"I kinda used to like Star Wars" I think many of us feel that way, you couldn't have said it better.
I miss the old LEGO Star Wars when the characters couldn't talk and the devs had to be creative. Darth Vader showed Luke a family picture of them together to convey that he is his father.
THIS! I loved how characters were silent. One of the only games where it worked.
There's a mumble mode in the new Skywalker Saga one where they mumble like the old ones.
Gameplay is too kiddy/simplistic for me, could never get into the Lego games.
@@-locke-6051I miss Mario and Luigi being silent.
I loved the original Lego Batman and Lego Indiana Jones.
Some people need to remember that overrated doesn't mean not good. It just means that the game gets more attention in spite of other games in the same genre that are also good.
Even if it means not good for someone ,why would anyone get offended over a video game.
Exactly. So like FF7. It gets way more praise and attention in spite of other games in the FF series. I wish FF8 had as many spinoffs, sequels and cg movies as FF7.
Yes, but Pokemon is the one exception honestly. The first gen specifically, it did something that has never been replicated except with other Pokemon games.
I always took the phrase overrated as not as good or doesn't deserve the amount of praise/attention it's getting 🤷♂️ Agree that it doesn't mean the game is bad.
The problem is when people don't know how to play Sonic 1 just wann brain dead Spindash and think S1 has bad level design 😭 Sonic 1 is misunderstood jewel. Even low skill Sonic 2 fans don't understand.
Ok S1 is hard but S1 is a far superior game than Sonic 2 when you know how to play the game..
Sonic 2 is my first Sonic I bought with my money. So it's not nostalgia
It took me years to understand that.
I'm nervous about typing this, but for me it's Smash Bros. I've tried to get into every release but it's never clicked. So when I see grown men lose their minds over a new fighter announcement, I'm just kinda meh!
I liked Smash when I was younger and could play it for hours with friends. I don’t see any appeal in playing a Smash game alone, and the online is legitimately dogshit.
Smash is a game to play with friends.
I mean its understandable if you don’t click with the gameplay or care about the Nintendo crossover celebration elements (+plus some 3rd party characters)
Ultimate kinda lacks on things to do and feel motivated, Melee and Brawl you had to work hard to unlock stuff, and it felt rewarding and you appreciate it, in Ultimate having everything effortlessly feels like you didn't acomplish anything other than using money to unlock characters. There isn't even a trophy collection to read, barely any platforming sections, the story doesn't even use the characters they got to do interactions between them like brawl did....
@@retelefe
But you do unlock the characters… you start with only 8 and you unlock the rest by playing the game (or playing story mode)
I am going to say that GTA is a bit overhyped in my opinion. I have enjoyed a couple of them but I just don't get as hyped as everyone else for them. I feel like everyone goes into a frenzy about these games and that's fine, but I just am not a big fan of the GTA games so I can't really connect with them like everyone else can.
I was about to say GTA as well and I’m a big fan of the games from Rockstar. The overhyping of GTA VI is getting old and it’s making me less excited especially since I don’t know if it’s gonna be as good as any of the other games..
I always felt the only special thing about the series is how they are proper open world first and quite a detailed one.The missions themselves haven't really changed .You still have to do some tedious task or to drive somewhere (or shoot which is meh),but at least in the older games you had more room to do what you wanted. It defeats the point of an open world.
i love the gta series, but yeah it's definately an overrated series wich everybody gets crazy about😅
GTA is a great series. But definitely overhyped
@@donmondesanti3314I am looking forward to GTA6 but I don't know if it will be as good as 4 or 5 for me. I liked those characters alot. I hope it turns out well. I don't feel sold on the characters as yet, and with where we are at in the world, I don't know if it will have the same vibe and no holds barred writing. Everyone is so easily offended these days and its all about folk bitching about rights.
Holy crapola, look at how good that Dreamcast footage looks today. Imagine seeing that in 1999 : O
I love when you make a video like this. You’re always so positive, I mean hell, you’re the “Happy Console Gamer” after all. I just enjoy your positive spin on negative topics.
Those Sonic commercials. LOL The Singers. I miss totally insane commercials.
The early 90's Sonic cartoon wasn't too shabby. I'd definitely take it over the Genesis trilogy no doubt! Great commercials too!
Then again, nearly every single video game commercial that came out of the late 80's and early 90's were golden.
Nostalgia plays a big part of what games we like and dislike. For me, when Sonic came out, it was the action platformer on the Genesis and I played the hell out of that game. I didn't get a SNES until many years later. While Super Mario World was good, I didn't have the connection and familiarity to it like Sonic. I think having an emotional connection and fond memories are crucial to how one views games in retrospect.
I agree. I don't actually often go back to many games for that reason as I don't want to ruin the memories. As a gamer form the 80s, I have done that a few times and found myself asking what the hell did I see in a game I previously thought was good. Street fighter 2 turbo, I bought it recently on switch and I hate it now. I used to play that on the SNES and Atari St and loved it. There have been others but that is the most recent. I prefer now just to play a game once or twice and move on and have it as a good memory.
I don't have nostalgia for Secret of Monkey island, I only started playing it last year so I agree it was good for it's time but I find it overrated. Broken Sword was better.
This dude is about to make me drop a fricken frick right away.
Now where is my Sonic themed pitchfork and torch combo pack?!
Don't forget your Mario backpack
Epic reference 🤣
But nobody cries tears of joy for a new Sonic game. I think more people are worried it will be another dumpster fire. Zelda and Final Fantasy 7 however are both way overrated. Nobody cries tears for sonic, mario or mortal kombat when they are released. But I've seen girls on youtube scream and cry over these two titles. It's sickening
@@Cheeseshredder Just because a game isn't for you doesn't mean it's overrated.
I don't like Fortnite, but I'm not egotistical enough to claim that everybody is wrong and only my perception of quality is right. Just look how many people play and like Fortnite. It's not for me, but it objectively the bees knees for a huge number of people.
Zelda and FF7 have proven themselves by standing the test of time. You can't redefine reality. Those games are exactly as hype as all the people who support them. No more, no less.
@@Xearrik I never said those games were not for me. Wait, why didn't you write that response to everyone else? Wasn't this the whole point of the video? To be opinionated about games you think are overrated?
overhyped game>>>>>every call of duty
I totally agree! COD are the yearly, overhyped games for me too.
My brother. You have clearly never played black ops 2. That shit was amazing. Campaign was great. Online multiplayer was great. Bo3 was great. After that it became terrible
No one is/has been hyping COD for years except for the executive teams producing them
@@MisterLiBRiUMz true, but I work at a high school and those teens eat that shit up
Let's be honest if you want a multiplayer shooter you do not have much in the market besides cod.
Battlefield is more than average.
Halo infinite is filled with problems.
So COD is literally the only shooter left plus it's the only one that's more fast paced, compared to the rest.
So yeah....
I must add - My friend told me Snatcher was overhyped.
I told him it was no longer my round in the pub. He backtracked. Lol
game owns dude. any game with a 'smell' prompt is UNDER hyped!
😂😂 I like that story. I never played Snatcher, always wanted to
Snatcher is so good. Especially on the Sega CD.
@@UpsetN3RD And it was 100% true. It happened at Shrewsbury in the hole in the wall pub.
Weird how remember such things lol
@@ramenlover334 lol hey those are always the best memories.
One of the main reasons i love the mortal kombat series is the lore
Me too I wish there were MK novels.
Same. I've stopped playing Mortal Kombat years ago, but I've remained current with the story and characters.
The lore has gone to sh*t.
@@samurizzy Same. After the 9th main mortal kombat (2011) title. I just stopped buying them and started watching the cutscenes compiled into a movie. I'm always interested and excited where the story will take us next. But at the same time when one is finished, I'm unsatisfied with the results. I guess I expect them to go forward but it's always slight alterations of the same events.
I only play Mortal Kombat for the story.
MKX was the last good one.
I feel this way about Minecraft
I love how Rick and Morty talk about Minecraft. You mine to craft things and then craft to mine things to craft. My son likes it but I really don't get it.
@@rangersnut Children are the evergreen audience for Minecraft - a new way to express creativity for each generation. But I'm similar to you at this point - I'd probably get bored of survival mode pretty quickly if I tried again.
@@MachFiveFalcon yeah it is like digital lego with none of the tidying up. I appreciate it teaches kids things and engages them or adults who play it. I wouldn't knock anyone enjoying it, just because it isn't for me. I am creative in real life with art etc, but I would rather sit and play a game made for me, with story, good lore and characters.
@@rangersnut Same. Or if I actually had the skills to make 3D art, I'd rather make interactive environments with tools like Blender and Unreal Engine.
@MachFiveFalcon That's fair enough. My eldest son who I gave my PC, I prefer consoles, he started with Mincraft and now he uses unreal engine to make environments and game maps for friends as well as items for the world in 3D. It is amazing what kids can pick up so quickly.
I love Sonic 1, the pace of the game is what made it epic for me.
Agreed same
The Labyrinth was initially the second zone (marble zone replaced). I imagine the game would not have been as successful with such a steep difficulty curve.
Sonic on Master System I liked more :P
@@joeboo8626 What would've replaced the Labyrinth Zone for Stage 4???
The problem is when people don't know how to play Sonic 1 just wann brain dead Spindash and think S1 has bad level design Sonic 1 is misunderstood jewel. Even low skill Sonic 2 fans don't understand.

It took me years to understand that.
Use and abuse the roll in Classic Sonic games.
Try to press down while running to gain speed on slopes and to kill enemies like this.
This is how you master and enjoy Mega Drive Sonic.
Way too many people trying to play it like Mario, or worse making embarrassing gameplay videos and excusing skill issues with "it was never good"
I'm going to try that next time. Thanks for the tip!
@MachFiveFalcon To add to OP's comment, learning the level and its gimmicks will do you wonders. Trying to barrel through them will only get you annoyed and frustrated. Sonic is about speed, but it's earned not given.
This is true, for sure. Most people don't even know you can hit down and roll while still moving and whatnot!
Hmm, “making embarrassing gameplay videos and excusing skill with “it was never good”” sounds very familiar. I wonder who could’ve started that stupidity? 🤔🤔🤔
and learn to use the drop dash ( holding down the jump button mid jump and releasing it as Sonic lands) on Sonic Mania and Sonic Origins!
Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild. Both great games, but people lose it over these for some reason. For me they don’t motivate in the way a good epic quest needs to to keep it interesting. A silent protagonist should have a noisy affable party of interesting characters at least. Both those games felt kind of dull and lonely to me.
Oh snap. This was my two games. They don't do anything for me. The temples were boring too
It's the same for me. I try to like it, but I feel bored with the empty and uninteresting world.
With the age gap, I can understand the lack of pokemon hype. As someone who was five or six when red and blue came out, I can still say I’m happy to see it still going. I just wish we got fewer releases at higher quality.
Same here, I was 9 when Pokémon Gold/Silver came out and it was the perfect gateway for me to the RPG genre.
I can see how someone in Film School/College would think Pokémon was overrated. If they had already been playing RPG classics like Mother, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger etc
@@vitigaymer1053 It was definitely a barebones RPG but I think it was just a great gateway into an all encompassing storm. Between the show, the movie coming out, the games, and the cards it really just took completely over.
To be fair, you were too old when Pokémon first hit our shores in 1996 or 1997. I was part of the first generation of Pokémon at the perfect age of 8. It was a HUGE hit and probably the biggest phenomenon in entertainment during that time. It was monumental!!! It was insane!! Everybody was going crazy about this franchise!
Johnny is never old 😤
@@jeffdlr3056 lol 😆
It's not about his age, it's more about the fact that some games just don't appeal to some people like they do to others. For me personally, I've just never been into RPG games at all. Action/RPG's are different though I love those types of games.
to be fair, pokemon is too basic compare to the section of jrpgs at the time, smt is just better in every way and more in depth
@leadme2thebliss21 In this case, it DOES. It was aimed at elementary school-age kids. Reception from older fans was unexpected.
Being a Sonic fan these days is rough. Sonic Superstars was one of the most lazy releases from Sega in some time and while I enjoyed Frontiers I couldn’t help but wonder why not just give us what we all want with Adventure 3? In terms of trying a game in the series that may change your mind on the series, I think both Generations and Colors hold up really well today especially with the new means of playing them on a Series X or HD re-release.
Just played pokemon red 2 months ago, it's amazing how much that game holds up.... Its so addicting
My dream is to go back one day and catch Mew using the glitch - no external tools allowed.
@MachFiveFalcon Why would you have ever needed external tools? Just use an Abra
@@smileytlj23 Forgot how easy the glitch was - was thinking back to when most kids used a Gameshark.
@@smileytlj23 Forgot how easy the glitch was - was thinking back to when most kids used a "Game + Shark".
I would recommend Sonic 3 and Knuckles. That game has aged like fine Wine.
Only Sonic game I feel compelled to play to completion once I start, and I'm a big Soinc fan.
Sonic Cd is also really good
It’s definitely the best in the series!
He'd probably like it, but again, he'd probably think it was overrated.
It's cool he really enjoys at least a couple of Sonic games, and doesn't hate the rest. Nobody can enjoy everything.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles is legit my all time favorite Sonic game, with CD being a close second, both of them have aged wonderfully ❤
Did you play Phelios for the Genesis? I loved the Greek theme for a shooter and the Medusa boss sticks with me all these years later.
Great Video! Really fun to hear your take on some of these. Mortal Kombat was one I loved back in the day but just cant seem to get same excitement for the new ones. I honestly wish I was a few years younger so I could have been the right age for Pokemon when those games hit so I could have been a part of that hype. Great stuff man!
Underrated games video next!
you rule dude! This channel and CGR have given me so many awesome suggestions for pickups. I am right there with Mark from CGR that Truxton is amazing. I absolutely love it.
ET is underrated
I had never heard of Ys before finding your channel, and it definitely lives up to the hype for me after only playing 1,2, Origin, and Celceta so far. Can’t wait to do 8 eventually!
Sonic Adventure is an incredible Sonic game. It's not the best game ever, but Sega really had great ambition with it, and it's still fun to play. The parts that really make it shine are the intertwined storylines, the multiple playable characters, and the incredible soundtrack. It really showed Sonic's potential after the Mega Drive era.
I actually prefer Adventure 1 over Adventure 2 honestly.
@@jaretco6423 I love both, but same. SA 1 Sonic levels were peak 3D Sonic for me, and I enjoyed the other characters on the side in spite of the criticism.
@MachFiveFalcon Not just that. But I dislike how the gameplay style in Adventure 2 was butchered from Adventure 1. Especially the Treasure Hunting & Mech Shooting levels. Sonic & Shadow's gameplay is the best. But there level designs are too linear for my liking.
@@jaretco6423 Very true - they went from what felt like fun "minigames" (even though they're collectively bigger than the Sonic portion) to groan-inducing barriers to get passed in Adventure 2.
When I read the title I thought of something games that are a bit overrated but in my opinion the biggest one that's overhyped is definitely fortnite lol 😂😂😂
My youngest son loves Fortnite but he has gotten bored with it.

Hope you and the girls are doing great! I can so relate to this and it made me realise that im not in a rot i just cant find the shine in alot of new games as they become overhyped and overpriced its turning in to a pursuit of old joy thats not there anymore im going to boot up some old games instead :P Again ty for being real and not shying away from stuff like this :)
Johnny, could you do a future video on your favorite or top 10 video game trailer reveals? That would be great.
Sir!!!!! Why are you triggering this early on a Sunday 🤣😂🤣
I'm going to throw Red Dead Redemption in as overrated. Everyone always talks about how good the story is - but for me it was so boring. Definitely a 6/10 game
It was the sole reason I bought on xbox one x, few games have been as disappointing.
I completely stopped paying attention to what you were saying when Sunshine Coastline came on in the background, I'll have to go back and rewatch that part
Wow, you are really stepping on some peoples toes!😂 your next video should be about games that got you hyped! Big time! Great video thanks for sharing. Cheers from Ottawa Ontario.
Can't agree with Sonic 1 being overrated, especially considering all the criticism it's gotten over the years including claims that the series has never been good. My vote is for The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. It's a fantastic 9 / 10 game for sure but it's often held up as the single greatest video game of all time. I can discuss seriously that it may belong in the top fifty but the sheer amount of people who say it was the best of all time, most of which weren't even alive for the first few video game generations, makes me shake my head.
I think it is but not sure why
For me its the souls games for whatever reason they've just never clicked with me
You know what to expect with each entry to the series nothing new apart from elden ring but thats just an open world version
Loved the souls games but elden ring still hasnt really ever clicked for me
@@milklordnomadicBoring open world. Their other games, like Sekiro, are much better. If you look at any of the cheese videos or “recommended build guides” that have 1m+ views, you get a sense that the community itself hasn’t really played the game as intended and isn’t rating it fairly.
Dark Souls is so cool, but I couldn't get very far. I might start again as a more befitting class.
It’s one of those genres your either all in on it or not haha
Sort of off topic, but I'm loving the resurgence of Mark from CGR.
I do feel that way about Pokemon now, I wouldn't have said the same before the Switch. I just wish they still held themselves to the same quality they had when they were doing HG and SS.
I never understood how there can be profund, sometimes innovative and hard worked RPGs ,and then there is Pokémon...
If it ain't broke don't fix it most people play for the online competition and they have been trying to change starting with arceus
@@johnlawful2272they didn't change anything, its still just as bare bones as it always was, just now more so than ever because now its an empty open world game
@@_b_a_g_u_e_t_t_e_3191 poke Park wii and mystery dungeon what more do you want we got people complaining about change with a lot of other games when they can always play the original
My first jrpgs were CT, FFVII, FFT, FFVIII, PS1 Square etc. So I got spoiled. I'd love to play a Pokemon that is more involved.
Dude most jrpg series by nature are rather similar and unchanging, final fantasies 4 to 9 are basically all the same gameplay wise, as is dragon quest, even smt post nocturne. The problem with pokemon is the lacking difficulty, the way too many pokemon and the fact that game freak suck at making games.
Mine is Star Wars Kotor games. They are good, but not as good as I heard people claim
I honestly agree. I love them but at the same time I don’t think they’ve aged very well
They're a really well made crpg that treats star wars universe well. CRPGs are one of the most important historical genres of PC gaming, since they're rules based which make them inherently easy to program. KOTOR represent a big leap in the very rocky transition of CRPGs from overhead 2d graphics to 3d 3rd person. It was enjoyed by CRPG purists, casual gamers, and star wars fans. For Star Wars fans: training to be a jedi, forging your own lightsaber, fighting a krayt dragon, learning the history of the Sith by delving their temple, different jedi classes, roguish smugglers, killer droids, sleek futuristic city. Also, the first game had a twist that rivaled "Luke, I am your father." Having said all that, the games themselves are probably not up to the extreme and universal praise they receive. The second one had serious narrative issues. For me, I loved a well-made, big budget CRPG that moved the genre confidently forward, and I had fun expanding my limited understanding of the star wars universe.
Great topic. Thanks for sharing. One's over hyped games list can be very personal. There are so many out there for each of us. It can lead to disappointment for sure.
I absolutely can understand how any of these titles can make you feel the way they do.
But Pokemon is a very special case of something that objectively deserves every bit of hype it has today. But that is because of what Pokemon USED to be. Pokemon was a social experience disguised as a video game. As you said, you haven't got these games when they originally came out.
We were all debating on where to catch Mew, we were all sharing secrets with each other, it rallied people who didn't talk to each other even. For me personally being from Quebec, they even thaught me English when I was 10 years old.
I would agre that in the modern environment, Pokemon is but a shell of its former self and is now overhyped. But back then? Especially the first gen, it deserved the hype.
Personally I don’t agree sonic is over rated. I found having it bundled with every package ( megadrive collection ) made me sick of it.
Then when I bought a megadrive again, I ordered Sonic as it was only £5.
Playing it on the system felt more legit and I enjoyed it again.
Same thing with golden axe. On a compilation I was like “ meh “ but playing it on the system I was hooked.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Assassin’s Creed.
i immediately thought of assassin's creed when johnny mentioned "overhyped" lol
The new game looks good though. Time for a change 😂
@@josepartida1711 I played most of themand loved black flag back on the PS3, tried to replay afew of them on PC recently and they don't really hold u, yes they look good maxed out but the movement/traversal is all kinds of clunky
I like this video so much I actually went back to run it on the youtube website so it counts as an official view in my watch history, and I literally clicked the like button.
Great episode! Maybe you can do a video game movie hype video some time. We older gamers all remember the hype for the Mortal Kombat movie in the 90’s. Hearing your thoughts on the original Mario and Street fighter movies would be pretty cool. 🤘🏼
I think Elden Ring is a tad bit overhyped it’s a really good game but since I’ve played every Dark Souls game I kinda feel like it’s just Dark Souls 3 but open world I’m kinda burnt out on those type of games too so that probably doesn’t help lol
The Last of Us.
Great video as always. You never fail to entertain. One of my favorite creators of all time.
Awesome video man 😎!
/me unequips pitchfork 😂
This comment reminds me of FFXI, lol
OMG that's exactly how I always viewed the first Sonic game. You believe your going to fly through the levels but your constantly stopped by stuff in your way. Game is good but not as good as they made you think it was going to be!
Spaceships of Red, Blue and Green. You can hear the alien ladies scream....WE WANT TRUXTON!
I don’t get the hype of The Last of Us.
Played it for the first time last week, the remake. It was enjoyable but I don't get it's best game if all time status ( same with Witcher 3)
I liked the game. I played it on my PS3 around the original release. The story was good, but everything else was just ok. It has since been made out to be a must play by most youtubers & given a remaster & then a remake, i don't understand the need for it. It has had a sequel which had much better mechanics but a much more divisive story that has also had a remaster. When is Naughty Dog going to move on from this series & give us something new, we don't need the original on repeat. It had a good story, but it's time people stopped praising it as something that was revolutionary in gaming, good story, everything else was just ok.
I got iton PS3 back in the day, the first couple of hours were pretty slow and yes it gets better and has a good story but once it was done I never went back , it's like one of those movies you remember every bit so no reason to watch it again.
Yup. Let's talk.
Spent most of my gaming hours this year playing through Tears of the Kingdom and Red Dead Redemption 2 and found both to be vastly overrated.
Tears of the Kingdom felt like more Breath of the Wild and still had far too few traditional dungeons, I still hated the weapon degredation, far too many meaningless collectibles, etc.
Then I played Red Dead Redemption 2 and certain moments were made anticlimactic by virtue of certain characters being alive in the first game. Couple that with far too much time spent riding a horse through wilderness or driving a cart. I especially hated certain mini games like fence building, cow milking and stall cleaning in the epilogue and the gunplay was far too reliant on the aim assist and dead eye and never felt great. Also had a couple hard crashes too.
Starting to really doubt new games when it comes to reviews and the consensus of the player base. I just don't see the appeal anymore of most new games
Final Fantasy, Assassins Creed, Minecraft, Fortnite
To quote SuperDerek, "Hype responsibly!"
I consider this video a personal attack lol.
Honestly I stay out of ones like games being overrated. Because it's such a pointless term. It's not overrated for the people that are enjoying it. And people that don't enjoy them aren't underrating them. It's a subjective enjoyment thing.
Its not a pointless term at all. It conveys an idea and does so clearly. Think of all the conversations that involve subjective things. Are these conversations pointless? Hell this whole channel is about subjective things.
I'm with you on Pokémon, I think maybe because I was older a when it came out and it felt like a RPG game for kids? I appreciate it for the fun monster designs, but it's just never been very compelling gameplay for me. I get really bored when I try to play them because the combat is so simple and repetitive.
Pokemon Blue? Trippin.
GTA and ZELDA are overhyped for me. It just never clicked for me.
Truxton, on the other hand, is such a great early Genesis shmup that it summarizes Toaplan way of making shooters, with its brutal dificculty, abrasive and catchy music, over the top lasers and giant bosses.
Toaplan were one of the kings concerning shooters back then.
I love Truxton and nostalgia doesn't play a part. have to admit i did read about the game when it was current, and damned straight i wanted to play it, but did not have a megadive. some 20-25 years later i was mucking around with mame and.......hey truxton arcade lets have a go, i fell in love! awesome game. fast forward to now, a small mod fixing the only issue i have with the md version, the music is wrong! a msu hack exists that updates the sound track, and the game is now perfect. Arcade truxton and even pce versions are very nice too, but SO hard. MD is also hard but def less so :)
@@NLSagat I agree with you, arcade version is the best. I own both the MD and PCE versions, but the PCE I still haven't beat it yet, it's brutal. I also love the way it sounds on the PCE. One of the most interesting thing about 8bit and 16bit generations is that each console sounds are unique :D
For me I'd say The Last of Us is over hyped.
Get outta here
I played some of the first game, could be the only series where the first game got remastered a year after release and then a remake recently. I feel the supposed remake and remastered of Part II is either unnecessary or did them just for a cash grab. I couldn't get the whole hype behind the games.
Same here, I literally got kicked out of a discord server for calling TLOU overrated. I didn’t even say the game was bad. All I said was that I wasn’t interested in the story, I wasn’t interested in the characters and the gameplay was very bland and slow. People hated me for that. I played through both the 1st game and the 2nd game like 2 times and still never understood the hype. That game has the most sensitive fanbase I’ve ever seen for a game. You can’t say 1 little negative thing about it without people getting offended.
My goodness 😂. That’s some shout, must disagree.
I agree. I’d give it a 8.5/10. It’s good to me. Not excellent. I haven’t beat the second game. That one seems more enjoyable than the first, to me.
I'm glad you said what you said about Sonic. Sometimes you feel like you're the only one. Adventure rules and I really liked Frontiers actually, but I think Sonic as a character is better than he is as a video game.
Diddy Kong Racing (it just feels so... empty when racing, like you are alone on the track) and Goldeneye (I just can't get used to the antiquated controls).
Sonic the Hedgehog requires some skill.
It also requires patience
I remember 10+ years ago, Final Fantasy 7 was absolutely hyped beyond belief to the point where you would think it was the 2nd coming of Christ. Like, if you didn't own it or play it, there was something wrong with you. I bought into the hype. I bought 3 different variants of the PS1 game because people told me I wasn't a "true collector" if I didn't own them.
But all these games did was sit on my shelf for 10+ years. I tried to get into the game, but it was always a one time experience for me. Play it for an hour, then don't come back to it until years later. I felt guilty for not playing it. But I slowly accepted that it's perfectly okay to not be into certain genres of games. (I don't like RPGs in general). I've since sold all my variants of Final Fantasy 7 and the guilt has melted away. I am free.
I really enjoyed the original, but I will never play the remake. Too hyped up, too animu, it's everything that's wrong with modern FF despite it having a fun combat system and beautiful graphics
I always thought GTA IV was the most over hyped game in the franchise. I love GTA. But IV is my least favorite 3D GTA.
Yakuza, I just can’t get into them no matter how hard I try
To be honest I always found Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. I think the games are decent but definitely not the masterpiece people say it is.
i think for me because even as good as they look it still just reminds me of the limitations and underpoweredness of the switch. the first party games always run the best with the rest being very hit or miss but even at their best it just makes me want to experience what the game coulda been on actual current day hardware.
I agree, I’m a huge Zelda fan and I never enjoyed botw/totk. The lack of real dungeons ruin the games for me.
*fuses torch and pitchfork*
@@TimDespairBear11TotK literally has real dungeons

Animal Crossing is massively overhyped and was thrown in the limelight during covid. Its a well-done cozy sim, but it isn't even the best cozy sim out there, yet it sells like hotcakes and has a massive fandom. I like the game, and the soundtrack, but I don't love the game.
I agree, I think it's frustrating because it has the potential to be so much more. Even just letting you properly interact with the countless things you're expected to place around the game world would elevate the game to a whole new level. Like actually being able to hop on a scooter or bike, or to be able to play the pinball machine in your house. The neighbors could really benefit from having some more interesting interactions and dialogues too.
Also a pipe dream for me is something of a fantasy RPG (perhaps something along the lines of Fantasy Life or Rune Factory) where you can party up with some of your villagers, each having classes and skills based on their personality and what type of animal they are. With the life sim elements retained of course. Even if the whole thing was like, an in-universe DnD the player and villagers are in on, as long as there's proper gameplay and visuals for how the characters imagine the whole scenario/campaign in their minds.
Sonic is a MOMENTUM based platforming game. You don't have to speed through the levels. That is for experienced players. Just take your time with it and have fun messing around with the physics of the game(almost like pinball). I highly recommend Sonic Mania and Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Truxton is early Toaplan which went on to become Cave and its a fundamental part of the Bullet Hell Shooter history.
Sonic is underrated at this point. Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic Mania Plus, Sonic 3 and Knuckles are timeless masterpieces imo. Also I love how they added the drop dash in the Sonic Origins compilation. Makes the classic games feel new again.
The advance trilogy needs to be re release.😢
Being honest….breath of the wild and TOTK. Amazing physics and open world with creativity, but at the cost of terrible story, no dungeons, unsatisfying combat with the weapon durability and overall 2 games I will probably never want to play again. I’d be curious if years from now people agree with me, but while I appreciate what Nintendo did with the open world and systems, that’s not why I love Zelda. Give me shorter more carefully crafted games, I’m not interested in screwing around and experimenting for 120 hours 😅
I agree I loved botw and totk but they felt like another game series not the 3d Zelda im used to
@@beaner2189I'm right there with you guys. They're good games, but aren't good Zelda games to me.
@@beaner2189good point. If they were named something generic like “the great fantasy adventure” it would not be “the greatest game ever made” comments

Agree about the story in BOW but Zelda's character arc in TOTK is captivating stuff.
I understood the hype of Pokemon Cards but never collected them. 😂
Loved this episode. I feel this way about a lot of games, too.
For someone that was more into Capcom fighters, the old MK was always something that felt way too unpolished to play.
The current stuff is a bit more refined however.
Yeah after the GORE wore off I was like man turn street fighter 2 back on! I do like mortal Kombat 2 thought. I find that better then mk3.
I kind of agree with you on Pokemon I love the series and all but over the years I just felt it's not as challenging as it used to be. I kind of miss the difficulty of gen one and two in which Pokemon run away or you only get one chance to catch that really rare one I feel we need to bring that back.
You're basically just describing the safari zone. Maybe the legendary trio. They didn't particularly make the game more difficult.
Im 36. I got pokemon blue at launch (was always sold out). Its a basic rpg gameplay wise, which is a good thing for me lol. But man it was epic. Music was so awesome.
I think it’s good, but it’s definitely the worst generation of Pokémon games. Mainly because of wrap. Every single time I play this stupid game, I get stuck in an endless wrap combo at some point. Every other Pokémon game is automatically better because they removed that garbage mechanic.
The color scheme on that last game is Beautiful!!
Tears of the Kingdom 🤷🏻♂ Veeery good game and mechanics... but that's it. (Overrated is not bad. It's just that. Over... rated).
Example: I LOVE souls game and Skyrim. They're at the top for me! However, I would definitely understand if they were called overrated.
In fact, my favourite video game is DEADLY PREMONITION. And I say it with pride. But, of course, I would definitely understand if someone thinks it's a horrible, wonky mess... but hey, it will still be my favorite 🤷🏻♂
Agree. That feeling stretches to botw to me as well
never felt the hype for sonic and had the same in-game experience as you with it. I grew up playing sonic adventure 1 for dreamcast at a friends house though and that game means a lot to me. its funny how we share all the same opinions on this lol
Sorry to ask johnny but did you ever pick up pokemon emerald? As you loved sapphire and that was like the tears of the kingdom essentially to Ruby/Sapphire 😂
you're not gonna like this one johnny but BoTW and ToTk are the most overrated games of all time
I like them but they aint masterpieces like people make em out to be
Open world slop
THANK YOU I 100 % agree. And they are NOT Zelda games by the way
@@BoboBreezOne can agree or disagree about their quality, but to say they’re not Zelda games is just plain stupid
@Livingtree32 Me Stupid. Zelda game. Find item. Unlock new area. I CAN DO IT NOW! Oh, now that I have item, now I can go there! Use item! BotW? No Smart, can go anywhere! Do anything any time. Go straight to end of game! SMART
I never really understood the appeal of sonic, I've tried getting into the game for years but I never know how to play it. Is it a platformer or a timed trial. I want to embrace the "speed" theme, but it interrupts with the mario-esque game play. Why would you explore when your moving so fast and are expected to dash across the stage. Idk it's just ends up being a headache trying to get into the groove of things. Idk if anyone else can relate with this experience. Have major respect for the franshise tho.
Try to use the roll while you run to destroy enemies and to gain speed on slopes and loops.
If Sonic 1 have too many classic platform segments for you, try Sonic 2 or 3&K where the formula is a bit more refined.
Sonic wasn’t about blind speed. It was about mastering the level design and keep a flow with your momentum.
I said this another comment but learning the level and its gimmicks will do you wonders. Trying to blindly speed through the level will only frustrate and annoy you. Sonic is about speed, but it's earned not given.
My hype for the Pokemon series comes from it being one of the few RPG's that i dont need to pull up a guide in order to play. I love Final Fantasy, but there are so many moments where i just dont know where to go, or how to defeat a boss. And thats just never a problem with Pokemon.
Hey John! Found some games for Kim to play if she hasn't already. I recently started playing Disgae DS and I think you or Kim would really enjoy them for an rpg!
BOTW! Far more interesting open worlds
You, Crunchy, are triggering folks on this fine Sunday.
I agree with this strongly
You right. I almost slept playing it trying to roam the world. It's all open space with little artifacts sparsely spread through the entire land. And the weapon breaking kills the fun for me. I don't want to repair the Master Sword because it has a timer on it and it gets dulls when it runs out. Stupid mechanic
How. Dare. You. 😂
@@TheDumontShowI played this on cemu with a pretty beefed up system. It's absolutely gorgeous. That aside, I also used cheats (available in the emulator) for infinite stamina and unbreakable weapons. Stamina in any game kinda ruins it for me and for zelda it's a big part of the game in a sense because you need to complete shrines so that you can upgrade stamina. The way I played it was a great experience. I could climb any mountain and go pretty much anywhere I wanted. One of my favorite Zelda's of all time if not my favorite game of all time.
Sonic the hedgehog is a classic masterpiece.
When I was a teenager, Pokémon was my biggest addiction. My perfect video game weekend was when a friend lent me Pokémon Red, and I rented Pokémon Stadium to transfer my Pokémons to it.
As an adult, I finally had the money to buy Pokémon X for the 3DS, but the experience was underwhelming. It felt repetitive and too similar to Red/Blue, as you mentioned. Among the recent games, the only one that stood out to me was Arceus. While not perfect, it introduced some nice innovations.
X and Y are better though, because they don’t have the generation 1 wrap mechanic so I don’t have to get tortured by that.
We need a HCG and CGR crossover debating the merits of Truxton. And we need it YESTERDAY.
Mario Kart 8- YEAH I SAID IT!!
You will go to hell
I agree. It’s one of my least favorite Mario Karts.
Always a matter of opinion 😎✌️
You should try Pokemon Legends Arceus. It deviates from the standard Pokemon fare, if you like more open world type games that may be a good one.
I’ve heard a few older gamers speak similarly about Pokemon. To them, it was fine or fun or whatever, but I think for a lot of us that got on that hype train, it came out at the perfect time for us in early grade school when we all love animals and adventure. It was reinforced by the trading cards, and toys, and literally anything they could slap a Pikachu on. And it was complemented by other similar anime inspired collectathons like Yugioh and Digimon. Whereas the slightly older 80s kids had, had their Saturday morning cartoons and toy lines full of GI Joe, He-Man, TMNT, and Transformers.
That being said, as an aging gamer, the new stuff is over-hyped and as it’s become more and more mainstream, and coveted by diehards, it has lost its soul.
Sonic deserves all the hype it gets. Iconic and great game.
I have no idea where this recent "Sonic is overhyped" trend comes from. But they're objectively wrong. Any unbiased look at the history of gaming proves that.
For people to claim that they can look back in time and go into peoples heads and say "You are all wrong about how much you like this thing. And you buying and supporting it was a mistake even though you don't regret it and remember it fondly." is the highest form of egotistical thinking I can imagine.
Not everybody likes or dislikes the same thing. I don't like Fortnite. I would be wrong to say it's overhype. It's staying power has proved that it has a large loyal fanbase that loves that sort of thing. Sonic is and was exactly as hype as history proves it to be. No more, no less.
@@Xearrik People not mastering the roll in the classic games + easy clickbait to create outrage on impressionable youngsters + ... create the perfect storm.
Sonic is weird man. While it does have some good games out there, many others were hit & miss, mediocre or just plain bad. I want to support the series. But I just can't see myself being addicted to the franchise that much. I agree Sonic is overhyped as hell.
Yeah. And I don't feel like it gets much hype anymore.
The hill I will die on: "Breath of the Wild" is a good game, but it is absolutely overrated.
