The Remorhaz was one of my favorites in the old Practical Guide To Monsters.

It’s a good one, a proper, creepy, tough, old fashioned monster!

I find the remorhaz an interesting creature although I've yet to ever use it. I am a bit surprised you can -tame- these things potentially. Sure only ice giants have done it but.. Well.. There is no stopping a party of getting a new pet...!

Ah the party and their pets… let me know how that one works out for them 😂

I remember back in the 3rd edition times that anyone who hit the remorhaz had a chance of melting their weapon away. In 3rd edition I always felt like it was woefully underestimated as a CR 7 opponent.

That’s an awesome ability effect. It’s nuanced things like that I feel are missing from some of the more recent monster sheets. While punishing, that ability in particular would work really well for a gritty setting!
I’m a big fan of homebrewing in extras like this, keeps the players on their toes and makes the creatures seem more visceral and real!

@@DungeonBoy-TTRPG I found the monsters to be mostly the weakest thing in 5th edition. They removed a lot of the weird special abilities from monsters to make them more standardized- so they don't have a ton of custom stuff.
They also no longer have multiple types, so you can't have a 'dragon/undead' or something.
Also if you can grab a look at the 2nd edition Monstrous Manual- it has like sleeping time, biology, etc for all the monsters- they removed that to make the monsters more 'they can fit into any DM's world it's up to the DM for how they are' but i feel like it really just lost a lot of the realness and flavor.
