I live in the UK and as a lifelong player of the guitar I joined Bryan Sutton's superb ArtistWorks guitar school and this led me to start playing the mandolin and joining Mike's school. This was back in 2014. As a raw beginner, Mike encouraged me to cross the Atlantic to attend the 12th and, as it turned out, the last Mandolin Symposium, in 2014. He assured me that I could both cope and benefit from the experience, this judgment being based on what he had seen of my video submissions. It was an amazing experience and to attend one of David Grisman's classes was one of many highlights and to chat over breakfast and hear him describe playing at the Royal Albert Hall in London was just great. Both Mike and David are inspirational players and teachers and they and the other tutors at the Symposium fed my desire to progress on this wonderful instrument - the mandolin. The music appreciation sessions which took place straight after breakfast were really interesting and revealing interviews with each and every one of the tutors. They gave one an insight into how these wonderful players developed as musicians. It was great to see this video!

I went to the first mandolin symposium. It was incredible. I hope they start doing it again someday.

Mike Marshall is of the most well rounded musicians playing the mandolin today. I can't get enough of his playing.

It's a Giacomel mandolin. He seems to really like them these days. He even imports them from Italy and sell them on his website.

Not out of tune at all it's the weird dischords that make this seem awkward to the ear. It's a symposium. They are flashing some leather.

I love these armchair critics here who shriek "out of tune!" It's called the "art of improvisation" and the "musical journey", not only are these men technical masters , they are true artists, not fearing the occasional "off" note! It's all jazz!
