You have a beautiful family, and thanks for saving the rabbit hides. I worked for two years I guess from 1978 to 1980 maybe 80 to 82 some where there about. A company called Dakota Fur and Metal. The winter time work was all hides, Coyote, Badger, Fox, Racoon, Muskrat, Beaver and in the summer time we would take in cow hides. The cow hides would be stacked in a tin shed all hair side down layered all over the floor and I would have to cut off tails and any excess fat then salt them come fall time they would be rolled up hair side out and wait for freezing conditions and then sold (the hair side in this case was not important.). North Dakota where I live freezes almost every night starting end of Oct. But for the other hides they had a fleshing pole that and a knife that looked like a backwards draw knife. The fleshing pole was a pole about the size of a telephone pole not that long but that diameter and one end was on the floor and the other end was raised like you had it propped up on a saw horse, and the business end was shaped like and anvil round end only larger, you would slip you hides on that. They had boards actually coon brds, coyote brds etc for each animal these board kind of looked like small Ironing brds. The company also had a person to sew up the hides that had any fleshing mishaps. When done drying and I don't remember how long that took although I thing overnight, they would be turned inside out noses where the hardest and the starting point, the they had a big tumbler made out of lumber, it was about 8 feet in diameter and about 2-1/2 feet wide and had sawdust inside it and they would throw stanisole in there and the hides would come out of there looking like well........... great. really nice I always thought the Badger looked the nicest. But I being color blind I suppose its not the best.
    Take care

TANNING is the preservation method, not salting. Salting is only necessary (to help in removing moisture from the hide quickly in damp environments) if you are going to tan the hides later (when you have enough to do a large batch all at once) and you have no means of freezing the hides... even then ONLY in areas with high humidity such as the southeast USA (aka- hillbilly/swamp rat country). In the southwest/desert, it is not necessary at all. Salting is generally a waste of time/energy/money/materials...

You want to use non iodized salt. Pickling salt or livestock salt work best.
Fat is amino acids and will burn holes through the leather if you don't remove it all. You can use Colman camp fule to degrees after fleshing.

This was really interesting. I have done a few rabbit hides with egg, some deer hide and sheep hide. But I never knew if these things would rot if they got wet. I stretched mine over a 2 by 4 held in between my knees. We don't raise rabbits for meat anymore, bc kiddo kept snuggling them.and then they would snuggle into your neck when it was "time". The family didn't like to eat them anyway. Now we have pigs and I was told tanned pig skin is the most wonderful leather.

Thank you so much for this informative video!I grew up in a household without any other sportsmen, so I'm having to learn all this stuff myself. Thank goodness for RUclips and channels like yours! I ran over a smallish rabbit yesterday and want to try preserving the fur for use in tying my own fly fishing flies, and also eating the meat. The animal is currently untouched in the refrigerator - do you have any advice on washing it to make sure it is clean of disease and/or pests? Thanks again! Seán

Thank you so much for making these videos! I started raising meat rabbits because of your videos and it's going really well. I just dispatched and butchered my first rabbit last Sunday and we had rabbit stew on Tuesday! You have been an absolute and complete resource and I'm so grateful for your willingness to teach how to do all of this. With that said, I have a question. I used this method for tanning the hide and it never got dry. Even after the salt sat on it for 2 days it was still kinda moist. I put the eggs yolks on for 2 days after fleshing and used the damp towel. The hide never got dry and has stayed completely white. It's from a white rabbit. I'm afraid that it may have been wasted, or that it will just fall apart. Any advice? Should I salt and egg it again? Thanks so much for taking the time to read this!

I’m trying my first rabbit, I salted and then did the yolk process but my towel dried out and my hyde is hard, I’m washing now and letting it soak but noticed there is a lot of (flesh?) left over. I wasn’t really sure how much to scrape because I didn’t want it to get too thin. Any advice? Should I cut off the rubbery parts and start completely over? Or do I just do the egg process again.

One tip for skinning old rabbits. When the rabbit is dead and hanging on its legs before starting to skin it, make a small cut on the leg and put in the hole the hose of a bicycle pump, hold it so the hose don't come out and pump a few times. It will become like a baloon. The air will do the hard work of pulling the skin from the meat.
