Am I missing something? Isn't Venice in a lagoon that is connected to the Adriatic Sea? I know that Venice built a flood barrier that keeps Venice from super flooding from the Adriatic during high tides. So if there is too little water coming from the rivers, why not just open the flood barriers just enough to let enough water into the canals so that sea ambulances can operate?

    • @celebrityrog

The problem is you don't want to have to much salt water in the city. Normally it's a mix between a good amount of fresh water and a smaller amount of salt water.

It's a large misconception that melting ice caps will result in rising sea levels, since ice has more air than water within it. But what does happen with melting icecaps is the deregulation of water currents cooling, causing a fluctuation of the water level to become more sporadic. Warmer water expands which causes the levels to rise.

  • @scarlett8895

This is due to a very normal low tide which happens every year, the only odd thing is that it's lasting longer than usual and is exceptionally low, but it has happened before and it was even worse.
The issue does not derive from the draught as stated but because this low tide happened at the same time with very high pressure air in the Mediterranean which is keeping the water low.
Climate change has nothing to do with it, that on the contrary is rising the water levels in Venice over time, but I realise that it makes for a good headline.

Instead of worrying about the summer’s tourism rates, how about you prevent your city from sinking into the damn earth, and actually preserve it like we do with every other UNESCO world heritage site. God’s sakes I should be running Italy at this point.

If any of the officials had half a brain, they'd use this opportunity to reinforce all the buildings and implement measures to either keep the water out of reinforce the buildings against it. Because I think this might be their last chance to save the city before the water comes back, probably worse than ever, and they're completely unable to stop it from sinking or all the buildings (that weren't made to be underwater 24/7 for decades at a time) from crumbling
