Thanks for posting this even though it was a loss. As a white belt considering joining a master's lightweight comp myself; it's intimidating and almost exhausting watching all the "I won gold on my first week of doing bjj" videos. This just felt very real and enjoyable - again - even though it was ultimately a loss. Subscribed!
Think about it this way, in any given tournament 50% of the people do not progress past the first round. Even without taking any medals, if you win just one match then you’ve already done better than half of the people who showed up that day. Besides, even if you win nothing, competing expedites your progress and so you have nothing to lose from stepping on the mats.
Good match from both! The guy in the blue had a wicked guard passing technique that I hope to develop. I also love that he was thinking Ezekiel at the finish. The guy in black did a great job getting to mount, but he struggled to hold it and got caught with a trap and roll. Then came that wicked guard pass again. Lots of good stuff from both in this match.
I recently did my first master event as well (no-gi) I brought home bronze and didn’t score a single jiu jitsu point. 😂 i scored all single leg takedowns got swept stood up and scored another single leg! Was pretty nervous before hand and was super happy afterwards. Congrats on competing and keep up the good work
You have a wrestling background? How long in learning jujutsu, then go to your 1st tournament? How many matches? Did you go to another one? Are you still doing jujutsu? Thanks for your post and time ✔️
😅😅 gets the takedown and pass but then immediately goes into his guard. I had my first tournament earlier this month and I did this twice. I also got mount and when we reset back in the middle, I gave my opponent half guard. Definitely was all over the place

Nice stuff from both of you. The coach was brilliant as well so calm clear and good instructions
Good match! Really enjoyed the calm and positive coaching
This coach is seriously zen, many could learn from this example

The Ezeek is soooo sneaky! Good roll, man. I hope I do even as well as you.

Are there any leagues where the Ezekiel is illegal?
I think only illegal at certain age groups, like youth/etc.

I think coaching should be banned in these matches. It’s a contest between 2 athletes. Nobody wants to hear from the sideline experts
The athletes do.
When I am rolling I actually get really annoyed by coaching. Just let me do my thing, stop shouting play by play from side lines. Just me I guess.
That's valid, i've got terrible confidence in comp setting and it's really helpful to me.
Hey Matt would you wear a nylon windbreaker jacket as we fight sometime
