- www.complete-dr... : A complete guide on how to steer using the 'Pull, Push;' steering technique. One of the safest methods of steering keeping better control of the car than some other methods. Please note demonstrating this steering method involved some 'dry steering' (Steering without moving) for the purpose of demonstration. Dry steering should always be avoided whilst driving under normal driving situations.

Very useful demonstration of full turns. Thanks. Can you also please demonstrate best way for handling steering wheel where the road has islands at short interval and there are park cars . That is, situations where that the car is meandering in s bends at close quarters at say 30mph. Look forward to sharing your expert tution
Use the same technique. For production cars it does everything, so there's really no need to use anything else. Hope that helps.

Just had my first ever driving lesson today. I really struggled with this and my instructor started shouting and yelling at me by that point I just completely went into shutdown mode and wanted to go home. My instructor is 80 years of age and was incredibly short tempted. Confidence is well and truly down the toilet.
nah thats not acceptable, im sorry you had to go through that. No one should screaming at a learning driver like that, especially it being ur first lesson. That instructor needs to go in the bin. Keep ur head up, you'll get your Ps soon dw!

Good video. In my opinion, this is the BEST method of steering a vehicle. Professional drivers, and police pursuit drivers use this method. Hand-over-hand method should be avoided.

The push-pull method is terrible for anything other than passing your test. crossing your arms allows you to give faster and smoother steering inputs. At long as you don't think your airbag is about to go off then crossing your arms is the safest way to do it.
@@jordanlazarus7345 I think you will find those claims are just old wives' tales, my friend: generally only learners and inexperienced drivers have problems with 'jerky inputs', and once they become proficient these disappear altogether. In my experience, exactly the same happens no matter how a beginner turns the wheel, but it doesn't take long to overcome it with either technique.
As for turning the wheel faster, definitely not true - for production cars at least: with push-pull the driver can apply _any amount of lock, in either direction, without removing the hands from the wheel;_ this means that _they are always in the ideal position to respond to changing needs._ This is not the case with any other steering method. It is, in fact, possible to turn the wheel every bit as fast as when crossing hands - and faster - for this very reason, plus it takes less effort.
To see what I mean, take a look at this video of a side-by-side comparison of the two over a slalom course. It starts at 02:25, and the video is at ruclips.net/video/pS3ECPrplKo/видео.html . Notice that the driver who is crossing hands is nearly having kittens trying to accomplish what the chap who is feeding the wheel does with ease. This is why push-pull is taught to all UK emergency drivers, who collectively have one of the best road safety records in the world. Some American police forces have abandoned hand-over-hand steering altogether, primarily because officers have been injured by airbags, but also because, after experimentation, they have found other techniques too slow for specialist manouevres. One example is the San José Police Department.
Evidence is therefore strong that the old chestnut about hand-over-hand being faster than push-pull is not only misleading, but the polar opposite of real life.

I cannot believe the push-pull steering would be succesful at a rapid correction steering situation.
Once you are skilled at it there are no issues steering rapidly under emergency situations.
+TehoTarve it is actualy safer if properly done. But it is Push-Pull. in an emergency situation you wont have the time to preset one hand at the top to pull down. I am an Emergency Vehicle Operation Course Instructor. And Push-Pull is the method taiught.
+John Ledesma Actually, i tried switching from my hand over hand to the pull push technique once and i almost got into an accident.. So am with TehoTarve since hand over hand are more universal than push and pull because hand over hand is the first technique taught by my driving instructor back in the 90s so its kinda hard for me to adapt to this so called new and improved safety steering style..
It is one method taught, and it's a method that isn't taught in any high performance driving school I'm aware of. I only see this stuff being taught by institutions teaching police and and emergency responders and no one can seem to articulate WHY it's a better approach.

I have done 3 lessons so far and I struggle with steering..so I'm going to try applying these techniques

Very good explanation and demonstration of the pull-push method. I would, however, have liked you to have explained that this was filmed in a simulator car otherwise you could be encouraging a lot of dry steering if learners think they can turn the s/w like this when the car is stationary!

You tell me which emergency avoidance steering the car had more control.
Alot of people seem to get quite irritated by the push pull method claiming it's not as safe because it restricts you when you need to make tight turns quickly in an emergency or otherwise. Nobody seems to be able to explain why the push pull method is safer, and this just adds to the annoyance and confusion. Well, let me explain in the simplest way possible why push pull is in fact the safest steering method: Everyone seems to neglect the fact that there is an AIR BAG IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STEERING WHEEL. What do you think is going to happen if it goes off and your arms are crossed over? Well... You'll probably end up being impaled by your own arms. At the very least, you'll get away with shattered arms and a broken rib cage.

@@RaySeagraveCompleteDriver you totally misunderstood my point. Driving should not be as complicated as you showed. You used 10 mins to show a complicated, outdated and, for most of the cases, unsafe way of driving, while the most efficient and correct way only takes one or two mins to explain. What a shame.

You'll get the idea with practice. Everybody does. Best of luck.
But there is one problem with push and pull steering: if you need to turn the steering wheel quikly, the car jiggles while turning. And in the worst case scenario, you could miss the corner entirely and drive off the road.

BEWARE OF THIS METHOD!!! this is not a safe method. you approach a blind corner, corner decreases in radius need to steer faster, CRASH!

Some might say this is a rare technique used outside driving schools. Those that know about advanced driving and how to control the car skilfully would however disagree.
"You will fail my training immediately if you drive push-and-pull like this video shows." From a senior driving instructor of Mercedes Benz and Daimler who trains engineers and customers on how to drive safely.

Like any new technique, it takes time to be proficient. Practicing it on a public roadway(?) for the first time is not the time to use the technique.
It is not the only way to drive, but it is prove. To be a safer, more efficient way to driver daily, especially in a panic situation.
It has limitations. But it works. But you have to learn the basics and start learning the technique progressively with low speed exercises and build up to faster and more dynamic situations, in a controlled environment.
Proper safe driving techniques are a perishable skill. If you don't strive to practice it daily, no one can use it in the time of need when they least expect it.

It's interesting how subjective steering technique is. Most professional driving instructors in Australia strongly discourage this method; when I learnt to drive and did a defensive driving course I was taught to always cross your hands, and to focus much more on where the car was going than how you were steering.
This technique is only one of many. In the UK this is the preferred method because it protects the airbag space for it to deploy. You will not fail a UK driving test if you use other methods (including hand over hand), providing that is that the car is fully under control. As a professional driver trainer and a person concerned about safest methods. I prefer this method as a safer habitual method of steering. Thanks for your comment..very useful.😊
+Ray Seagrave I've noticed that this method is popular in the UK. I've always thought that the airbag will force your hands and arm out of the way of your face. As well as my modern car with power steering, I've got a 1950s Jaguar that you really couldn't steer like this at low speeds, as the steering with radial tyres is very heavy.
+Nicholas Scarff don't think that would be the case. Given how fast the airbag deploys your hands or arms are in the way. Better they are fully out of the way.

+Ray Seagrave (Complete Driver) I've been in an accident where the airbag deploys. Admittedly I was the passenger, but the airbag is actually deflating by the time you actually hit it. And to be quite honest, if you're in an accident, you still get badly bruised and knocked about anyway. I'm not sure if you've ever used hand over hand, but when it's done properly, it's much much smoother then push pull and mush quicker too.
As a UK driving instructor I teach all methods of steering... Some are safer than others. I would never want anything in the way of an airbag... See from 1min 25secs comparing the two methods.

If you just put your car staitionary in parking lot, you can steer the wheel by your feet, face, or any other part of your body.

I learn my pupils to use the wheel as you where draw a roap through the car on the top of the wheel. With the hands cross over of course...I was visiting the Metropolitan Policeschool in London, and they used your methods. I am a driverinstructor from Norway, and we drived around this police guys... We are known of this slippery grounds, and we uses other methodes. They did'n have a chanse... (haha).

DecrepitOrigin888 to steer a car by standing on the same spot without running. That causes stress in tires and you'll see a round tire mark form on the ground below. That is the tire grinding against the tarmac.
Ask The Norwegians how to drive on slippery grounds... We have to take all our pupils on a slippery grounds course...Not with water and pumpup tires, but the real thing...! But I liked your video anyway...! Thanks!
