The DVD part of my JVC combo wasn't working. That happened years ago when my son was about 3 years old and he stuffed 2 DVDs in the slot. Now he is 7 and obsessed with technology (he is on the autism spectrum) he kept asking me to try and fix the DVD (by the way we have another DVD player and a bluray player as well). I finally decided to humor him and came across this video. Used the qtip on the laser and... IT WORKS! Thank you.

My VCR ended up being a mechanical issue, but thanks for the tutorial, I fixed another one I bought, and now the DVD players repaired.

also when your down with the vhs tape , use a vhs rewinder , first off you'll be preserving the gears and belts in the VCR portion of the player for quite a long time .
I worked and managed a repair shop, I thought it was a bit crazy when I learned shops just use paper to clean the heads. Just get some printer paper and soak it with alcohol and press it up against the video and slowly turn it. Rubbing alcohol has too much water in it, doesn't clean very well so shop around the drug stores for 91 or 99% alcohol or buy from a parts place.
My vhs player is almost exactly like this one but I have a problem. When I take the tape out, it gets stuck. Like the tape part of it doesn't come off of the spinning things when the casette is pushed out. Any idea how to fix this?
If you watch this video, it is very good but NEVER CLEAN A VHS VCR HEAD DRUM WITH A CUE TIP. Never clean head drums with something that has fibers like cotton or cue tips. It can damage the heads. The best way to clean head drums is with a paper soaked with alchool. Nothing works best than that.

Had it working and when I added lube I spun one of the gears ever so slightly and now the gearing is off track and won't accept vhs tapes.

Trying to finalize a disc on old Magnavox VCR/DVD recorder MRV700BR/17. Machine says disc if finalized but it wont play on a different machine so it does not recognize a finalization. Any help is appreciated.

I found the solution to unlock the "lock" feature on the Sony SLV-D 350P. Push the "pause" and "stop" buttons at the same time and then select "DVD" That should do it.

I got my vcr working but it won't change speed on the taps that were taped at a slow speed. Any idea how to fix that?
Is there a way that I can send a picture of what appears on the screen when I try to play my dvd-v 9800 samsung- the vcr part of it? It's just a lot of jumpy squiggly lines? I've thoroughly cleaned the machine. Everything else works good, audio is great.
If you’ve got lots of tapes that you’re going to be watching or recording onto don’t think that when the heads are worn out that’s it. If you can find spares they are relatively inexpensive although you might be able to pick, up a used but good replacement recorder on eBay for less. You will have to take your chance. Heads are easy to fit as well. You might need a “Head Puller”. But if you are careful you can usually remove them using fingers only.

Thanks. I like the tips you have on your vids. I have a int that I learned back when the vcr was popular. I still have mine, i just don'tuse it much. The q-tip is handy but you need to worry about lint. They sell special lint free cloths for this, but you probably already have a ready supply of them. Paper coffee filters for drip coffee makes are lint free! This is handy for cleaning lenses too. Good luck.

I have to pry my audio+video plugs to get a decent reception? I replaced the wires still same problem. Should i try replacing the plugs on the VCR

My DVD/VCR combo takes a disc or tape, but won't play and won't spit out the disc or VHS tape. I have to unplug it completely for it to spit the stuff out, is there anything I can do to fix it?
I have a Sanyo VWM-950 vcr that won’t take the tape in. I insert it and it won’t go in all the way. It sticks out like half an inch and resists going in. There’s also a “tape in” light that is lit with nothing in the vcr. I’m not sure what to do.
I have a 1984 Quasar Model# VH5041XW when i press the play button it plays for a few second then stops for no reason same thing with rewind and fast forward what could the problem be?

Have a VHS built into my AKAI TV-I have the tape out-however the VHS will not shut down-TV will not shut off. Any ideas?
When I put my tape in the machine it grabs the tape and does not process so when I try to eject, it grabs and won't let go of the tape. I have to manually rewind the tape. What makes it grab all the time? I have an Emerson VCR it has "19 micron head" "DA-4Head Digital Tracking/quick play" if that helps.

Hey I know this is a few years late but recently we tried to watch some old vhs tapes and the rewind function works, the tape moves but when we press play the message “A-Er” comes up and it doesn’t show anything. Do you know how to fix this? Thank you

I can play both VHS and DVD discs, but now I can't convert my VHS tapes to DVD. Doesn't read. It could be that some dust has gotten into the recording head of the DVD. I am stuck and would love to fix it myself. Fort Mill, SC
Try A cleaning CD. They are cheap and will clean the head with zero effort from you. Just stick it in, and turn it on. The spin wipes the head clean. could also be a capacitor issue. If there isn't enough current to drive the write level on the laser...just a _wild_ guess though.

Hello I have VCR and most of the time it works fine except sometimes I lose the picture and sound completely and just get a black screen. Then it comes back on after a few seconds. I'm guessing this means there is a loose connection, but can anyone tell me what connection I should be looking at inside? I've checked my rca phono leads and they are not the problem.
Any help or advice would be appreciated!
My SD-V296KU DVD/Video has no sound - everything else works.. I don't think I have the wiring right- I have 3 wire connections plus the power cord. It must be something simple, but nothing is simple for me - can you help

samsung dvd -v9800 combow works well but has snow and skips on vsr .!
JVC had this auto picture. only used it for like 5 days brother was gonna toss it. recorded soem difficult to track tapes. 3 tapes left suddenly the rubber roller is now rolling opposite. actually when the tape is first inserted it simply shuts the whole machine down. I hit eject the tape icon blinks. If I hit POWER thats just a bad idea. because in idle mode not play, FF or RW, the roller runs but the capatan? is running in the wrong direction which the rubber roller spins on thus a mobile tape starts rolling around that rubber roller and then into the machine and it never stops until it jams. Don't know why this is. Ordered another JVC model of the same model off ebay but still irritated not knowing why that roller is rolling opposite let alone shuts all the way down to begin with. and I know enough never to use a qtip on the head. only certain cleaners do I do so with the head.
I have taken an old vcr apart and cleaned the rollers and video head with acohol and it plays the video but the audio sucks very low and a humming.
My Hitachi VRC/DVD player will not eject the VHS tape ..I push the on button and the player comes on for about 10 to 15 sec then turns itself off any suggestions ? ?I removed the Tape and cleaned all the heads with alcohol and rolled the gear put the tape back in it started to play than stop and turned itself off and tape will not eject ? used different tapes ...I did this several times to no avail ....HELP

it's not good to use Qtips on vcr heads the fibers from the qtip can get into the video heads & clog or damage them. the black lines on the video drum are the heads you can count how many there are. on that vcr it should be four
my vcr light stays on when you turn the tv off then when you turn the tv on it will go out but I have c cable box and it won't let me program any channels on it

Snow = RF noise. What you are watching is not the VCR at all, but rather a channel. Combination TVs have a separate "channel" for VCR. When you channel down on a TV/VCR combo below channel 2, it should show a blue screen for the VCR, or perhaps a blank screen. The VCR doesn't have an optic eye, but rather a large metal cylinder which contains 4-6 electromagnetic coils. This is tilted slightly and is a very lustrous shiny silver color. it is impossible to miss once you know what to look for. If you have no tape in there and just push the flap in front and shine a light inside you'll see it in the lower middle, tilted to the left and sticking up.
If you are worried about it being dirty, and don't want to take the machine apart, I would recommend a simple VHS cleaning tape. They are around 7$ US and will do the job nicely. However, what you have described is not being in the VCR mode on the TV itself, and trying to pick up analog channels which aren't there anymore. So all you get is snow.

@@Thesleepypineapple Ya, that is a tough one to diagnose from afar... it could be that the video signal is not being amplified off of the tape, and thus no usable signal is being generated. A TV repair shop should be able to quickly repair that. Alternately, you could go through the entire video signal path and check the signal with an oscilloscope/curve tracer until you find the problem component. I say this because the audio and video signals are processed separately in VCRs.
@zimbabwean If you wanted to blindly repair it with no knowledge, a good "hail mary" approach is just to replace all the electrolytic capacitors in the unit. That may or may not fix it...it could be a transistor that failed. However, a failed capacitor is more likely. Sometimes they are obvious in that the top of the can is bulging, but I find that this isn't always the case. If you can identify where the video signal processing is being done(by tracing backward from the video signal output) then you can simply replace all the capacitors in that line of circuitry.
@@peterlamont647 my Grundig vcr (no combo) also does that audio being put out the audio out jacks but not out of the scart or rf cable so head drum must be fine. When I plug it into the other audio output than it makes crackling sound when I turn up the volume. Capacitors?

I have also seen it is better to use denatured alcohol because rubbing alcohol has oils in it that could cause further damage. Any thoughts on this?
Ya, don't put oil in your rubbing alcohol. It certainly doesn't come with any from the manufacturer.

Component video is not digital. Is just a higher resolution analog signal.
Much sager is to use a clean sheet of printer paper. I use to work in a shop and found out this is the way the techs do it. Soak a piece of paper in pure alcohol and press it against the head and slowly turn it. Don't move it up and down just press it firmly against the head to clean it.
make sure it's an old magazine too with lots of color printing on it!
when I attended a class held by CEMA Consumer Electronics Manufacturer's Association for VCR repair the teacher demonstrated how to clean the video heads. I don't think there was any printer paper handy so he took out a business card and used the back side of it to clean the heads.
I seem to recall the service manuals saying to use chamois swabs but I never saw anyone use them.
please don't criticize, I was taught this method in a CEMA class they teach professional techs. I watched the teacher do it and no one complained. And I have seen professional techs do it this way.
Thanks for the video. I'm having trouble with my JVC DVD/VHS recorder combo. Everything on the DVD end works fine, playback etc, but I can't get the picture/sound to play from a VHS. The time progression shows in the little window like its playing, but no picture/sound playback. It almost seems like an input issue, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?
Run it with the lid off and see if the play head is spinning. grease everything up.

I have a Durabrand DBDVR01 DVDR-VCR Combo which only spins the VCR head after plugging in the power cord. No LEDs, no display, buttons don't react. I measured the voltages of the power supply, they are fine. I can't see blown caps and no damage either. From here I'm stuck, can't find a service manual or any data sheet. Would you have an idea where to look for
Have you tried tracing the voltages _from_ the power supply? Clearly it sounds like the PSU is fine, but something else on the power rail leading up to the other modules is failing. I'd start at the front panel power rail and check voltage on that...and around the front panel circuitry. With no front panel functionality, this should fit all of your symptoms. There might be just one failed component on that module.
After being stored in my closet, my sanyo vwm-385 is stuck on record..when powered on the record red light is just blinking and I cannot make it do anything..any suggestions?
The best thing i can reccomend is to take it apart and see if the button is stuck. Thats the only thing i can think of.
Wow, yikes that is a weird problem...I don't know if anyone could diagnose something so odd and specific from so far away. Take it to a repair shop, that's what those guys do all day long!
We have a vcr/dvd player that plays video but will not play discs. When we use the console or the remote and press DVD, the yellow lighted "dvd" on the front screen does not illuminate; only "vcr" is illuminated; it won't switch from tape to disc. How to fix this? Hubby getting irritated he cannot play movie discs. Movies he's only seen a zillion times. :)

Grease! Lots of grease!!!!!! put grease all over everything (not the heads obviously). That ought to fix it.

Good lord, don't tell people to use a Q-tip or toilet paper on a video head. Get some chamois swabs and do it correctly.
NEVER, NEVER EVER....use Q-tips, or like objects, on video heads. They are very delicate objects and easily damaged. You can by alcohol pads at drug stores, try those for cleaning. Note when cleaning make sure that the heads are not revolving.
Loose cotton + 1800 RPM = Disaster. [edit: Or a really cool new loom design...]

Don't use qtips
in my vhs player,,,the cassette goes inside then the to rollers take the tape to vhs head...but the tape doesnt play....the wheels doesn't run..what may be the problem???????
Check voltage to the motor. If there is voltage, then grease that motor. Don't get any grease on the head itself...only the drive motor. It is probably gummed up.

If it won't automatically eject, get a paperclip and there should be a hole around the eject door area to stick the paperclip in gently, which will allow the door to open slightly then you can gently pull the tray open all the way to remove the dvd.
What if you need to adjust the potentiometer setting?
Put a multimeter across it first to see what the setting was before you move anything. Then write down the ohms. That way if if figure out it wasn't a trim pot, you'll at least know where it was. Try greasing and manual spin everything instead. It worked at that setting from the factory, so it should work now.
