這首作品是作曲家盧亮輝先生繼《春》、《夏》之後，又一部以「四季」為主題所創作的國樂作品，於1982年7月23日在香港創作完成，1986年曾再度修改，是作者於1977年至1986年間任香港中樂團全職樂師時，受香港中樂團委約創作的作品。當時作者有意圖把「四季」為主題的作品逐步完成，而為了和《春》、《夏》兩首作品在速度上和表現上有所對比，在構思上用了慢板和小調的調式來表現那種「秋風瑟瑟、落葉飄零的情景和飄泊不安的憂傷心情，以及對現實生活的悵望」。全曲以帶再現的三部曲式發展而成：
I. 「秋風瑟瑟」－引子開始用低音樂器的撥弦、弦樂的顫弓、打擊組特殊的音響（如用弓在吊鈸上拉奏）、鋼片琴和古箏六全音階的運用等，來營造出秋風瑟瑟、落葉飄零的情景；然後由簫、巴烏、曲笛及笙分別奏出一段冷漠的旋律，引進第一部份具有憂傷、傾訴的一段主題。
II. 「秋之歌」－經過不斷引伸和發展而進入第二部份，此段是一個憂鬱而帶有點激動性質的展開性段落，速度略自由，表現對現實生活的探索和追溯，最後無奈的悵望。
III. 「往事回味」－接著是帶有再現的第三部份的出現，更加深了那種具有憂傷、傾訴的第一部份主題， 最後一個人在黑暗中孤獨地徘徊。

Autumn is the third movement of composer LO Leung-Fai’s “The Four Seasons” , following Spring and Summer. It was commissioned by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra when LO was a full-time musician with the orchestra from 1977 to 1986. Autumn was completed in Hong Kong on July 23, 1982 and was revised in 1986.
At the time, the composer had intended to complete “The Four Seasons” gradually. In order to distinguish Autumn from the previous two movements in terms of tempo and performance, LO set the work in minor key and Adagio mode. The result was a piece that captures the melancholy scene of falling leaves blowing in the autumn wind, and expresses the sadness of people who wander around restlessly and are frustrated by the reality of life. The movement is composed of three parts:
The first part, “Autumn’s Chill,” uses various musical techniques to paint the melancholy scene of leaves falling in the cold autumn wind. The techniques include Plucking (bass instruments), Tremolo (bowed string instruments), drawing a bow across a suspended Cymbal (percussion instruments), and techniques associated with playing the celesta and the Chinese zither. That is followed by a series of “indifferent melodies” played by Xiao, Bawu, Qudi and Sheng that highlight the themes of sorrow and companionship.
The second part, “Song of Autumn,” has a somewhat free tempo and conveys a gloomy and agitating atmosphere. It depicts the frustration of people who explore and seek the meaning of life, only to be disappointed in the end.
The third part, “Recollection of the Past,” portrays people wandering alone in the dark. It repeats and intensifies the feeling of sadness and the need for someone to confide in, as highlighted in the first part.
