    26:00 actually one of the scariest parts of the infected in the last of us is that they’re still alive, they know that they’re infected but can’t control themselves. In the game you can actually see some of them crying or gagging while they’re eating someone

    • @nebullae
      @nebullae Год назад +31

      i think that's just in the first one or two stages of infection because they're not fully taken over yet, but (cmiiw) by the time they're clickers with the fungus growing out of their heads like that they're pretty much just bodies being puppeted around by the fungus. still, super creepy and sad.

      @@nebullaeyeah it really depends how you look at it, you could say late stage infections are still alive just changed to a point that is unrecognisable as human but you can also say they die around stalker time and the fungus takes control, but I don’t think it’s ever been made clear we just know they stop being able to resist behaviour towards the end of runner stage based on the dialogue in the game

    The most tragic thing about this version of “zombie” is that these people are very much still alive. Zombies are reanimated dead so over time, they decompose (ie. The Walking Dead Walkers). Here, it’s like a living drug inside you. You’d be alive but have no idea why you’re doing the things you’re doing while also having things grow out of you. So they’re people “infected” with fungus thus calling them Infected rather than Zombie

  • @pepe-silvia
    @pepe-silvia Год назад +114

    The infected aren't dead, this was described in the first episode. The cordyceps takes over the minds of their victims and then keeps them alive by preventing decomposition in order to continue to spread the fungus. It's definitely not like a typical zombie plague where the dead are being reanimated. The level 1 infected, the ones we see the most running around after people, are called Runners. The level 2 infected are the Clickers that we saw in this episode. Those are the ones that have potentially been walking around for 20 years now. They are blind due to the heavy fungal growth on their heads so they use a form of echolocation (the clicking) in order to listen for their victims, hence the need to be absolutely silent when they're around. The general name for all of them are the "infected". The term zombie is never used.

    The zombies are called the infected in the game. There are a bunch of different categories with different abilities and what category the are is determined by how long they've been infected. The grandma at the beginning was a runner which is the first stage where they're super fast. A clicker is the one we saw in the museum where their eyes no longer function and they see with echolocation which is what the clicking sound is. I won't describe any of the others in case that can be viewed as a spoiler but those are the ones we've seen so far

  • @jollyrayda
    @jollyrayda Год назад +26

    The kiss = Tess was infected but resisting, and the cordyceps hive mind was likely 'aware' of that. So while the majority of the horde ignored her as 'one of 'us' as they barrelled through, the network sent her "stumbly suitor" to remove the threat she presented by accelerating the process of infection. Her freezing was because she was fighting HARD to light that lighter in time - and it worked, because she dropped it before he turned her completely. There's a reason they had Tess make a point about the infected all being connected and how big the network can get earlier in the episode...

  • @torijeri
    @torijeri Год назад +28

    okay so explaining the names. there’s different names for different “zombies” depending on how long they’ve been infected & how much the fungas has grown.
    runners are the recently infected but haven’t had much fungal growth. (stage 1 i guess)
    stalker’s are the ones who have more growth from their heads but can still see (the one who kissed tess)
    clickers are the ones who has growth to the point they can’t see so they click so they can use echolocation to know where things are (think of the mummy zombie things from moon knight it’s the same concept)
    there’s more but they haven’t talked about or shown those yet so that’s it for now. :)

      yep and it's not a parasite, either! fungi, virus, and parasite are three different things. she was right about it being the fungus that grows out of ants heads (cordyceps) so essentially it's the same thing, but they've adapted to human temperatures due to global warming so that's why they're able to infect human bodies as well.

    • @madelinewhite1749
      @madelinewhite1749 Год назад +3

      technically i guess you *could* call cordyceps a type of ‘parasitic fungus’ ?
      it is sort of similar when you think about how they both feed off their host... but the fungus is definitely scarier, since it can alter the brain rather than just destroying it (like if a parasite were to feast on the brain, instead of having control over it like the fungus does). it’s such an awesome concept, definitely a big part of why the game had such a strong impression on me all those years ago! I was the same age as Ellie’s character when the game came out and I played for the first time, it was my dad who introduced me to it. He’s since passed away, almost two years ago now, and it hurts not being able to discuss this show with him, I just wish we could watch it together 💔
      But I’m so glad people get to experience this for the first time, and non gamers will be introduced to the incredible world of TLOU 🥰

    Stage 1: runners; infected are still semi-conscious of their actions, but cannot control their bodies.
    Stage 2: stalker; infected are still semi-conscious of the actions, but I'm more primitive in their ways, they usually use hit-and-run tactics and ambitious, these infected have fungus growing out of half their skull.
    Stage 3: clickers; blind infected will split open skulls, and disk shaped mushroom heads, they use echolocation. they have lost all of their humanity.
    Stage 4: yet to be seen....

    Blown away by good this is!
    I was blown away by how much I enjoyed The Last of Us. It's based off a video game of the same name. It follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Elle (Bella Ramsey) as they have to trek across the country as they try to survive killers and monsters after an outbreak has taken over the world. It's one of the best reviewed shows by both critics and fans alike, it currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I know it's early but I'm absolutely hooked. I hate that I have to wait a week between episodes as this is a perfect show to binge. If you're looking for a new show to get into then give this a try, you won't be disappointed. No Pancakes mix to make pancakes for breakfast, no Biscuits from the neighbor, no cookies for Sarah cause who like raisins more then Chocolate chip.. and Joel forgot to bring the cake home for his birthday.

      Of course in the game there are distinct stages you might draw lines between, but in the show they seem to be doing a lot of inbetweens so highlight that it's just a gradual change.
      I wish there was more blur between normal human and runner though, the game did that part better. In the show they just suddenly are growling monsters but in the game they looked like people infected with rabies while also having a bad acid trip. Fungi DO occasionally infect humans, though usually only people with weakened immune systems. And we do have antifungal treatments (athlete's foot!)
    But one big problem is that fungi are actually more closely related to us than viruses or bacteria, so it's difficult coming up with deep treatments that affect fungi but not the rest of you.

    They're called infected because they're infected by the fungus. In the game there was an airborne element to it (with spores) but i guess they took it out because they didn't want to have the cast shoot in gas masks at times? As others have pointed out there are different types of infected and Clickers are one of them. I guess if word got out that Ellie somehow still hasn't turned it could not only put a target on her back for reasons you mentioned but also put one on your back if you're in her company, also you would think everyone wants a cure if possible but that's not necessarily the case
    As for the show i really like it so far. There are some changes i loved - like getting more insight on Sarah's day etc. And there are some changes i'm a little bummed about - like how as much as i didn't hate the way Marlene and our group met up i still wish we got to see Joel and Tess chase Robert down and the subsequent scene where Tess just shoots him in cold blood; or even just the fact that they had Sarah wandering around outside during that final night. That's just a couple of exemples but overall i think it's a lot of fun

    Stage 2, Stalkers: These are infected that have been around from a couple weeks to a year. They stalk and hide from prey until it’s the right moment to attack. Some of them latch on the wall to let the fungus fester and grow. (We see this in episode one.)
    Stage 3, Clickers: We see this in episode two, they have fungus all over their heads. They use echolocation, they’re blind, stronger and faster cuz of the fungus etc. They’ve been infected for over one year.

    Nice screaming reaction. You made it through the first two episodes. I gagged a bit too when it went to kiss her. Made me wonder what they actually had in the actors' mouth when they filmed that scene. It looks grouse. It would be funny to see pics of them eating the stuff in outtakes. The show proves once again that some video games have really good storytelling to them. Others not so much. But it's kind of an original take on the whole zombie thing. And the end of the world thing. I don't know what they said in the game is the cause of the mutation in the infection. However, if it turns out to be the radiation from g5 or g6 cell phone towers. That might be to close to what some have suspected happened with covid. They scrubbed just about all the claims of the infections growing around where the G5 towers went up. Like they didn't want anyone to know how it spread so fast. One G5 tower is said to have at least a 25 mile range. Yet Manhattan which is a 4mile by 2mile island has 3 of them. How does that work out for those numbers? And NYC had some of the highest rates of Covid for a while. Now they don't even report the actual number anymore. Soon it will just be mixed in with the flu numbers. Which for those who don't know in the US the flu numbers every year also include SARS H1N1 and a couple of other things that were never cured. But magically disappeared. You have to dig deep here to find out what the actual numbers of something actually are if can at all. My computer might be red flagging right now talking about infections. Well until the next episode. This is the way.

    They aren't zombies because they aren't dead, just got a really intense fungal infection.
    Clickers is the term for the second stage of infection.
    Stage One: Runners - incredibly fast, easiest to kill.
    Stage Two: Clickers - blind and uses echolocation. Fungus has spread over the head, providing something of helmet, making them harder to kill.
    The stages are indication of how long a person has been infected and living.
    As Joel said, some don't live more than a few months. They might not even reach the clicker stage fully.
    However, again, as Joel said in episode two, some have also been around for twenty years.
    Those stages are spoiler territories.

    So actual term is Infected
    The beginning part was foreshadowed fungal virus. There’s a lot of Infecteds come in multiple stages:
    Runners and Clickers are just the forms of it.
    I love how well adjusted and adapted the show is! They chose so much proper bits to stay fateful to and the changes gave much more depth. This is how I expected game adaptations to be. Keep the core value and story while giving it more backbone and depth through additional scenes not in the game. Honor the game (and it’s fandom) while understanding and preparing the adaptation to new viewers.
    So far the first 2 episodes have used proper “segments” of the game to bookend each episodic storyline.
    The exclusion of spores was understandable but somewhat sad. It felt very necessary in the game to show how infected an area can be, but utterly unnecessary for a show to have a bunch of spore or dust be around 🤷🏽‍♂️😊

    Ok so the zombies are not just called clickers. There are different types of the zombies and the one they fought in the second episode was a clicker. It can't hear so it makes sounds like a bat (ecolocation) to locate where people are at. The longer someone has been a zombie is what determines what stage of the infection they are. Freshly bitten people are know as runners. I think stage 2 is a stalker, and then there's the clicker, and then bloater and so on... sorry for the long comment😂

      I personally think the performances by the motion capture cast of the game are just better, as you said, more impactful. Troy and Ashley just understand Joel and Ellie. I think Bella is doing fine so far, but just don't buy Pedro as a hardened survivor, and with no disrespect to Anna Torv, I believe she was completely miscast as Tess. Please read to the end! No spoilers here
    And that's why i don't watch trailers and this is not the first show i keep hearing people say "oh! she wasn't in the trailers" or stuff like that... and its all shows that i know the original material but it takes me out of the experience when i keep hearing over and over about the trailer from some one that says that they don't like spoilers... like... I hate spoilers and that's why even knowing the whole story I get thrown off my experience from stuff you people say in the reactions because they saw in the trailer and I'm here trying to experience the changes they make to the original and to get spoiled like that... not to mention it cheapens some reactions because "I didn't saw her in the trailers".
    At this point I'm considering only watching reactions once a show or season is over to avoid getting spoiled... But even then does not fix the issue of being put off by some one figuring out stuff from watching the trailer and spoiling the reaction part of it with "I saw this coming because of the trailer"
    I don't know... it suppose to be a reaction and not an "i figured something out just before it happened because of previous knowledge"
    And I watch reaction from people who know the whole story like me and I get a better feeling from their reaction because it's their awe of "this is just like the game" or "wow! this is so different but in a good way" or "this change makes sense" of "this is such a good expansion on the original material" than hearing "I know this happens cuz i saw in the trailer"...
    Sorry for the long post and is nothing against you in particular Its just that so many people are doing this for this show specifically that it got this reaction from me.

  • @sp0ngeb00b7
    @sp0ngeb00b7 Год назад

    Definitely not better than the game. I think people are just very much hyped with recency bias and have forgotten how good the story is, and the performances of the original actors (cutscenes in the game were performed with motion capture suits, it is not just voice acted, that's how they make the Avatar movies!). I also think people are just very happy to be watching a video game adaptation that is actually good, video games are especially hard to adapt because part of the appeal and connection of a game is being directly in the shoes of the protagonist, and ofc your agency is removed when you're watching it on the screen with no controller :)) I'd say it's a win for proving game adaptations can be done well, but the games were acted so well in the first place it kind of feels pointless at the same time, so the appeal for me personally as a fan is seeing little details having more time to be fleshed out that you can't really fit into the run time of a game! Love your reactions as always though Monica, and nice to see both people who already adore the story and who are following it week by week :))

Also Anna Torv by all accounts seems like a decent enough actress, this just role just wasn't meant for her. At least she's dead lol

I always liked the mystery of Joel and Tess’ relationship in the game, the fact that we know they’ve basically been together since the outbreak but through all that time they’ve just remained in a sort of mutually beneficial partnership rather than official relationship, the flirtation and tension it created off the bat was fantastic. But with the weaker, older, more worn down angle to Tess in the show, abandoning that and making her profess her love without any character development just makes it feel like an entirely different character altogether, actual Tess would never have let an infected kiss her?!
