G'day Mr Shoptaw, still in need of rain for the pond I see, as a member of my local historical society and into steam engines and a third gen saw Mill operator this place is my favourite Mill on you tube. Thanks again 👍🇦🇺.
Watching the guy join the took me back to my apprenticeship days, at least you didn't have to replace the whole belt like you do today. Was just a case of cutting out the damaged piece then adding in a new length, did many of repairs Thanks Charlie.
I need a 5 inch thickness quarter sawn 40 inches wide 8 feet in length for a new work bench . Could you deliver it by tomorrow. Watching this video is fun for me. I remember sitting with the sawyer of a much more modern mill when i was a very young. Watching the boards coming off the mill was exciting and mesmerizing and several of those boards were used in building corrals and barn. When my dad died all of the corrals went away and now I have a beautiful treasure of resourse material in many of those boards wonderfully weathered. I have made several peices of furniture for mom and found pleasure in those old boards. Thanks for the re-kindling of a great memory. Patrick from Idaho.
G'day. Have great memories of working in sawmills here in Australia, cutting good old Aussie hardwood, would have liked to work in a steam powered mill. Great to see this mill in full operation, and not just a historical exhibit. Not 100% sure, but I don't think we have any fully operational, commercial steam sawmills left in Australia anymore. Great video, keep coming mate. Cheers.
I like the new camera positions and external video of the handling of goods, Amazing as usual, thanks for taking the time to make the videos for us fans of Industrial Steam
@@MrShoptaw I never tire of watching the machinery worked, and the way you captured the real feel and mood of it is very pleasing, I especially liked the dog playing at the water as it has such a feel of the mood, I look forward to the next videos
What people don’t realize about using wood for energy is it would only last two days to totally run the worlds needs and all of it would be burned up. I love watching this and hope it’s around a long time. It’s better than any program. Fascinating.
I work at a mill, we grind up leftover truss parts and turn them into pellets for stoves in Utah..it’s the other direction I know, but I can appreciate this in many ways…. That forklift caught me off guard. Hang onto that thing!!
Dear Mr. Shoptaw. 👍👌👏 Simply fantastic again and as always! This time even with a nice dog and some different workers/operators. I absolutely love every video about this impressive old family business. I wish this one would have been at least a 100 percent longer (of course always too short for my kind of personal taste). ;-) 😁 As always: Thanks a lot for making recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all involved life forms (humans, dogs and trees)
Love your videos brings back some great old memories, did not have steam power but love the top saws. Was wondering what size saws you run, my dad and his brother built a top saw so they could saw 72” wide boards they logged off a cottonwood river bottoms I can hardly remember. Do remember the mill had a monster Buda Diesel engine that he put a turbo on when the top saw went on, took many a nap listening to that thing bellering away in dads car next to the mill. Also love those great logs they get to cut a few each year out of state or national forest otherwise the big ones are gone up in the Midwest here, Thanks Again.
Thanks, I'm glad it brought back those memories. In some of my other videos of the mill (I think "Best of the MIll) there is narration that tells about aspects of the mill like saw blade diameter, etc..
@@MrShoptaw I understand. Thanks. For modern equipment drive belt pulleys have micro adjustable suspensions. I would expect that older equipment would have something similar. Adjusting pulleys is critical for operating modern belt systems so they do not fall off under load.

This is a family owned and operated mill and they have chosen to keep it as original as possible. Electric power has never been brought to the property. The mill has been accepted into our National Register of Historic Places.

It’s amazing how reliable things built over 100 years ago are compared with what we have now.
I agree. They were made to last.
I agree also. Things just don’t last anymore. That is why I like to try to save the old stuff from going to the junkyard
I know this has been said but thank you very much for another video. They never get old. I watch all the old ones over and over.
Glad you like them! Thanks
I am amazed by the hugh size of the trees. The work you're family does is amazing, keep posting videos please.

I think this is going on the 4th generation.

Not sure. Next time I'm at the mill I'll ask.
Nicely Done ❤ and the clever dog still got its tail 🤔

What timber are you cutting? I am in Australia and we don’t have those sorts of timber here.
It looks like bull pine/ponderosa pine

Reminds me of my child hood in Ulong
Glad about that.
