How to Make a Rabbit Fur Hat

  • I breed rabbits for meat and fur. Their tanned furs can be warmer than wool clothing, and they require much less labor to process. This is my first attempt at making a rabbit fur hat for my baby boy. Next time I'll use a different pattern because this one had some flaws. With fur being a natural byproduct of raising meat, tanning an using the hides makes perfect sense, and it's a valuable skill that most of us have forgotten.

    10/10 can't wait to try tanning/using my own wild rabbit hides later this year once I finally get one. Love seeing content from creators out here in Idaho!

      Good luck! Be careful scraping those wild rabbit hides. They're so thin. I would recommend having the bark solution all made up after you kill a rabbit so you can scrape the hide and put it straight in without drying it. They're just so easy to rip when dry, especially the western cottontails we get around here. Freezing is fine too.

    Never thought about summer fur vs. winter fur being different, but of course it makes perfect sense. Nice project.

      Age the furs? Is there a reason for that?

    • @machinemaker2248
      @machinemaker2248 4 месяца назад

      @@FloydGreen-kt1cyI'm thinking aging is some sort of treatment to make the pelt retain the fur, which is what I'm looking for. I don't want to put all that work in just for the fur to fall out and end up with a leather skull cap, though on thinking about it that does sound kinda cool, and might be good scalp protection for a baldy like me. Lol

      @@FloydGreen-kt1cy Untreated, yes, the hair falls out. I found the info on this channel in a series of shorts. Tanning uses the tannins in tree bark as a preservative. Looks simple, but it also looks like it will color white fur. I'll keep looking.
      I'm loving the apocalyptic skull cap idea. Gonna keep that in mind.

    So nice. I always use paper cut out the individual cuts and makes it easier to figure out the actual inner dimension. And if you make them out of wool you got a hard pattern to make more of the same size.

    I am looking for rabbits that are usable for both meat and fur. You mentioned that you use silver fox for your buck, and your females are crosses. What are they crosses of? Are there any other types of crosses you recommend for both fur and meat?

    • @loreleibrewer3803
      @loreleibrewer3803 Месяц назад

      Some good meat+fur breeds:
      Silver Fox - no one knows for sure what breeds were crossed to make these (some speculate Champagne d'Argenté and Checkered Giant)
      Argenté - from France; there are 6 different coat colorings, unsure of what breeds were crossed to make it
      American Chinchilla - a larger version of the Standard Chinchilla, bred for meat and fur in America. Couldn't find info on its heritage
      Californian - crosses of New Zealand, Standard Chinchilla, and Himalayan
      Rex - from France, only info I could find on it's origin is that it was from a litter of wild gray rabbits
      Some or most of these breeds are rare due to the fur industry falling off in the 1940s, most commercial furriers only want animals with white fur (easier to dye)
