Hello. Just wanted to let you know that I started watching this video when I rowed in college in 2013. I continue to use it for motivation in everything I do, 8 years later. Thank you for this video!!!
This is stunningly inspiring as applied to rowing. But this idea of the "inches" all around us and right in front of our face, and the idea of being so devoted that you feel willing to die for what you're doing, are really amazing metaphors for something deeper--for life. I think rowers get emotional about this because they understand that. Sometimes when I'm rowing I feel like I'm fighting against my own demons. It makes you better.
this is seriously the one of most inspirational speeches ever. wether it be applied to rowing, or any other sport. whatever it's applied to it makes sense. i watch this before every race and it never fails to put me in the mindset of doing whatever it takes to win.
Our coach just showed this to our college rowing team yesterday and I was blown away. I typically love to watch motivational speeches and videos, and this one was truly one the best. Now I can't stop listening to it. =)
Every time the night before a race, and every time I lose one, I watch this video. It gets me psyched for the day after, gets my blood pumping and reminds me why I row. Perfection.
It's the start of the year. It's getting cold. I'm losing motivation, I'm most certainly am not gonna be in the number one boat. I search for inspiration. And in that speech, I find all the inspiration I need. Now, my blood is circulating for one reason: rowing. To achieve those goals we all dream of, but never think we'll reach. I have honestly never gotten goosebumps by watching a video. Up till now.
I'm a rower out oa small tow clb, an this as to be the best rowing clip ever. i've been to the big regattas across north america, i can relate to it, and it is truly moving.
Thanks for making this video Kevin, it's really powerful. And if you ever read this, I thought I might let you know, you're a wonderful coach. All I ever want to do is make you proud. I give my 100% Again, thanks for your patience and support everyday. Your kind words never go unnoticed and always brighten my day and motivate me. Thankyou.
THIS SPEECH always gets me pumped before a race. THIS SPEECH makes me pull that little bit harder every stroke of the way. THIS SPEECH picks me up after a mistake or a bad race. i crabbed at nat schools this year and our boat lost. i was crushed. but THIS SPEECH inspired me to get up, and train harder.
This is what this video did to me: it was about 10 pm when I watched it. Afterwards, I climbed on my erg and put in the hardest 60 mins post season. I felt good. Thanks!
I was lucky enough to have two great coaches for my first year of rowing... Wes Piermarini was one of my coaches, and he was in the Beijing Olympics(pn.air). Such an inspiratio
So many people underestimate how tough rowing is. When people say they are "tired" we are more tired, when people say they have really "hurt" during sport they haven't really hurt. Haha rowing brings a new meaning to those words.
This video is awesome! I just started rowing this year and its level of intensity is something I have never experienced. It's talks like this that can truly fire up a team to win. I agree with 1GGY-- the video really sums up the sport as a whole. Excellent job.
the canadian team.. around 5 years ago now had another sweet video. had songs like the distance by cake and renegades of funk. im just wondering if anyone knows of it.... This is still the greatest pump up video i have ever seen though
rowing is like a drug you know you dont want to do it but there is something that just keeps drawing you back but still great vid very nicely done rowing love it very hard not forthe weak heart big ups to the vid keep em comeing:)
I don't care who said this, and I don't care that this is a speech about the supposed glory of football. This is, and forever will be, a speech about rowing
you're right, but sometimes that drive to compete in you dies out.. and you want to sit at the back with the rest of society, and WATCH others compete.. it's a speech like this that brings that desire to win back to life
I won my last race of the season by 0.1 seconds in spring i had 2 races that i won by even less 0.09 and 0.07 seconds. Live hard, Train harder, Race hardest. ...God damn i love this sport
rowing is actually, as some shirts state, the only sport that derived from a form of capital punishment. rowing has been around for over a thousand years! rowing is not a hobby but a lifestyle. thats why i enjoy it.
,,,,the comradeship of teamwork, the joint effort producing an almost mystical intimacy when everything is clicking together perfectly. The unity is most sensual in its intensity, and one forgives one's crewmates everything, all their annoying little quirks and habits, for those moments of bliss. There is in short nothing quite like it and those who have not been throught it have missed a life-enhancing experience. ,,, "
You will dream that sound for more than 50 years!! And your stroke will get better in those dreams,,,,,,,,,and when you are on the paddle again,,,,it will be good!!!!
@cactaylor4 have you ever rowed? Made it into the Semi- Final of a big event, like Henley, or Head of The Charles? Let alone a final event. Those races are always on top of the others. At the end of the race, you pull your guts out but all you needed was a few more inches to get to that final, or get that gold, thats what hurts. You take off 30 some seconds off your time, but it doesn't mater. Thats a whole new world of hope. I'm not cutting down triathlon, but just saying what rowing is...PAIN!
We have a head race in 2 days at Cities. We gotta be top 6 out of 14 to advance and I know that this video helped me to realize that we can do it. We will win on Sunday.
ya good point man. I think he knows a bit more about rowing then you do thisisinstant. And this video is dope. i only wish that the other rowing canada video was on youtube. the one with renagades of funk and the distance.. its as sweet.
This video is very true. Yesterday at the SSRA Nationals we lost placing in the finals by .004 seconds. That's about the length of a quarter centimeter. I went my hardest but if everyone on my team wasn't willing to kill themselves, then in the end it doesn't matter.
Yea Yamahonda, I was never at the level you were at, but I was on an NCAA division I team and I know of a few people that died after races at that level. And to get to the top we all have to start somewhere, I started at a high school club. Just because some of us will never make it to an national team or Olympic level doesn't mean we don't contribute to the sport. A girl I rowed with in school who's making it wouldn't have been scouted cuz she wouldn't have had anyone to row with.
@niueanskier Thats the truth I always thought it was for puffs but then I started and I realised how much it takes to be good and the best thing is knowing your working for the team and your team is working for you too!!
Sometime people ask, "Why do you row." I just say, "because I love it it." But why they ask... My reply, "I have no bloody clue, it's just nothing can top the feeling of coming across the finish line with your brothers in arms..."

This video never gets old. It's always about that inch.
Brings a tear to my eye everytime I listen to this, such a powerful message that rings so true
