- The 1967 Newark riots was one of 159 race riots that swept cities in the United States during the "Long Hot Summer of 1967". This riot occurred in the city of Newark, New Jersey, between July 12 and July 17, 1967. Over the four days of rioting, looting, and property destruction, 26 people died and hundreds were injured.
THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK
No. But good point out.
@@johnantonescu5096 yes. Can't wait
@@684avatar hello from the future. Movie came out. It’s good
Dude, ive been on youtube for over 15 years and you must be in my top 5 most interesting channels. You really get us to live in those times.
I was born in Newark New Jersey... When the riots began I was only six years old! So good to see this video so I can educate myself! Never knew the whole story! Thank you!
I like your channel very much. It is a great history lesson, a factual and documented one.
Many thanks, Hezakya!
I can't believe this channel has only 28K subs. So much rare footage. Great music too.
Is that Springfield ave ?
@@Hborn was Springfield avenue will not come back until gentrification
THEY CAN'T KEEP HEZAKYA DOWN!!!!
I love history! Thanks again Hez 💯
Good to see you back Hezakya. Spreading that knowledge and history they try to bury from us.
@NEWARK BRICKS who do you think?
They really did.
What street is that in the beginning
There are buildings in Newark that are still destroyed historical land marks from 1967 and the atmosphere in that city is still the same!
First 10 mins of this is just pure brilliance.
That man at the end...bro..
He was on point
Newark born and raised...like myself
My favorite part - 18:04. RIP Amiri Baraka. Used to live in Newark. Met his son, the mayor, Ras Baraka, a couple of times.
Awesome shit once again hez.... where do you acquire this type of never before seen footage. ... great stuff. ..
Good to see the one back. I'm a fan. That real content. Videos are cold. That Ronald regan in the south. Bronx a few years back was fire
The music at the beginning is perfect....
Everybody was so well-spoken and level-headed, even on such a powerful topic
Nichole Taggart Yeah I noticed no F bombs from anyone.
So u saying back ppl are not well spoken or are u surprised we are well spoken that's a racial comment in itself
Agree. Each generation loses more and more simple abilities to articulate themselves and be rational in their discussion it seems. The more and more we are glued to a cell phone or tablet or gaming device, or how many likes or dislikes we get on social media, the less real communication skills we are able to cultivate as individuals. It's sad.
Wow!!! I’m 63 years old born and raised in newark, Nj I remember as a kid looking past the furniture stacked up in the windows of my house my mother pushing my head down I wanted to see the tanks. Until recently I had no idea Ras baraka was so instrumental in the human rights movement hell of a man along with Malcolm X thanks for posting.
I'm only 45 but been in newark my whole life
52 years later
Nothing has changed
Give the black men jobs not give out millions to other countries
Yea I never understood that, not only with the government, but with some black celebrities. White ones too actually. Like Oprah’s school in Africa, why not a girls school in the states, if you want to build a legacy, create an academy where m/f alumni are changing the world long after you’re departed -or just a girls school like she ended up doin in SA.
Maybe build a sports and entertainment complex in Chicago or wherever, with a video and music studio, computers, where kids and young adults are given free or discounted admittance for maintaining an adequate GPA in school/ college and a relatively clean record. The city or federal government might subsidize a thing like that, especially with a big name like Jay Z and Bill Gates, or Elon Musk -idk.
You’d get major brownie points with the America public -you’d be their darling -and that’s got some power. Plus, it’s a drop in the bucket for these hundred millionaires, and multi-billionaires, with enormous trusts and charitable foundations.
Skibadibop-yea! Skitskatskatache definitely but the problem with the rich is no matter how much money they have their never satisfied
Don Dressel I know, for many at least. They say that Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, and a few other mega rich have pledged to donate nearly all their money upon their deaths.
Still, Jay-z for instance, could get together his many celebrity and magnate friends, and could actually do some good for Chicago, Detroit,or Cleveland. Even Brooklyn, where Jay hails from and is part owner in Barclays, has seen an unprecedented spike in crime and murder this year.
Set up a low income housing scheme, property is certainly available -and cheap; so the government would likely be amiable to such an idea. With that type of social currency, someone like Jay-z could become Mayor Shawn Carter within a decade or so. Maybe even Senator or higher, he already has mainstream legitimacy. Instead it’s always investing in fashion or sports. A record label, or a luxury car customization line -something which may be profitable -but does little good and is quickly forgotten. A school or monument however, a library or community center can rejuvenate a community; that is something that can remain for centuries, and turn a family to a dynasty.
IDk, I don’t mean to be down on Jay-z, whenever I see him interviewed he seems like a nice enough guy. He likely does charitable things that I don’t even know about, but it’d be cool to see one of these celebrities or entrepreneurs -the ones constantly in the public eye -do something for poverty in America, regardless of the color of their skin or politics.
@@skibadibop-yeaskitskatskat4454 Because they don't want them to be educated. Simple as that.
Be the change you so desperately want, instead of whining about it. That's why nothing has changed. The colored people in this video didn't just sit there, they made shit happen which lead to the civil Rights movement only a year later...
oh yes i remember those days! i'm still here though threw the thick and thin newark new jersey will always be my home in 2019!
This channel is everything!
Sadly 53 years later Newark still struggles with poverty and crime...
Alejandro Fallas along with a declining population and shrinking tax base.

Atleast it is not Camden.Parts of Brick City is gentrifed like NYC across the river
The state troopers used more ammo that week than necessary. Way more. I can't remember the number but if someone can look it up you'll be shocked. The Newark cops were not nearly as aggressive and handled things in a much less violent manner.
I believe if the state police and the national guard were not called in by the Newark political leaders than this riot would not have been as bad.
This is great content!!!
I was there - July, 1967.
You know where Springfield ave and magnolia St at?
Best content on RUclips. Easily
Always has the best music❤❤ where do you finds these tombs of primary film material? Very important history
At 27:45 when the reporter is talking to Mr Thomas and his wife is stuck in the middle is disturbing. They're talking right through her like she's not even there. To be seen but not to be heard.
Seems worse today
Some things never change it seems to be getting worse
sadly it is.
Newark might be surpassed by rapidly revitalizing, booming Jersey City as the largest city in New Jersey.
The streets certainly were in better condition...
Wow! Newark looks crazy different, compared to now. Great videos.
Damn, was that last guy Cory Booker's father? That was some killer wisdom at the end.
donsknots if it is it didn’t get passed down
Cory Booker and wisdom in the same sentence?🤣🤣🤣🤣
The offspring are nothing like their fathers. They just want to get what they can.
Yo Dove fits perfectly with this intro!
Awesome music, what is it? Great footage.
see this[the wall]]]rodger waters lives on fore freedom.
The tune is by Cymande, called Dove... From '72 I believe.. awesome band
Them building's burning what street is that?
What is the name of the song at the beginning. It just lures you in ...
Dove by Cymande
Wow this so fascinating to watch, this is the southward the area I grew up in, just moved from there about 2 years ago.

This riot in Newark appears to be more a police action than a full scale riot.
Muhammad Ali was correct in refusing to go to Vietnam we were in a war zone at home and things have not changed.
Here during Quarantine 2020,....
Wow, we used to wear this track out on the dance floor at the underground clubs in NYC, Cymande - "Dove". Hez be killin' the docs with the backing tracks. Love it.
I lived on 3rd Avenue and Broadway. My dad was a cop. I was 7.
This music really compliments this video. Makes me feel like I'm right there! I wonder who's playing it?😐

Here in 2020. Things are still the same. Smh !!!!!
I’m tryna figure out which area is the area today
Doe Breezy Most of the footage is on Springfield Ave. Around bergen st I saw some on Clinton Avenue. Not sure if you know that the man who was speaking at the meeting with the bandage was Leroy Jones who changed his name to Amri Barraka whose son is the Mayor of Newark Ras Barraka. He was beaten by the police and charged with some bogus charges and given a 50 thousand dollar bail in 1967.
Them building's burning what street is that?
Incredible choreography. Song at 25:11?
Right now in the year of 2,022 New Orleans, Louisiana is a whole lot more deadlier than Newark, New Jersey. When I first drove out to New Orleans,Louisiana, I stayed out in the N. O., LA. for a two week visit. You can feel the danger and sense the dangerous vibe of the City of New Orleans when you go out there to visit the town of New Orleans. The City of Newark is not even on The Top 50 Murder Capitals of The World List. It is Detroit,Ml., Saint Louis,Missouri, Baltimore,Maryland, and New Orleans, LA. that are all on that Top 50 Homicide Capital of The World List. I have been to Detroit & Saint Louis, MO. very frequently for over 25 years now(both of those Midwest Cities are even more deadlier than New Orleans). Baltimore is a lot worse than New Orleans is right now. I would rather reside in the City of Newark rather than to reside in the Cities of Saint Louis,Detroit, Baltimore,or New Orleans.
Lot of family there~ GRandmother was born there!
Of course they keep the protesters in poor urban neighborhoods. I wonder if the marchers in this video were from Montclair and other underclass towns.
Montclair underclass? They have 10 million dollar mansions side by side. It’s even called Upper Montclair...🤣🤣🤣
2020?
The democrats were in charge of the city government as well as the state government... both entities directed the national guard and the newark pd to use force in the in streets. With the help of the Newark Housing Authority they closed off the black communities by building the city jail in the heart of their neighborhood. The democrats are still to blame in my opinion for the divisions today. I was 20 years old living in Newark when all of this occured. There are many layers to this tragic story...they have yet to be uncovered.
Wow great footage
Can`t believe the armed forces took over the city like that!
First street up Stratford place, most dangerous block in the city now still, drug infested.
Anyone know what happen to Joe Bass? The kid that was wounded.
I knew a Leroy McKnight. I’m thinking one of the bass brothers from 88 was a police a mean mofo to.
So many cool cars!!
Why they didn't teach us this in school my mom and grandparents told me about the riots
People who won’t treat you right won’t teach you right. Malcolm X.
Whenever I traveled through Newark, I was always on the bus. We lived in Brooklyn; never forgot those trips through the Holland tunnel!🤫
@@robertwalker7010 Malcolm X who was murdered by a couple of Black Muslims who evidently didn't like what he was teaching by the way.
Is that amiri Barack speaking at the podium. ...
23:28 that man sounds like morgan Freeman. Wow what a great voice
Damn, 2 ads just played, before this video started?
I hope Google monetizes your channel!! There's absolutely no reason for them not to.
Everything you post aired on television at one time or another.
The ads come from the Musical interludes....the song publishers get paid if I use their tunes. I don't. But it's cool...because the music makes the videos. So I don't mind paying
Ps the producers dont have the answers its more of the same old same old but no solutions
Essex county goes from the poorest neighborhoods to some of the wealthiest individuals in New Jersey 20 years Federal auditor for the police and the schools under State patrol Wonder what the hell that it is the money is back not the white people
God bless Michael Imperiale
I had an opportunity to invest time today in doing something positive. The struggle to outline address and ask for a balance to the social inequities still remains in the forefront of my thoughts today was for my momma she would want to know that I have attempted to do something along the way to help
"Dove"🕊 - Cymande at 0:00
Wow, the brotha that was talking, about 16 minutes in, revealed something very important - he talked about "snipers on rooftops" being used to justify police violence against the poor black community.
This must have worked very well for the state, because they've used this same tactic, time and again, overseas when they want to instigate a violent coup d'etat against a government they don't like. 2002 in Venezuela, 2011 in Damascus, 2014 in Ukraine, and last year, 2021 in Lebanon.
Amiri Baraka is an agitation himself. With his pristine bandage for the cameras.
Always a smooth move, Ex-lax, when you tear up your own community.
The people at that time couldn't take it anymore and the city of Newark exploded in the summer of 67....
Poor whitney houston was born during this time she was just 1 years old when this happend
She was born in 1963 .. what math are you using ? I agree this is traumatic
She actually grew up in East Orange.

All I see is refusal to take accountability for unreasonable actions. Excuses, excuses. Here's a place to start; BEHAVE.
