at the carpet with tears in my eyes with a sad voice and say no... and then she will tell me 1,000 reason why I'm beautiful and that I should believe it too no matter what.... not just to cheer me up but to make me realize that beauty is seen in different ways. I believe going to a all white school at a young age I always felt like I didn't belong or didn't feel pretty enough until I got older and realized I'm just as beautiful if not amazing.

As a North African woman, in my culture hair plays such a big social role, not only a beauty or vain role.
Our tradition is to adorn each other hair with hand made pearls, sea shells, and hand made headpieces that we invented 2500 years ago and that we passed down from generation to generation.
We offer those pieces to each other and make them for each other as a sign of respect and love.
We oil, brush and bread each other's hair. At thirty three my elders still do that to me and I enjoy this bonding moment so much.
The fact that I cannot "participate" in those social exchange anymore broke my heart and I felt ugly, lost, alone.
This song was sent to me at the perfect moment in my life.

Finally a song about self confidence. It really amazes seeing how pretty people are however they look. Because nobody is ugly. Our society and generation makes it seem like it but your not nobody is ugly and if they call you ugly. Keep on smiling because one day you gonna be doing great thing. I have a story to tell before I useto be like I’m ugly because or I felt like I wasn’t good enough for a person because I liked what was on the outside not the inside.
