Fun fact: Doki Doki refers to how people in Japan think what a heartbeat sounds like. Combined with the word "Panic", the title fits the tone of the game: tense, non-stop action.
Their talk about the lack of backlight on the GB and GBA reminded me of those tiny lamps you could attach to the systems to see the screen more easily. Ah, those were the days!
Oh, wow! I actually remember having one of those. It connected to the port on top of the GBA and covered the screen when closed. Of course, I think the wire broke, then I got an SP. I say the SP has two pros and two cons. Pro: a) backlight makes it easier to see, b) you can recharge it directly. No more batteries! Con: a) it's smaller, which made it feel cramped at first, b) no headphone jack.

Looking back at things, it's genuinely quite surprising that the Gameboy Advance didn't deliver too much of an uplift over what we got from the Super Famicom; more often than not, I render it as a Super Famicom Portable because of its similar audio and graphical capabilities, despite having more RAM and Data Capacity than the SFC and even the Genesis/Megadrive offered, this is why we got so many ports from the former (even if they were not optimal; the ports of Mother 0I & II in Japan were a prime example of this, though were almost spot~on), this would explain why it has more love in Japan than North America and Europe in its original run and we can also kind of thank other resources such as the e~Reader in Late 200I for amping its later life (despite its failure). As for Vocal Cues, this was the GBA's downfall, so many games overused it that it actually became an Earsore (though Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Sonic Advance III, F~Zero: Climax, and Sword of Sia: Lady Sia II knew how to balance it): The many times that I have had to hear "Nicely Received!" in a One Game session of NBA Jam 2002 was my Breaking Point, I don't know what Audio Compression is like on the system but there were only about Six to Twelve cues (if memory serves correctly) and that one was what played the most; this is why the Dual Screen was such an important change in direction for the future of Dialogue Heavy portable titles, it helped vocal cues be spaced out in a more realistic way and allowed it to play in a healthy manner, we'll occasionally have a game that is GBA Grade in its use of vocals but it is rare compare to the era of 200I to 2008.
To give credit, Nintendo did support the GBA for a fair bit after the DS' launch (April 20th 2006 was MOTHER 3's launch, which was the last Nintendo published game on the console.) A fair bit of other games came out in that span, notably at least Minish Cap and Sacred Stones, both of which are held in high regard I know (well, I think Minish Cap is. Sacred Stones outright is many people's favorite FE from what I can tell.)
Ah the GBA. Lots of memories with this handheld. I got Super Mario Advance 2 (aka the Super Mario World port) with it bundled when I first got my GBA. I also have this game, the Yoshi's Island port, the Mario 3 port, Superstar Saga, Mario Golf Advance Tour, Mario Tennis Advance Tour, Super Circuit, and some others I can't remember off the top of my head right now.
It's worth noting that Super Mario Bros. was designed with an (relatively for the time) accessible approach to difficulty, and that is very much deliberate. Super Mario Bros ended up having a lot of stakes on the success of the NES in the west, in a market that had shunned video games for the prior three years. They really wanted word of mouth and playing-while-at-your-cousins occasions to work in their favor, as it would've been most people's first impressions of the NES at the time. I have a feeling that if SMB2J (The Lost Levels) was released in its stead, the NES would not have had the success it had.
Regarding the tangent about characters talking constantly throughout the game, I'll give Sonic Forces some credit in that it has an option to turn the voiced dialogue in stages off.
Super Mario 2 is one of the first video games I remember playing. My late grandmother had an old NES in her home with that, Tetris, and TMNT 2. Thanksgiving will always be associated with that game in my mind.
I first experience this game at the dentist. So the dentist I went to as a kid would provide you with a Game Boy Advance and a game to play for during the fluoride treatment and the game I would play was Super Mario Advance. It wouldn't be until 2005 when I would finally get the game for myself, then I was able to actually play it from start to finish. I personally like that it's easier to get hearts in this version of the game.
Ah, Doki Doki PreCure. I remember this game. This version though... not very well, apparently, as even the first screen had me going "Wait, what?" at the different level layout. They probably went with Mario 2 because Mario 1 (and an unlockable Lost Levels) was on GBC, and GBA could still play GBC games.
Ted saying he's not very good at this, and honestly, eh. It's a tough game, maybe the harder SMB for NES and SNES (we don't talk about Lost Levels), so it's not a bad thing to not be good at this. I genuinely have always liked this game. Not as much as the original or 3, but it's always fun for me. I guess it's the unique things about it that I like so much. I just have never liked the NES versions of this and 3 as an All Stars kid.
God, I need to finish this game. Phanto's added growth mechanic the closer it gets to the screen scared the crap out of me, to the point I just stopped. Reminds me of when I died as Toad while still in one of the jars, and the Phanto stayed on screen for 10 or more seconds after death to keep floating, the exited the screen blitzing diagonally. Has anyone else had a moment where Phanto stayed on screen a while after death?
Spent so much time on this when I got my GBA back in 2001 Christmas... All of the batteries in the house were at my disposal and I had to hide in the closet to play at night because I couldn't get enough of it. 😊
I'm getting weirdly nostalgic as VinnyVinesauce is playing another GBA launch title, which is the aftermentioned Castlevania game, Circle of the Moon. Antdude just recently covered Wario Land 4 and GOD the GBA was a leap from the GBC...
Holy fuck, this was the first Mario game I ever owned (making that distinction because Mario Land was the first Mario I ever played). Can't wait to see this through to the end!
Growing up I was a Mario advance 4 kid Also I figure there was never an enhanced port of super Mario Bros 1 because super Mario Bros deluxe existed so I guess 2 was a natural follow up for remakes The original lost levels was literally made as "the Mario for people who mastered smb1" My only real problem with smb2 is how darn slippery everything is
Since I didn't grow up with an NES or a SNES, it had to be the Mario Advance titles that gave me my experience with the early Mario games (Along with Mario Bros Deluxe for Mario 1 and Lost Levels.)
Oh, this is the version of the game that I grew up with. I'm in my early 20s, and I played the shit out of this game during the 2000s. I never managed to beat it, although I must have played through it at least a dozen times. Watching this commentary really takes me back, I remember the level layouts so distinctly.
I’m from WV and marrying cousins is illegal here but we can own a kangaroo without a permit. And if you hit an animal with your car, you are allowed to scrape it up and take it home to cook it. Anyway I like SMB2
I love this game! Though, I vastly prefer the All-Stars version of Super Mario 2 (USA). In Advance, the voices get incredibly grating, the color is toned down, and the game dials back the difficulty to an almost insulting degree. Hearts and lives are really easy to collect in this version. This honestly is one of the easiest 2D Mario games. I do have a soft spot for it, though, as I already love Mario 2 USA and having it portable back in 2001 was great! I also do really like that they added extra challenges like Ace Coins and the Yoshi Egg Hunt. They were actually pretty fun to complete.
The GameBoy Advance was incredible for its time! It was a huge jump for handheld gaming! Not to mention, it also had quite a solid library of titles. Who didn't like having a portable SNES back then??

I have a weird memory of a game that looked similar to Super Mario Advance but was like a DS game and also in 3D and looked more like New Super Mario Bros. Luigi, Toad, and Peach were playable too and chosen in a similar screen to the one from this. The game had Goombas and what not and the first boss was King Bob-Omb who threw Bob-Ombs at you that you had to throwback as he jumped around. It wasn't me playing this, some kid was playing it in my class back in Elementary school around 4th or 5th Grade. Which was a long ass time ago.

Since you mentioned West Virginia, I wonder if any of you guys are willing to do a Fallout game. Not one of the open world ones as they would take forever, but the early old school ones Fallout 1 and 2. It be interesting to hear your views of the series and how much it has transformed over the years as well as few other things in the games giant universe.
I kinda hope whoever plays it does a joke/bonus video where you play with low intelligence. "Ohhh....you again? What want now?" - "Uh?" - "Huh?" - "Huh?" - "Whuh?" - "Mom?" - *End* But yeah, a commentary on Fallout 1 would be neat, if a bit lopsided seeing as the only one in the crew who seems to talk about Fallout is Lewis. Fallout 1 & 2 are also very text-heavy games, so if the player doesn't take the time to paraphrase whatever's going on, we could very quickly have another F-Zero GX commentary. *Also, whoever decides to play Fallout 1, please download the Fallout Fixt mod. It makes the game more convenient to play as you can actually use other programs while it's running, without needing to mess with hotkeys or other nonsense.

Ah, here we have the easiest version of Mario 2 USA. Not that it's a bad thing, but I've played the S/NES versions so much that I only ever play this version to get 100% (all Ace Coins and Yoshi Eggs). That said, if this game is giving anyone trouble, this is the version I recommend playing. I don't like this game as much as I do the other classic games. Hell, even I'd play Lost Levels over this, but the number of tricks you can do when speed running does bring me back occasionally.
The ice storm of 2002 happened I'm pretty sure and we didn't have power at my house for like 3 days so I remember playing this game in Candle light. Good times?
Another memory I have with this game is that I had a guide book for it (yes, I don't know why I had it) and this particular guide book I had showed a glitched out screen in the final level of the game that I never understood why it was there.
I use Duracell batteries in my Nintendo Wii remotes controllers instead of rechargeable batteries. They are much easier to deal with than rechargeable batteries.
I remember Super Mario Advance 4 being one of the first GBA games I owned. I had fun with it until I got to one level in World 2 with the Boo House. Yeah, I sucked at platformers back in my elementary school days.
Harmony of Dissonance can be summed up as overcompensating for Circle of the Moon's flaws in almost every way. Aside from the two castle system and with it, the increase in backtracking, the other big downgrade between the two games is that HoD bosses aren't really as interesting/memorable when compared to Circle of the Moon.
The game's castle design isn't all that well thought of and it also makes the game pathetically easy. I say it's the easiest Metroidvania style Castlevania game of the franchise. Even more so than Symphony of the Night. At least in SotN, u had some unique challenges if you don't wonna be that O.P. guy. But hear, you're O.P. no matter what the options are. Juste puts Alucard into like it's the 2nd coming of jesus.

They probably went with Mario 2 because Mario 1 (and an unlockable Lost Levels) was on GBC, and GBA could still play GBC games.
Congrats to this video alone most likely having more Charles Martinet than the Mario movie will
Ted saying he's not very good at this, and honestly, eh.
There's a reason Luigi is called "Slippery Weeg"!
I'm not sure if the guys planned this, but it has been 10 years since the original commentary of SMB2.
This is as far as you go, I'll remember this.
It is hard to believe, but this year marks the 20th Anniversary of the GameBoy Advance and this game! Time just flies by!
Oh man I wasn't expecting such a shot of nostalgia today but I couldnt be happier to be getting it
God, I need to finish this game.
Well here’s a blast from the past.
0:08 Ted: Don't @ me.
Me: Oh I most certainly will@ you.
Holy fuck, this was the first Mario game I ever owned (making that distinction because Mario Land was the first Mario I ever played). Can't wait to see this through to the end!
Growing up I was a Mario advance 4 kid
Also I figure there was never an enhanced port of super Mario Bros 1 because super Mario Bros deluxe existed so I guess 2 was a natural follow up for remakes
The original lost levels was literally made as "the Mario for people who mastered smb1"
My only real problem with smb2 is how darn slippery everything is
Yep. The first Color only cart at that.
I have never decided if that or SNES Mario 1 is my favorite version.
Or as how the alternate title calls it "Super Mario Bros. for Super Players."
Since I didn't grow up with an NES or a SNES, it had to be the Mario Advance titles that gave me my experience with the early Mario games (Along with Mario Bros Deluxe for Mario 1 and Lost Levels.)
Game of the Year, baby!
Advance was my battle network handheld
4:17 Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga cries in a corner.
I know they meant like platformer Mario specifically probably but you'd think they'd mention it.
@@JMandJJ7797 They also forgot to mention Mario vs Donkey Kong, Mario Pinball Land, Mario Party Advance, and Super Curcuit.
original mario probably means super mario, entries in existing/new versions of mario that weren't super mario were plentiful otherwise
I remember my sister and I fighting over who would play Mario 3 instead of Mario 2 on GBA. Childhood, man.
19:20 huh, I didn’t realize Elliot recorded this playthrough
All four BrainScratch members talking over a 2D Mario game makes me feel right at home. :)
My favorite version of Super Mario Bros. 2!
Just to say, The DS Lite and beyond has a better screen, the og DS screen ain't the best.
The GBA start up sound is nice, but nothing is touching the PS1 start up sound in terms of greatness.
I appreciate you trying each character, but _Toad_
Too bad Bubsy never shut up in Bubsy 3D.
Toad is the fast and strongest in this game. I know the game takes place in a dream, but imagine if he 1 on 1 bowser
The GBA even had some good FPS games on it. The ports of Doom and Doom 2 are actually really good for what they are.
The GameBoy Advance was incredible for its time! It was a huge jump for handheld gaming! Not to mention, it also had quite a solid library of titles. Who didn't like having a portable SNES back then??
Funny enough there was a handheld Genesis in the second half of the '90s. It was called the Sega Nomad.
@@jlev1028 I do recall the Sega Nomad was released in the mid-nineties, but I heard it wasn't much of a success. It took as many batteries as the Game Gear and had even worse battery life.
uh... johnny? Link in OOT was screaming when you swung the sword. Just fyi, you've not said anything about it far as i know, same for MM
Boo, where's RE8!? /s
Naw, I really loved this game growing up... So glad you guys are covering this too. I think besides HFC, y'all the best playthrough commentary channel on here.
Love the vocal tracks in Altered Beast on the Mega Drive/Genesis
Mouser: You asked for it more bombs, Hey it's your favourite explosives
"It's time to start the party!"
Playing as Keegan Michael Key over here.
Super Mario Advance 4’s e-Reader levels are peak 2D Mario that most of NSMB falls short of
10 seconds in and Ted has already incurred the wrath of god
i love super mario bros 2, played it so much on the wii virtual console despite not being able to beat birdo, haha. dad loved mario 1 and 3 but he barely played 2, so 2 felt like this game i discovered myself haha. picked up this version recently, but havent played too much of it.
i remember getting super mario world on gba when i was very young and having to sit by the sun lit window in my sisters room in order to see anything.
GBA was around for less than half the time 3DS was around and still sold more
This is gonna be a good playthrough
And painful for those who grew up with Super Mario Advance. Seriously, Ted's performance here was painful to watch, but in a good way.
Also, I just realized Super Mario Advance is 20 years old. God, I'm old.
Oh this will be good stuff
Welp, can't say I was expecting this.
The first Mario game i ever played.
Mine was Mario World
I have a weird memory of a game that looked similar to Super Mario Advance but was like a DS game and also in 3D and looked more like New Super Mario Bros.
Are you sure you're not talking about Mario 64 DS? Neither Peach nor Toad were playable.
@@jlev1028 No no I swear it was a 2D game like New Super Mario Bros. but with like 3D models and graphics.
@@JMandJJ7797 O_o...can I have whatever drugs you're on? They sound fun.
@@smashmaster521 No no it's a mandela effect thing or something but I remember it so vividly. It could be a dream I just happen to remember for all I know.
@@JMandJJ7797 A dream, you say? Oh, the irony.
SUPER MARIO BROS 2 BABY! GAME OF THE YEAR EVERY YEAR!
...I seriously hope we get world e someday, that shit's all solid gold
10:55 ... *actually goes to check my wii remotes to find*
...huh. still in good condition. The batteries look more weared than the controller
What want now?" - "Uh?" - "Huh?" - "Huh?" - "Whuh?" - "Mom?" - *End*
But yeah, a commentary on Fallout 1 would be neat, if a bit lopsided seeing as the only one in the crew who seems to talk about Fallout is Lewis.
14:34 It's top secret lore Ryan, Paula Deen is Luigi's biological mom. So Luigi is half Italian, a quarter hillbilly, and a quarter stick of butter.
Calibrary Cuff Paula Deen
Ah head up BSC because the Castlevania advance Collection is calling to the Nintendo Switch. On Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, Area of Sorrow and Dracula X SNES is coming up right now.
[DK gets a banana] Oooooooooohh, Virginia~
AMAZING MINI-MARIO TOYS! IT WALKS, IT TALKS, IT SAYS "Mini-Mario". HURRY, AND BUY ONE BEFORE THEY'RE ALL SOLD OUT! HURRY! BUY THEM ALL, BUY THEM ALL, BUY THEM ALL!
Also, how about that Shy Guy news report?
Fun fact: Doki Doki panic was originally going to be Mario game so Super Mario Bros 2 USA is technically the true Super Mario Bros 2
It’s funny out of the first 3 Mario games 2 is my favorite
I find it funny that this playthrough is uploaded on the 10th anniversary of their original Doki Doki Panic: Mario Edition playthrough.
It is time for the classic.~
The ice storm of 2002 happened I'm pretty sure and we didn't have power at my house for like 3 days so I remember playing this game in Candle light. Good times?
Another memory I have with this game is that I had a guide book for it (yes, I don't know why I had it) and this particular guide book I had showed a glitched out screen in the final level of the game that I never understood why it was there.
I think I'm easier on these GBA ports then others because I grew up on them, I played this game on My PsP quite a bit ago and had a pretty fun time.
I use Duracell batteries in my Nintendo Wii remotes controllers instead of rechargeable batteries. They are much easier to deal with than rechargeable batteries.
the screen size and the save battery dying is why i just stick with an emulator if i really want to play a gameboy/gba game.
5:38 some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb
Toad is huge in this game!
my childhood!!
I remember Super Mario Advance 4 being one of the first GBA games I owned. I had fun with it until I got to one level in World 2 with the Boo House. Yeah, I sucked at platformers back in my elementary school days.
Uh, I think you mean Super Mario Advance 2. Super Mario Bros. 3 didn't have Ghost Houses.
@@smashmaster521 You're right.. I must've meant the first castle in World 2 where Boos made their first appearance.
@@jlev1028 Oh, okay. That makes more sense.
"There were no original Mario games on the GBA"
Meanwhile Superstar Saga sits off to the side and cries
they probably meant platformers, superstar is an rpg
No original Mario PLATFORMERS.
my favorite game on game boy advance is cartoon network speedway.
Ngl I never got the hate for the voices in this particular game
Speaking of the GBA Castlevannia games
If I recall correctly, it wasn't so much that the 3DS was doing poorly (I seem to recall that it was selling... Not necessarily well, but enough to not be a failure.)
john you do realize that Ocarina of Time and the other 3D Zelda games had Link screaming every time he swung a sword too, right?
Yes, but it wasn't as frequent as A Link To The Past on GBA.
Yeeeaaaa Wiimotes were designed awfully. Batteries, leaking leaking leaking. Never had the leaking problem EVER when I used to play Xbox 360 with wireless controllers. 2 of my Wiimotes no longer work due to the leaking (Could also be extensive use but the third Wiimote is completely fine even with extensive use). Chargable consoles/controllers out of the box really saved many gamers.
