One of the most beautiful songs ever written, sung by a lady with an explicit voice. I was lucky enough to see her perform on a couple of occasions in the sixties. Eat your heart out, Adele.
and to think, Richard Rodgers, had them both, How lucky Mr.Rodgers, was, I have no doubt that both Hart and Hammerstein, found Mr Rodgers, a great Composers.....
The Broadway 1939 lyric as originally written was even more hair raising...and has been revised ever since-- "Lost my heart, but what of it? My mistake, I agree. He's a laugh, but I love it because the laugh's on me."
Yeah man, this is one of the things I miss most about that bygone age. The ability of lyricists like Lorenz Hart, Ira Gershwin, and so many others to write lyrics that were sophisticated, thoroughly conversational, yet completely true to the very particular emotion being painted by the composer. The first half of the twentieth century was a heroic time in American song, truly a golden age.
Matthew Hubbard so I listened to this for the first time when I was 16 and in love for the first time in a British film called the history boys. But it only featured first half of this song. only now, 15 years later; I listen to the second half: “wise at last; my eyes at last; are cutting you down to your size at last.” This woman was a goddess
SUBLIME. Had to stop in my tracks and listen to the whole song because my ears demanded it. Her vocal intonations were mesmerizing and enveloped me. She is the creme de la creme, the cat's pyjamas. The lyrics are too funny. Total enraptured beauty, that's Ella and this song.
That is what is so wonderful about this genre. The music can because of the extremely masterful musicianship. Her vocals are nice too!! Only my favorite.
A seven minute song with the most incredible lyrics, sung by the best female vocalist in history. We will never hear something like this ever again. It's sad to watch our country, our economy, and our values sink into oblivion knowing we'll never have this pinnacle of musical perfection ever produce any more but to know we still have what she did is still wonderful.
Y'know what? I've searched for years for anyone else who's recorded this same song, the FULL SEVEN MINUTES FIFTEEN SECONDS. I have yet to find any. Yes, there's other recordings. Doris Day, about 2 m 42 s. Lady Gaga/Tony Bennet, 3 m 20 s. Kristin Chenoweth, 5 m. Linda Ronstadt, 4 m 26 s. And it goes on. Almost anyone who's a good singer has done this song, especially if its in their genre. Never ever have I seen anyone else do the FULL 7 m 15 s. It would be really fabulous if someone could do this. I'm not really up to date on who's up & coming and such. My music tastes pretty much stop mid 70s. I mostly focus on country/bluegrass now (old and new) Huh, just had a random remembering. Dolly Parton has not covered this song. Well didn't realize I'd typed this much... if you get this far, thanks for "listening". Gonna say gnite.
Ella Fitzgerald's voice gives me goose bumps. Roger's & Hart could have no greater tribute than to have her voice singing their song with such remarkable clarity & exquisite tone. She was our national treasure.
This is such a beautiful song, there is so much kindness in her voice it makes you happy and sad at the same time... I had tears of joy while listening to this...
I think i finally understand now... When i listened to other music it felt so empty insife of me. As if there was a hole in there. But after listening to Ella.. there's an urge to keep listening to her... The way her voice touches your heart... The way your emotions are stirred, and u feel so lifted.. beautiful...
Sarah Vaughn is in the same league as Ella. They are the two best female (jazz) singers in history. Carmen McCrae was also great; also, Betty Carter was pretty good.
La voce di Ella è una voce assolutamente unica e diversa dalle altre cantanti di colore, seppur altrettanto brave.Se chiudi gli occhi ascolti una voce cristallina e bianca. Questa cosa mi ha sempre impressionato.
Ella's artistry was the definition of vocal perfection. Very few singers matched her. I really love the line about "horizontally speaking." This song and Ella's rendition is pure joy.
How could anyone listen to this and hit the "dislike" button? Apparently, some people don't appreciate raw talent when they're exposed to it. I feel bad for them.
Not only must you not "like" the song, you've got to entirely skip the "maybe it's not so bad" thoughts and slide on into the negative. There are lots of songs that I don't like at all, but refuse to slap with a thumbs down because I do recognize that there is something of value present in them all. Well, I guess it's easier to tear something down than to build it up, or like you said, "don't appreciate... talent." These are the non-thinkers I avoid. And, I give TWO thumbs up to this marvelous work!
This fits my situation 100%, but I still can't let go, so I listen again and again, but it still doesn't sink in. I'm just going to keep listening until the right one comes along and he better like jazz.
Fits mine too... Except my husband died on me ... Got himself killed in an accident it's been 2 years but I still can't shake it... I'm F for life and I'm 28 years old ... Ill never have a child ill never have a life... But Ella speaks to the heart!
Sure she does, but so do you. Terribly sorry for your loss, but you're not F for life, you know? You'll have a child and a life, just as soon as it's all over. And it will be, one day. I'll say a prayer for you. Bon courage from France.
@@humphreyblogut672 You nailed it. Interchanging words and wicked double entendre was Richard Rodger's first lyricist's specialty. Porter borrowed that trick from H art--not the other way around. Lerner (mentored by hart) borrowed it in My Fair Lady--"Budapest..Never met a Ruder Pest.."
I have heard this song many times. Today I listened to it again on my MP3 player. It hit me between the eyes. Played it here on you tube and it knock me out. By the end of the song I had tears in my eyes. Why? Why? It is magic, that is why.
It's early 2023 now and here I am, crying tears of joy and sadness, having been touched yet again by this Godliest of expressive voices that jazz ever had. May she keep spreading her love forever!
Whenever I want to hear the definitive version of a song, I search RUclips for Ella's version, and she always delivers. I've never heard those lyrics before. Reminds me of my father. I was born in1957, but I remember him sitting and snapping his fingers to Sinatra and big bands. He was a WWII veteran and a police officer when I was born. He was for 28 years and Chief for 11 of them. I was daddy's little girl andadored him. The best man I've ever known. He passed in 2008 and I miss him more than words can say. This song is so beautiful and her Ella is magnificent. Chills and tears
Such a beautiful complex and mellow voice Miss Ella had....listening to her was like being carried along on a gentle stream..... I was born in 1969 and have been listening to her since I was a young child, thankfully being raised by older relatives her who recognized her talents and shared "old time" music even with the kids in our family 💜 🦋💜🦋💜🦋💜🦋💜🦋
If ever I get that feeling that the world is coming apart at the seams, I listen to Ella and know full well there must be a God who takes pity on us all and gives us this magic in our lives.
One of my Ella faves along with All the Things you Are and These Foolish Things. Lots of singers have sang this standard yet Ella owns it. Every word in clear and perfect diction, impeccable timing she makes the longer words easy and fun.
This song right here is beyond phenomenal and the stages of twin flame soulmate love she eloquently but effortlessly describes is bittersweet heartbreaking heroically finally triumphant...all at the same time...WELL DONE
Ella my all time favourite! Never knew there was so many (naughty) extra verses to Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, and I've been singing it since I was a child and I'm now 68!
I saw Ella twice at the FreeTrade Hall in Manchester. A guy called Eldridge on trumpet did the first half, but it was clear all the packed audience were just itching for Ella and the second half.. The house erupted when she came on singing “Give me the simple life “. The second time I saw her ,pianist Oscar Peterson supported her. That was in the 70s and how privileged I feel to have witnessed such perfection. Many have tried to copy her, but none have come even close.

That extra 'air' she developed in her voice just melts you. This is a great showcase of that. Incredible.
SUBLIME. Had to stop in my tracks and listen to the whole song because my ears demanded it. Her vocal intonations were mesmerizing and enveloped me. She is the creme de la creme, the cat's pyjamas. The lyrics are too funny. Total enraptured beauty, that's Ella and this song.
That is true ,the tunes plays over and over in my head for days sometimes ,she is the greatest of all time ,I really do enjoy listening to Ella ❤
"First Lady of Song". Her diction - and I mean every word - was spot on. I heard her as much through the 💓 than thru my ears. Love you always Ella.
Didn't really need the sub-titles
Okay so no one's gonna talk about the awesome Piano playing?
Bestial...por un momento pensé que estoy en 1944
It's up to you then, buddy!
I mostly focus on country/bluegrass now (old and new)
Huh, just had a random remembering. Dolly Parton has not covered this song.
Well didn't realize I'd typed this much... if you get this far, thanks for "listening".
Gonna say gnite.
Really nice. Gnite. @@splehcar
Ella Fitzgerald's voice gives me goose bumps. Roger's & Hart could have no greater tribute than to have her voice singing their song with such remarkable clarity & exquisite tone. She was our national treasure.
Hello 👋 Leslie
How are you doing today
Esta e voz mais bonita do mundo nunca que estados vai ter uma cantora que nem miss ella fetzgerald
her voice is like velvet...soft, amazing...never get enough.
My God, this is the best version of this song I have ever heard! Ella was a gift from the gods to all of us.
This song gives me so much self belief, power.. 1956, My parents were a year old, yet here i am 2019 and it speaks to me..
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, my dad had this album around the house and I listed to this constantly.
Listing to this song in 2020, to remind my mind of the good things.
This is such a beautiful song, there is so much kindness in her voice it makes you happy and sad at the same time... I had tears of joy while listening to this...
omg....yep...same here
Perfectly said! ❤
Yes that is me
Me too
I think i finally understand now... When i listened to other music it felt so empty insife of me. As if there was a hole in there. But after listening to Ella.. there's an urge to keep listening to her... The way her voice touches your heart... The way your emotions are stirred, and u feel so lifted.. beautiful...
When I listen to her voice, I feel the meaning of life, I feel that I live.
Today's music pales in comparison to this woman's voice and style!
@@rossellapirina383 No, I don't hear a "White" voice. The timbre of her voice is still "Black". Sarah Vaughn sounds slightly more White, than Ella.
Pretty well said! Same here.
Her voice is so beautiful.
She’s so patient in this song. Ugh I love her.
A perfect example of voice as instrument.
I like your profile picture! 😉
This song really shows her extraordinary skills as a technician and an artist.
This song instantly takes me back to moments in my life that took 20 years to become special. It will forever be my touchstone.
Voice like velvet.
Class beyond Class.
Ella's artistry was the definition of vocal perfection. Very few singers matched her. I really love the line about "horizontally speaking." This song and Ella's rendition is pure joy.
It's so ironic that there are "subtitles" for this, probably the best-articulated performance of a song of all time.
60Singing there are some of us who are trying to learn new languages, and music certainly helps our purpose.
+60Singing you should change your way of thinking. Subtitles = extra help for non-native speaker (edit) and for people with hearing impairment
She was perfect.
Ella's diction was always on point.
So was Frank Sinatra's diction @@mrlopez-pz7pu
@@tacotony4090 spoken like a real gentleman..i l raise my hat to you sir!
Robert Elmore - You are truly a class act 👍🏻👏🏻
Must be half pints lol
@@judysceeles2076 or quarter pints!
😀
This fits my situation 100%, but I still can't let go, so I listen again and again, but it still doesn't sink in. I'm just going to keep listening until the right one comes along and he better like jazz.
Really sweet.
I'm sure he will - you sound wonderful.
Then that last verse will be yours to own and you'll reeeeally feel it. Fini!!!!
Bless you!
Such a gorgeous voice, natural at its best with little accompaniment required. Love the simple beautiful clarity in each note. Bravo! 🕯⚘
Who came after the crown? Beautiful song! ❤️
Not many songs of today manages to rhyme 'dyspeptic' with 'antiseptic'...
Very Cole Porterish...
@@tmcgill2219 More like Larry Hartish...
reminds me of the strange and wonderful rhymes of Joanna Newsom
@@humphreyblogut672 You nailed it. Interchanging words and wicked double entendre was Richard Rodger's first lyricist's specialty. Porter borrowed that trick from H art--not the other way around. Lerner (mentored by hart) borrowed it in My Fair Lady--"Budapest..Never met a Ruder Pest.."
What exactly does that mean though?????
Healing?
I have heard this song many times. Today I listened to it again on my MP3 player. It hit me between the eyes. Played it here on you tube and it knock me out. By the end of the song I had tears in my eyes. Why? Why? It is magic, that is why.
What an absolute gem of a song: Ella's fabulous voice, great words and that gorgeous piano playing - simply fantastic!
It's early 2023 now and here I am, crying tears of joy and sadness, having been touched yet again by this Godliest of expressive voices that jazz ever had. May she keep spreading her love forever!
Her exquisite voice, pure gold. R.I.P. the great Ella Fitzgerald, how lucky are we to hear her still?
Awesome 👏
She have a soulful voice!
This is my favorite song 🎶 so tell me are you a fan of Ella..?
...and worship the trousers that cling to him...
Brilliant - lyrics and singer alike!
Yes I was in love before😣
Whenever I want to hear the definitive version of a song, I search RUclips for Ella's version, and she always delivers. I've never heard those lyrics before. I must have always heard the "Reader's Digest" version of the lyrics. Lorenz Hart was a genius as was Richard Rogers and of course Ella Fitzgerald.
Pure heaven....wow it never fails to send shivers down your spine...she had the voice of velvet and liquid gold...thank you Ella for these timeless memories....your voice sings on forever.
This song is my Holy grail of songs.
Hello
Ella Fitzgerald is the antidote.
direfranchement Seconded.

My condition must be chronic
Yup! U got that right ~🎼🎶🎹🎶🎵🎤
Been living in Chicago for the past 37 days... I feel Ella's music's down to the bone, every single day.
She makes it sound so easy. A formidable woman and a magnificent artist.
If ever I get that feeling that the world is coming apart at the seams, I listen to Ella and know full well there must be a God who takes pity on us all and gives us this magic in our lives.
that voice though...angel.
Egyptian_Thoth voice so silky
La voix de Dieu et Dieu est une femme !
Yes, Ella's Voice Purity was 2nd to None ......
She is vocal perfection.

Her voice is breathtaking. Just beautiful to listen to.
One of my Ella faves along with All the Things you Are and These Foolish Things. Lots of singers have sang this standard yet Ella owns it. Every word in clear and perfect diction, impeccable timing she makes the longer words easy and fun.
Sings this so easy and relaxed, Ella is one of the most amazing voices I love to hear
Her voice is flawless; she is one of the best vocal geniuses of music! Truly a priceless treasure!
Her voice is just for the "JAZZ" absolutely heavenly one.
One of the greatest singers of jazz and standards of all time
These are the songs that simply make me cry, this is true music.
This song right here is beyond phenomenal and the stages of twin flame soulmate love she eloquently but effortlessly describes is bittersweet heartbreaking heroically finally triumphant...all at the same time...WELL DONE
Ms. Fitzgerald is the greatest jazz vocalist ...PERIODT..and when she scats..DAMN..MIND BLOWING.
Iv never heard anything so beautiful 💋
Indeed...
Her voice, her soul, the way she can tell story through song it all just moves me. A true American icon ❤️
From UK an icon for sure - she easy the greatest vocal I ever heard!
Ella my all time favourite! Never knew there was so many (naughty) extra verses to Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, and I've been singing it since I was a child and I'm now 68!
Hello 👋 susan
How are you doing today
I saw Ella twice at the FreeTrade Hall in Manchester. A guy called Eldridge on trumpet did the first half, but it was clear all the packed audience were just itching for Ella and the second half.. The house erupted when she came on singing “Give me the simple life “. The second time I saw her ,pianist Oscar Peterson supported her. That was in the 70s and how privileged I feel to have witnessed such perfection. Many have tried to copy her, but none have come even close.
this is like 60 years or something ahead of my time, but i love hitting the replay button every time. it's in my playlist. i never get tired of listening to ella's voice. she's one of my favorite singers, too. thank you for this!
