DRDO’s MPATGM or Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile is a third-generation fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile derived from Nag ATGM being developed for Indian Army in partnership with Indian defence contractor VEM Technologies Private Limited.
The MPATGM will replace second generation MILAN and 9M113 Konkurs ATGMs with the infantry, parachute and special forces of Indian Army.
It is an indigenously developed light weight, fire & forget anti-tank missile launched from a man portable launcher integrated with thermal site which gives it both day & night firing capability. The missile is ‘Soft’ launched from a canister using an Ejection Motor.
The missile has a length of 1.34m & diameter of 12 cm with aluminium and carbon fibre launch tube and collapsible tripod to reduce weight. The missile has a weight of 14.5 kg. The missile’s command launch unit (CLU) which consists of a target acquisition system and a command control unit - weighs 14.25 kg. The CLU combines a laser designator with digital all-weather sight.
The missile has a flight duration of 17s. MPATGM features a state-of-the-art IIR seeker for homing on to the target and fired in lock-on-before-launch mode. The missile has a max. range of 2.5 km.
It is fitted with a high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead and has top attack capability. The missile can penetrate though 650mm of Rolled Homogenous Armour. The missile shares many similarities with America’s FGM-148 Javelin and Israel’s Spike ATGM.
    MPATGM development status
Till now DRDO has conducted 5 trials of its MPATGM with latest one performed on January 11, 2022. The test was conducted in its final and deliverable configuration and was successful. It was also tested for its maximum range and consistence performance at minimum range.
As per reports from Janes during Aero India 2023, the development of MPATGM is not complete because of its weight. DRDO is seeking to reduce the weight of the MPATGM by 10-30%.
