You want to use non iodized salt. Pickling salt or livestock salt work best. Fat is amino acids and will burn holes through the leather if you don't remove it all. You can use Colman camp fule to degrees after fleshing.

What if you miss some of the fat and skin before the egg process? Should you start the whole thing over again? Or just wash, remove the skin/fat that was missed, and egg again? Or is the whole thing trashed?
I don’t miss that smell. My dad used to do this at the dining table. Made a real raccoon hat, rat snake hat band, and 2 rabbit furs for our doll beds 😂
I’m trying my first rabbit, I salted and then did the yolk process but my towel dried out and my hyde is hard, I’m washing now and letting it soak but noticed there is a lot of (flesh?) left over. I wasn’t really sure how much to scrape because I didn’t want it to get too thin. Any advice? Should I cut off the rubbery parts and start completely over? Or do I just do the egg process again.
Thank you so much for this informative video!I grew up in a household without any other sportsmen, so I'm having to learn all this stuff myself. Thank goodness for RUclips and channels like yours! I ran over a smallish rabbit yesterday and want to try preserving the fur for use in tying my own fly fishing flies, and also eating the meat. The animal is currently untouched in the refrigerator - do you have any advice on washing it to make sure it is clean of disease and/or pests? Thanks again! Seán
One tip for skinning old rabbits. When the rabbit is dead and hanging on its legs before starting to skin it, make a small cut on the leg and put in the hole the hose of a bicycle pump, hold it so the hose don't come out and pump a few times. It will become like a baloon. The air will do the hard work of pulling the skin from the meat.
SO helpful, thanks! Your other videos on tanning were awesome but I've been really curious about this method too and there aren't a whole lot of thorough videos.
Awesome, glad you found it helpful! I think alum gives you a nicer tan personally, but this is perfect if you only have 1 or 2 to do, just take the time on the stretching portion using eggs.
Thank you for the video. That was new information to me, and i'm old. : ) i was not quite ten pounds, but almost. Funny, i too have felt apologetic for that.
@GoodSimpleLiving when you have time, could you make a hide- smoking video? I have looked at other videos but they're hard to understand and they don't tell you how to either keep their color or get it back
Like the video. Trying it on a goat. I use the hair for tying jigs. Don't care if the leather is soft just dont want it to rot. I fleshed it already - Do I still need to wait 48 hours after salting? Also do I need to streach it since I just use the hair?
Great thx!! I butchered my first rabbit yesterday because she was a terrible mama. So since I just have one hide I’m going to try this method. Thanks so much!! I don’t miss that smell. My dad used to do this at the dining table. Made a real raccoon hat, rat snake hat band, and 2 rabbit furs for our doll beds 😂
Haha, my barbies had a rabbit skin rug. Yeah, there is a smell lol
I subscribe because this is one of the most explanatory video Iv found
have you used strong magnets to hold down the hides to stretch them? neodymium magnets from ebay would work.
Haven't tried that
I’m trying my first rabbit, I salted and then did the yolk process but my towel dried out and my hyde is hard, I’m washing now and letting it soak but noticed there is a lot of (flesh?) left over.
Seán
I bombed the pickling method (my fault). I’m going to try this method now. Thank you.
So excited you made this video!!!!! Looking forward to attempting to tan my own rabbit hides!!!! :)
you definitely did a great job, and you helps me a lot actually! ❤️
VELLY INTERESTING THANK YOU I ALWAYS HAVE EGGS .BUT SOMETIMES I'M A LITTLE SHORT ON BRAINS.GOOOD VIDEO !
Aren't we all, lol
Amazing video. So educational. Will definitely consider egg tanning for my pelts ❤❤❤
I found pool salt is super cheap and since it has no additives it is good for many similar projects.
Very interesting!
What's all this talk about stool salt... I didn't know stools had...oh...pool... never mind... lol
Love this video, thank you so much for sharing.
I'm still waiting for that video on how to smoke tan.
Thanks for this video. You have helped me so much... in this video you mentioned about water proofing them? Has it been posted yet?
Those are some gorgeous hides
Yes the older satin rabbits really have plush thick hides!
Huh, very interesting. I want to try this!
@@GoodSimpleLiving it works, when I was a kid my father did it with every rabbit doesn't matter old or young.
@@stoyanbalev184 yup!
I have to process some older rabbits within the next couple of weeks and I'll definitely give this a try! Thanks for sharing!
Good idea..
Excellent video. Learning so much from you
Thank you for the video. That was new information to me, and i'm old. : ) i was not quite ten pounds, but almost. Funny, i too have felt apologetic for that.
Lol, my son got me back at 9'8!
@GoodSimpleLiving when you have time, could you make a hide- smoking video? I have looked at other videos but they're hard to understand and they don't tell you how to either keep their color or get it back
Awesome video. Will be saving this one for the future.
Thank you so much!!! This is perfect! Its my first time. And thanks to this video my hide came out perfect!
Yay!!
@@GoodSimpleLiving It looks amazing! Thank you so much for posting this video. I couldn't of tanned my hide without it. 🐇
I like your shirt. Props to you for the cause.
Thank you! I let my first rabbit hide dry out longer than it should have and now its pretty stiff. Can I start from the beginning again?
Like the video. Trying it on a goat. I use the hair for tying jigs. Don't care if the leather is soft just dont want it to rot. I fleshed it already - Do I still need to wait 48 hours after salting? Also do I need to streach it since I just use the hair?
Soo cool. Thanks for sharing you guys.
Of course!
Question, probably dumb. But will try is process work with wild rabbits harvested. Like jackrabbits and cottontails?
Yes it will
Great thx!! I butchered my first rabbit yesterday because she was a terrible mama. So since I just have one hide I’m going to try this method. Thanks so much!!
PS in the past I watched a bunch of butchering videos that you did but once I really needed them I could not find any. Is there a reason? Where are they hiding? 🤔
Great video. I looked to see if you had posted a video on how to waterproof the hide. You had mentioned you would post a video on how to smoke the hide. Have you posted the video by chance? Also, is there another alternative to waterproof your hide other than smoking?
